Good Tamron lens for Sony Camera

Excellent lens I used for close up pictures of flowers. Lens is easy to handle. Has great depth of field. I recommend.

Great all around lens.

The 18-200 zoom range make this a great general use lens. I have used this lens for a local "First Friday" events as well as the Grand Prix of Baltimore. I have taken some great photos with this lens. My only issue with this lens is with the loose zoom mechanism. When carrying your camera face down, the lens will extend to the longest position. There is a lock to prevent this. Remember to use this if you are not using the lens for a while.

Very nice lens for the price

Looked for one lense to replace two lenses I previously used. Lense is a bit heavy but not bad. Autofocus as noted in some of the reviews is a bit slow but not objectionable.

Good Value

Bought this for the short end of the zoom, and the close focus ability across the entire range. Hunts a bit in low light, but so do my Pentax lenses. This will be the lens that spends a lot of time mounted. Sharpness is quite satisfactory for my purposes. Good value at the price paid.

Stop switching lenses

For years my favorite lens has been a Tamron 70-300 zoom because I can use it for macro shots and to pull people's faces in when they don't know it. When I needed a wide-angle lens, I'd have to change or backup way up. With the Tamron 18-200, I get the best of both worlds. It's compact and it allows greater flexibility and I don't have to worry about switching lenses and risking missing "the" shot.

Nice lens, does the job

We bought this lense to replace our Sony 18-75mm and it does the job. The downfall is that it is very noisy when focusing and it drains the camera's battery life. I would recommend taking an extra battery with you if you are planning to take lots of pictures in one day. This lense is good enough to take kids pictures (which is why I bought it). Its an amateur lense.

Autofocus does not work beyond 50mm.

Autofocus will work at low focal length but Manual focus is required for 70mm to 200mm. Very disappointed. I don't have this issue with other Tamron zoom lenses I have.

Compared to Pentax 18-55 and 50-200

I'm a retired pro and former photo lab owner who has always used Pentax and Nikon lenses on Pentax and Nikon bodies. Had doubts about an after market lens but find this to be equal to the job of replacing two Pentax lenses with no loss in quality. Maybe the focus hunts a little more than the Pentax in low light. Overall I am very happy trading this lens for the other two. Don't hesitate to buy this lens.

Zooms: almost always a compromise.

This lens is a compromise. As a compromise, it behaves well. The image quality is not to par with other offerings-nor should it be expected as such. It is well adequate, and that is precisely why I bought it. The focal range is appropriate for my general needs. It stays on my camera because I never know what or when I will take pictures on the fly. In more specific situations I will likely choose a more specialized tool. I don't want to come across as critical. In context of what it is, it is really quite good.

"Quality matches the price"

I bought this lens for my old Canon Rebel XS. My daughter will be using this camera for a future journalism class. The lens does not seem durable at fisrt inspection but has performed well so far. It does focus slower than my sigma or canon lenses. If you want an affordable lens with a wide range then this is for you. If you want a lens that is quick, I suggest you get the same brand as your camera body or a sigma lens.

Good Overall Lens

I am a very amateur photography who is learning all about lenses. I have Sony Alpha with 2 kit lenses. They were fine for someone like me. But I HATE changing out the lenses or having to carry them around just in case. So I decided to get this lens. All the previous reviews are pretty accurate. The lens is good and reliable, I am impressed with the quality that this lens generates. It is a bit loud and not the best for low lighting. But I have not really mastered photography in low light settings yet anyway, Overall I am very very pleased with this choice. I almost got the 18-270 Tamron but the cost difference is pretty big and this 18-200 is more than enough for me.

My Most Used Lens!

Needed an AF zoom to replace my all MF 35mm zoom. Read reviews on line, asked questions on photo forums and compared lenses and prices. Went with the Tamron and have enjoyed the crisp, clear images, quick AF. It is becoming my "walk around" lens. I do find the zoom barrel can creep when held angled up or down, but it has not been an issue. I do like the "lock" feature on the zoom.

Average Lens

This is a nice lens, but I would recommend spending a few extra dollars and go for the 18mm-270mm Tamron lens. You get a longer zoom range, a quieter focus motor and image stability so worth the extra dollars. Generally, this lens served me very well and is a good all purpose lense to have on your camera. There were a couple of situations when I was glad I had it attached to my camera and caught some very nice photos I might have lost with a prime or wide angle lens. Easy to pack also.

No thanks

As a pro event photographer, iStock contributor and generalist shooter with a penchant for urban/street, enviro portraiture and cycling, I'm not happy with this lens at all - nor with the previous near-version (18-250). Anyone that says this lens is sharp has not yet experienced better glass on their camera. Yes, it's a good lens for the price, but that doesn't make it a good lens. Ya get what ya pay for. Focus is slow. Hunting is bad. Creep is ridiculous. Bokeh is weak. Sharpness lacks. I learned to squeeze the best performance out if it I could (f/8, not racked out, no more than 200 ISO in good lighting with auto focus point detection when using AFC), but all those limitations came at a price. I do have a good copy and I did adjust F/B focus (a lot). I've since bought pro glass and this lens has been benched as backup for travel/walk-around photography. Too bad, too. I read good things about it (which is why I bought it in the first place). If you're anything more than a casual auto-shooter saving droves of JPEGs on your computer, invest in better glass than this - you'll be glad you did. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it would be a good starter lens for a novice.

"Great lens for traveling"

I bought this as a general purpose lens for my Pentax K-x. The focal range is exactly what I need to reduce lens changes. With the K-x and newer Pentax DSLR's, it's surprisingly good for capturing low light shots, thanks to the excellent high ISO performance and sensor stabilization. While I wouldn't use this lens for fast sports shots, it would work well out on the golf course, or for tennis perhaps. Be careful if you use this with the built-in flash. Any focal length starting at 28 or higher should do for that purpose. Just don't forget to take off the lens hood. Otherwise, get a dedicated digital flash unit (something I'm still looking for).

Very good lens, love it

Well build lens, very sharp pics, compact, a little heavy but I like a heavier lens, doesn't feel cheap or plasticly. only thing that need inprovement is the focus speed, but I don't mine that issue for the type of pictures I take.

Great thing in a little package

The great thing about this lens is, it is the only one i need to take with me when I am traveling etc. The only con when zooming is the slow focus

Great lens

When I shoot outdoor with no flash this lens is great. very convenient to go from wide angle to tlephoto. I've been changing lens for the extremes and this is so much easier. When doing flash with some depth of field this works.I don't have to shoot at Ap priority to get the depth I need..I still use my 80-200 2.8 for no flash at concerts and stage lit events. But other than that this lens has been on my camera all the time.Very happy with the quality of the images...

Great lens - travel light

Hi, I've been a film photo hobbyist for several decades just now exploring a DSLR. I enjoy traveling light and the "all-in-one" 18-200 XR DI-II fits the bill. This lens is light & small, takes great pictures and a very good values. The AF is a little noisy, but typical. I would recommend this lens to walk around a city or the country side and be able to handle many photo opportunities.

About Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR DI-II LD Aspherical (IF) AF Zoom Lens with Macro, for the Maxxum & Sony Alpha Mount.

• The AF18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO (Model A14), a new high power zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using APS-C size image sensors.
• The new AF18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO is a high power zoom lens for exclusive use with digital (APS-C size) SLR cameras that inherits the product concept of the existing AF28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR zoom lens. Even two years after its introduction, the current AF28-300mm is still a favorite and highly evaluated by photographers around the world as a representative model of high power zoom lenses.
• With the market influx of digital SLR cameras in recent years, the use of high power zoom lenses has become increasingly popular since high power zooms provide the convenience of handling many photographic scenes and the capability of shooting ultra telephoto shots without changing lenses. The popularity of this focal length led Tamron to initiate the development of new zoom lenses to further meet the needs of digital SLR photographers.
• The result is the successful development of a new zoom lens exclusively for use on digital SLR cameras. The wide to ultra tele focal range of this lens will allow digital SLR camera owners to enjoy digital photography with comfort and convenience.
• * "Di (Digitally Integrated design)-II" is the designation Tamron puts on lenses designed for exclusive use with digital (APS-C size) SLR cameras, featuring optical systems optimized to meet the performance characteristics of digital cameras. * "Di-II" lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.
• By incorporating an optical design for exclusive use with digital (APS-C) SLR cameras, this high power zoom lens provides the focal length equivalent to Tamron's 28-300mm (when converted to a 35mm format). Therefore, you can meet almost all photographic opportunities with this single zoom lens without changing lenses. When paired with the SP AF11-18mm zoom lens, simultaneously introduced by Tamron at Photokina, you can enjoy thoroughly digital SLR photography with the combined focal length coverage of 17-300mm.
• Optical System Uses Special Glass and is Optimized for Digital SLR Characteristics in order to Enhance Optical Quality in a Compact Design. The new AF18-200mm high power zoom lens from Tamron features an entirely new optical design using XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass in an innovative way in order to optimize the overall distribution of optical power throughout the entire zoom range. This design reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum and achieves remarkable downsizingat the same time. In addition, three hybrid aspherical lens elements and two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements are used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor to enhance the optical quality.
