Light on features for a $200 adaptor

First off, I would only recommend this for a photographer... if you are a videographer, get the LA-EA2 (yes, it's worth it#. My pet peeve with this adaptor is how slow it is to adjust the aperture and how noisy it is. Every time you adjust the aperture #up or down# it opens all the way and then closes to the appropriate setting after making a click-click sound. Have to adjust it again? CLICK-CLICK. Did the sun just come out from behind a cloud and you want to close the aperture by three steps? CLICK-CLICK, CLICK-CLICK, CLICK-CLICK and it takes a second also. My next pet peeve is that AF does not work in video mode. This is simply a software issue that limits it. Sony did this so more people would buy the outrageously over-priced LA-EA2. If you don't have SAM/SSM lenses or a desire for AF, then I would recommend a $25 manual adaptor #with apeture ring) instead of this overpriced fluff. Only if you are 100% photo/0% video shooter who has SAM/SSM lenses would I recommend this adaptor.

Learned about NEX focus with this...

I wanted to work with mirrorless imaging while preserving my options to add SLT later. If I had bought E-mount lenses, I would have been 'stuck' with mirrorless focusing. I found that mirrorless is good unless it is an action video/photo OR you doing video-zooming. I did eventually get the LA-EA2, but still like the EA1 when there is very little 'action' or zooming. I did have to forsake the in-lens-stabilization in SOME of the E-mount lenses, though.

Excellent for video

I use this mount adapter quite often with my Alpha lenses for video. I really like the fact that it does not allow for autofocus while shooting video as I don't want to use autofocus while shooting video. I focus like I would do for shooting stills then start shooting video and I don't have to worry about the autofocus trying to focus on a random by-passer walking behind my subject or a pigeon walking in front. Very handy.

Worked OK

Wanted this to attach my sigma zoom lens and it worked great. Specially like the added tripod mount.

Handy Extra to Own

I found that being able to use my existing A-Mount lenses was a desireable feature when purchasing a Sony NEX-VG10. Yes, this adapter will couple any A-Mount lens to an E-Mount camera, but it doesn't provide full functionality (specifically auto focus). So if you are wanting a quick reaction on focus time, make sure you are using only E-Mount lenses on your camera.

A must for versatility.

I keep reading about people experiencing no autofocus capability. Update your NEX firmware to version 3. Update your adapter to version 2 and it will work with: SAM Lenses * DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM (SAL1855) * DT 28-75mm F2.8 SAM (SAL2875) * DT 55-200mm F4-5.6 SAM (SAL55200-2) * DT 30mm F2.8 Macro SAM (SAL30M28) * DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) * DT 50mm F1.8 SAM (SAL50F18) * 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) SSM Lenses * Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM (SAL1635Z) * Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM (SAL2470Z) * Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (SAL24F20G) * 70-200mm F2.8 G (SAL70200G) * 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G SSM (SAL70300G) * 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM (SAL70400G) * 300mm F2.8 G (SAL300F28G) Also, yes it's slow compared to the kit lens, may take up to 5 seconds, never 10 seconds, but you will be using it with lenses that do not have image stabilization nor do you have the continuous auto-focus option. So you're not probably shooting fast moving object, thus it's not exactly a major con. P.S. not sure why the IQ drops so significantly when the uploaded image gets resized by the Sony website.

AF now works!

I bought it used. Tried it on my NEX-3 and "Surprise!". AF works like a charm on my 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM Sigma wide angle zoom. Still too expensive IMHO. That is a definite bonus as I was prepared to use it for manual focus...

Autofocus works... Very slowly.

Tried this adapter with a few SAM Alpha-mount lenses. It's like they said- autofocus DOES WORK - but for some reason, beyond me, it takes something like 5-10 seconds. I don't own any Alpha lenses, so I bought a third-party adapter to use my old Minolta MD lenses. I can focus the picture myself faster than this adapter will autofocus on an Alpha lenses. If you already own hundreds of dollars worth of Sony lenses, go for it- this adapter is a no-brainer! If your eyes are bad, or if (like me) you like to take pics when you're too drunk to see straight...ahem... even painfully slow autofocus is worth it. But, if you are like me, I would wait for the NEX e-mount lenses come out in the next few years (and hope they're not crazy-expensive!), and get an adapter for some dirt cheap, good old manual focus lenses for now!

LA-EA1

This product should not be even on the market. As much sony invested into their NEX5 they should invest a little more money (for the same $200) to supply this adapter with autofocus! negligence? laziness? Ignorance?

New autofocus works well.

Both the AF and Aperture controls work well and quickly, and the A-Mount SAM lenses are cheaper (and more plentiful). However, the A-Mount SAM lenses don't feature image stabilization (since it's included inside the bodies of regular Alpha SLRs) and the are much louder (really only important if you plan on shooting movies). Will work with all A-mount lenses, even the old Minoltas, but the AF will not function. These shortcomings are NOT the fault with the adapter. Do yourself a favor and invest this adapter and start growing your SAM lens collection...

Great Product -people who rated this low READ THIS

While I was fairly disappointed in the manual focus only limitation. I was glad to finally be able to implement my sony alpha lenses for my NEX. The great news is that at the 2010 Photokina, Sony announced auto focus compatibility for alpha lenses attached to this adapter.

does not support autofocus

I just got this today and nowhere on the product website description does it make note that this will not support autofocus. Added to the outside of the box it has a sticker added that it is "For MF (Manual Focus) mode". Inside in the instructions it says AF is not available with the adapter. It also says in the instructions (for the first time - anywhere) that it does not support teleconverters. I mistakenly presumed that when coupled with one of Sony's "compatible" lenses that they would work harmoniously. Not until I recieve the product did I find these material limitations. Mechanically the adpter looks fine - but my expectations were set much higher from the product description and the word "compatible".
