Almost Great

In concept, an exquisitely designed cage for the Canon C100. I was drawn to the form-fitting design to the camera body and access to all controls and cable ports. In practice it has left a bit to be desired. The cage fits so close to the body that in some instances there's not enough room to fit short 1/4-20 screws from the inside of the cage. The notch to access the camera's two audio inputs from that abomination of an audio/handle on the C100 is not aligned well. It's difficult to unplug the large audio connector and there's not even enough room to plug in the mini stereo connector. I'll have to remove the camera from the cage to plug it in. The biggest disappointment was the cold-shoe adapter that Redrock sells separately to fit the top of the cage. When I attached the C100's audio/handle to the adapter there was a HUGE amount of wiggle horizontally and vertically. It just wouldn't tighten down properly. Redrock's customer support said they were aware of the problem and would send me another when they had it corrected. Nice effort but not exactly the quality I expected. Another disappointment was their padded shoulder mount and carbon fiber rods. Again, a nice looking piece that lacked execution. One side of the shoulder mount was too tight to insert the CF rod without a lot of twisting and pushing. I just sent that combo back for a refund. I did decide to keep the ultraCage. I still think it's a nice solution but lacks in execution which I'll work around. After the experience, however, I did decide to go with Zacuto for the rest of my rig.
