Adorama Photo Enlarging Paper goes to Australia.

Recently I had some spare time to scour the world for a bargain and I thought I found it in Adorama's New York store. Their house brand "Adorama Variable Grade Glossy Fibre-based Photo Paper" in the 8"x10" size was listed at US$149.95 for a box of 250 sheets. That looks inexpensive! So I ordered three boxes. To avoid high international shipping charges I took advantage of Adorama's free delivery offer for US addresses by using Australia Post's ShopMate service (based in Portland, Oregon) as a freight forwarder. After all the fees, charges, and currency exchange gymnastics the paper arrived 13 days after ordering. Final cost was A$1.09 per sheet; not bad with the Australian dollar so low. How's the paper to work with? It's a neutral emulsion on a double weight white base. The paper is fast exposure-wise and develops quickly. Under my enlarger the contrast grades showed slightly mis-matched speeds but a couple of hours of testing and calibration eliminated that problem. Aesthetically the paper is "characterless" and predictable. It's an ideal fibre-base paper for routine use because it does not impose its signature on whatever negative you care to shine on it.

Wonderful tones

I simply loved the tones. I chose this for my final project and was able to maintain same tones in each print with out murkiness in the grey resonated good depths in tonal value.

You can't beat the price

You don't need the traditional name brand products to get a high quality paper. You can save money and still have high quality paper if you buy the Adorama brand paper. I have used both RC and FB multigrade. Both are great, give consistent results. An especially good bargain when you buy a box of 250 sheets.

About Adorama Variable Grade, B/W Paper, 8x10in - 250, Glossy

• Adorama VGFB Gloss is a high speed variable contrast black and white enlarging paper with a double weight fiber base. The use of color filters permits selection of required contrast from a range of grades similar to that of graded papers, with the advantage to the user of reduced paper stock. A neutral image tone and a clean white base combine to give a high quality paper equally suitable for dish processing. The paper gives a consistent image tone across the grades and exhibits good sharpness.
• This paper is designed for use with tungsten or tungsten halogen light sources. Other light sources may give different contrast values. Exposure of the paper is straight forward, depending on which filter system is in use. For Ilford Multigrade filters, grades 00 to 3 have the same speed (ISO P 250) and grades 4 and 5 require approximately twice the exposure. For the filter settings, grades 0 to 4 have the same speed (ISO P 320). Grades 00 and 5 require more exposure (ISO P 250). When no filter is used, the paper has a contrast of approximately grade 2 and a speed of ISO P 640.
• Open only in a darkroom illuminated by safelights Ilford 904 or Kodak OC containing 15W bulbs or equivalent; red safelights may also be used. The safelights should be at least one metre from the paper at all times and good working practice of keeping exposure to safelight at a minimum should be adopted. Unused paper should be returned to its original packaging for storage.
