Test it out first if you can!

I bought this lens to fill in for a Tokina 12-24 I've had for about 5 years. My 12-24 has been a real workhorse (shooting architectural jobs)and it needed to be sent in to repair a focusing problem that has suddenly popped up. The 12-28 is actually an upgrade for my old model and I was looking for at least as good an item as my old one. Well, that was not to be! This new lens has a severe softening of the image on the lower right side of anything shot wide open. I've used many Tokina lenses over a 15 year period and am very disappointed with this purchase (along with a $50 drop in price within two weeks of my buying it). It looks like I've got two lenses to send in for repair.

Nice Focal Length

I use this on a C100 which is a similar sized sensor to an APSC camera. I shoot a lot of run-and-gun corporate work and don't have time for prime lenses. I was looking at Tokina because they make high quality wide angle zooms and I didn't like Canon's offerings in both their ef-s and L series lineup in this category. I was contemplating the Tokina 11-16 which people rave about but didn't like the limited focal range and due to the c100s sensitive sensor, don't particularly need a 2.8...though I did want a constant aperture throughout. I was about to pull the trigger on the Tokina 12-24 when I read Ken Rockwell's glowing review of this lens. Though I'm not taking stills with this lens, it does the trick and works flawlessly with the C100.

About Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon EOS

The Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-x Pro APS-C Lens for Canon is a wide-angle to standard length zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/4.0. It is compatible with Canon APS-C cameras and provides a 35mm focal length equivalency of 19-45mm. This compact lens features a one-touch AF/MF clutch operation to switch back and forth between auto and manual focus, for manual focus slide the focus ring back and for autofocus allow to the ring to rest in the forward position. A newly designed GMR (magnetic precision) AF sensor is mounted close to the AF motor and provides fast, accurate AF. The lens' SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) means that autofocus responds smoothly and silently, which is ideal when shooting HD video.

The use of SD glass (ultra-low dispersion glass), which emulate fluorite glass in performance, aims to eliminate chromatic aberration and aspherical lens elements in both the front and rear lens groups correct distortion and also helps to minimize aberrations for sharp imaging throughout the zoom range.
