decent scope.

decent enough scope, biggest complaint is the tiny little bitty fov you get at more than 10 power. this is basically a 4-10 scope for me because seeing anything at more than 10 is nearly impossible. other than that its a quality scope

Set your expectations

Scope is appropriate for a first time big game hunter. I put this on a mid priced Savage rifle (. 308). If you're looking to shoot beyond 400 yards this scope is not for you. If your hunting distances include 400 and in, t) 12x will have no issues. My wife shot her first bull elk at 280 yards with one shot. She used the BDC to hold over. Elevation was pretty close to running out when zeroing. Would recommend a 20 MOA rail if you prefer to dial and to avoid running out of elevation .

Great scope for the price

Great scope for the price point! My rifle came with a fairly decent scope, but after a few seasons I wanted to upgrade to better glass, slightly higher magnification, and a good BDR. As someone who is going through "adult onset outdoorsmanship", The Vortex Diamondback line is at exactly the right level so that I know it's going to do what I need it to do, and be 100% reliable, without spending $5,000 on all the bells and whistles that I don't know if I'll ever need.

Great for the $

I replaced an old Weaver with this glass a few years ago. This isn't my typical go-to price range as I usually purchase a much higher priced optic. However, I didn't want to shell out that extra money for something I only use occasionally. This gets the job done well. Holds zero. Bright and clear. Tracks well. Impressive for the price. The Diamondback line packs a lot of value.

Used this to shoot my first deer

I went hunting with this scope. I put it on a mossberg 500. I was using Winchester Sabot Slugs with the expanding tip. Scope was sighted in at 100 yds. I called vortex, and they were able to calculate the trajectory of the slug at distances beyond 100 yds. Each notch below center was about 25 yds. I used the 2nd notch to shoot a deer at approximately 165yds ( i used a range finder). The second notch gave me a perfect broadside shot and got me my first deer. I did this from a tree stand. Absolutely superb scope, high quality coated lenses and I had no problems with fog on the lenses as they are nitrogen purged!

Quality entry level scope

Great field of view and easy to use reticle. For the price, there isn't a better rifle scope on the market. Great for a mid-range rifle need for sportsman.

Does what you need it to

Purchased this for a Ruger M77 in . 270 several years ago. Glass is great quality for the price, and it has held up well over the years. If you're willing to do the math, the reticle can and will take you past 500 yards. I enjoy how well the hashes work with the trajectory of . 270. Only real complaint is that the turrets are mushy on adjustment, but I'm not moving them frequently so I can put up with it.

Eye relief is very bad

Eye relief is terrible. I wish I could return this. It's my first Vortex rifle. Very hard to get off a quick shot while hunting as you're trying to find the perfect spot for eye relief, very frustrating. Would not recommend.

About as nice as it's not.

So if you want this specifically for hunting, it will most likely serve you well. The clarity and reticle is good and I have no doubt the scope is durable. Where I have issues with it is the elevation and windage adjustments are straight mush. If you wanna dial up or down you may as well forget about it, they have numbers to indicate how many MOA you've adjusted but I can't feel or hear the actual clicks so it's almost impossible to tell. Also I've noticed on a couple different guns I've had this on or tried mounting it to, I cannot get the eye relief right. The eye relief itself is good, however the dimensions of the scope make it hard to adjust it correctly on the rifle. This scope is about an inch shorter in length than my leupold VX freedom, so to get the same eye relief I have to scoot it further rearward on the gun and then that causes the objective to hit something and now I need taller rings and so on. Overall the scope itself is fine and will do great for a dedicated deer gun which is what I'm using this for now. I do think there's better options for this price range though.

Bison down

Originally purchased for an 18" .223 wylde my son built. Ended up mounting on a .308 because my son drew a bison tag and that was the biggest round he could shoot comfortably with precision. Worked great on both the .223 wyled and .308 but will stay on the .308 now because it's a proven killer. Works great in interior Alaska in all seasons. We were in and out of cabins, tents, and the truck multiple times from hot to -20F and everything inbetween and had no issues whatsoever. Great Quality.

About Vortex Optics 4-12x40 Rifle Scope

The Vortex Crossfire 4 - 12 x 40 AO Riflescope, V-Plex Reticle, MOA (CF231017) is ideal for rim-fire, long range, predator/varmint and target applications. Built to exceed the performance standards of similarly priced riflescopes, the Crossfire is standing by, ready and more than willing to assist you with filling that tag.

With its fully multi-coated optics for optimum light transmission and a fast-focus eyepiece for quick target acquisition, the Crossfire makes quick work of dialing in for the shot that counts. The Crossfire 4 - 12 x 40 AO Riflescope has tall capped turrets, which maximize ease of windage and elevation adjustments in the field. Adjustable Objective (AO) uses an adjustment mechanism on the objective lens to fine-tune focus for the purpose of reducing parallax shooting error.

The V-Plex reticle is a single best and most popular all-purpose hunting reticle intended for a wide variety of hunting applications. The solid one-piece aircraft-grade aluminum alloy construction of the Crossfire riflescope is outstanding in strength, rugged and shockproof. Neutral pressure nitrogen purging guarantees waterproofing and fog-proofing that withstands the elements at any elevation.
