Flash-lit flower close-up photography can be beautiful if you have the technique; now let's look at the gear you'll need to pull this off.
The biggest challenge photographers face when shooting nature close-ups is how to get a sharp image.
Optically wonderful lens - hunts a little
By Larry
I have used this lens for the last couple of months on a D300 camera. It has become my favorite Macro and mid-distance lens. Particularly like contrast and color. 105mm on a DX camera provides a good distance for macro work and is not too long for general "walk around" photography. My only complaint is that it tends to hunt while focusing at times. The "limit" switch helps but it's still slow at times. Not a huge negative for me.
A must-have lens for your camera bag
By WinePro
In the short time I have had this lens, it's hardly ever detached from my D90 camera. I soon discovered that being mounted on a tripod is vital to avoid camera shake. With such a shallow depth of field at low apertures, it takes practise to get focusing right. I now use a remote and what a difference it has made. This is one of the best lenses I have ever used, and it's so well built, can't fault it at all, just wish the insects would remain still for longer and the wind wouldn't blow so much!
105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor. Engineered for use with either Nikon DX format digital or 35mm SLR cameras, this superbly crafted lens is ideal for outstanding close-up and general photography.
Vibration Reduction
Nikon's enhanced VR (VRII) technology is built into the 105mm VR Micro-Nikkor, which enables photographers to capture sharp images at shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible (at near infinity to 1/3x shooting). This is especially powerful for handheld close-up photography, where even the smallest camera movement can result in blur. In addition, VRII technology provides a stable viewfinder image, making it easier for your customers to frame their compositions, even at high magnification shooting.
Silent Wave Motor and Internal Focusing
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast and quiet autofocusing. This is a must for close-up nature photographers, as extraneous noise could disturb the subject. SWM technology also enables quick switching between auto and manual focus operation. The Internal Focusing system offers a non-rotating front lens element, making it an excellent match with circular polarizing filters and Nikon's R1 and R1C1 Wireless Speedlight Systems
Nano Crystal Coat and ED Glass
The new 105mm VR Micro-Nikkor lens features proven Nikon technologies such as Nano Crystal Coat and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass. Nano Crystal Coat further reduces flare and ED glass element minimizes chromatic aberration. These work together to provide stunning image quality.
