So far so good...

Just bought this for our Public Access TV station. I wanted a camera that was light and easy to use on the go with High quality results. So far, have been really happy with this camera for our use. Just wish that it shot in SD not in an MPEG-2 format, as FCP does not import these files. That to me is the only downside at this point.

Nice,compact and easy to use.

The autofocus is a little strange switching from position to position,so decided to use this cam for long steady wide shots and film style shoot with my canon T1i. Works out great. Lacks a few features but overall a very nice camera.

Great General Purpose Camcorder

The auto on off with the LCD is Great. By keeping a bag of rice in my dry bag for carrying I did NOT have any fogging or electronic problems during a week in the rain and cloud forest...unlike some other equipment I use! It is VERY light and a snap to turn on and capture shots (video & stills) quickly. My only downside comments are the inability to get the GPS data from the video on my mac...the Sony PMB software is Windows only and the shotgun mic is not truly unidirectional...it is VERY sensitive and picks every distracting noise, voice, vehicle in the vicinity.

The Sony HXR-MC50U Ultra Compact Pro AVCHD Camcorder combines small form factor with professional design for a high-quality tool that can gather images practically anywhere without calling attention to itself. Much like the consumer equivalent HDR-CX550V, the HXR-MC50U captures 1920 x 1080 video at the full 24Mbps bit rate possible in the AVCHD format. That means smooth, high-resolution HD video that captures every detail recorded through the camera's 10x wide-angle zoom lens.

Further distinguishing the HXR-MC50U is the addition of an ECM shotgun microphone (with holder), a large lens hood and a high-capacity battery for extended shooting times. The changes also extend to the inside, in the form of increased image control via an assignable dial that gives you manual control over focus, exposure, white balance, iris and shutter speed.
