Just buy one. Add any manual focus Nikon body. Mechanically perfect. Optically awesome. Touch and feel superb. With a manual focus 20 or 24 w/ 52 mm filters and the 85 2.0 you are ready to rock indeed. Rock right back to ?1978?. Replaces both 35 and 50. Or: Put on a body and take with on the world tour with a yellow filter and an 82 if you are shooting Velvia. My go to lens for TriX and just living life. A wonderful companion.

This lens is a classic gem. None of Nikon lenses were ever built to such a top nocth quality at all parameters of quality, optics, finish and handling. Ever! Its performance is stellar even wide open. 40 mm is closer to the human eye real life perspective than the 50mm. Butterly smooth focus ring throw. More magestic finish than leicas. The bokeh is pure magic for portraits as it melts away fore and backgroungs from the subject creating a supernatural tridimensional perception; Its simple combination of optical elements, following the optical dimensional excellence of the 1930's Cooke and Zeiss Biotar projects, this little giant creates the true parameter of micro-contrast concept over which admirers of this immersinon-in-life like perception feel so proud of. I've noticed that some of my pair reviewers mention the Zeiss lenses as a parameter in their considerations; Well, I'm sorry pals. you are being mislead by the Zeiss not unfrequently exagerated spotlights; This particular Voigtlander 40mm 2.0 is far beyond any of those Zeiss, believe me. I can't rate this lens 1 to 10 'cause it can't be rated by human beings. Only the Gods of the Olympo can. t works great on just about any camera, especially on Nikon FX and Canon full-frame cameras. It's a joy to use: its focus feels better than any of my Nikon lenses! I never thought it would come to this, but this Voigtländer lens is better than Nikon's own lenses: it has better optics, better mechanics, and better ergonomics. How about that! 40mm is the ideal normal lens. It's never too long like a 50mm, and never too short like a 35mm. This lens comes with a dedicated close-up lens and 52mm -> 39mm filter adapter. The filter adapter doubles as an impromptu hood. Buy it and be a rare member of the club of photographers so lucky to create images, at a click, beyond theirr imagination utmost expected results. 400 bucks for a golden rabbit out of an outer dimension hat? You must be kidding me!

It’s not a lens for everyone but if you learned photography with an all mechanical film camera I would bet you’ll like this lens. The bad: vignetting is quite pronounced and some would see this ad bad which is ok. I on the other hand see the potential of using that characteristic. The focusing is amazing; long throw but not ridiculously long, The bokeh and general softness of the out of focus areas are my favorite traits of this lens. At f2.8 you can get truly dreamy looking portraits and stills utilizing this trait to its fullest. If you like making photographs instead or taking pictures check out this lens because at $419 it’s a steal. Also a super bonus it’s ALL metal, hood too. That’s my one beef the lens hood is another $25. I don’t mind paying just charge more for the lens and include it please!

What the three posters posted before me said, I totally agree. I have the SL IIN version and the SL IIS version. I much prefer the S version. Magnificent aspherical lens producing pics that my magazine publisher likes. The 40mm field of view is perfect!!!

The Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 SLII is as good as the critiques that I read prior to purchase….Very sharp and an interesting focal length…If one can get past the fact that it’s a manual focus lens in the day of auto focus lenses then I do not see any drawbacks with this lens

While I was looking to replace my Nikon f/1.4 Ai-S 35mm (manual) lens for being so "just okay" in it's performance (only 8 months old), I ran across the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Ultron SL-II S lens. The fact that it is a "made in Japan" lens from the Cosina factory (think Zeiss quality), caught my interest. The fact that it promised a "Zeiss-like" level of quality at about 40% of what the Nikon 35mm lens had cost was hard to believe. I had to try it! From the moment I opened the box, I had the feeling that "this is THE lens". The build is very solid, best materials, very smooth operation. After about my first 6 shots I knew I would keep this lens. The Ultron rewards you with great color & brightness-and the sharpness is what all photographers search for. The 40mm f/2 Ultron (for Nikon) beats the 35mm Nikon in every catagory!!! I will not be getting rid of this lens for a very long time.
