Questions & Answers

MICHAEL M : I love this lens, but now I'm focusing my Fuji. Does anyone have experience with this lens and the metabones adapter? I'm new to using adapters so any advice would help or even suggestions for a similar lens that has a Fuji mounts.Michael C : I just got this same combo: the Voigtlander and a Metabones adapter. With the camera you want to go into the settings to allow "no lens" which really means "not a Fujinon lens". And then find the setting for focal lengths of non-fuji lenses, and add in 58mm. Now with the adapter, I found at first that the lens was a bit loose on the adapter. This is remedied with a tiny Allen key: you loosen or tighten in this case the screws that hold in the Fuji lens side of the adapter by a very small amount, like ⅛ of a turn. Do each the same. Try. You have to experiment a bit. The other thing I did was remove the T foot on the adapter, be careful here because there are two tiny positioning pins in addition to the two screws and it would be easy to lose the pins or the screws. Put them in the box the Metabones came in.
George M : will this lens work on a nikon ftn film camera?Michael C : Of course it will; all Nikon F mount lenses, whether made by Nikon, or Sigma, Voigtlander, whatever, will work just fine. I'm using this lens on my Nikon F.OSCAR C : I don't have an FTn but based on the lens and the camera combo, I say that it should work. The FTn is an F-mount camera and this is an F-mount lens, this lens also has the aperture coupling needed by the FTn. I personally use this lens with my N80, F100, F6 and D610ANDREW R : Yes, I believe so.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JESSICA H : Excellent glass, sharp pictures.PATRICK A : I bought this to use with my Nikon F3HP, I am staying with film for as long as possible, I have heard great things about this item and it helped me decide to make the purchase.MARSHALL W : This lens will be good for unique, sharp portraits and interesting bokeh.MICHAEL D : Great reviews as an adapted full-body portrait lens for Fuji GFX.

One of the best!

Super sharp, outstanding craftsmanship, extremely well made compared to any Chinese made lens. All glass and metal, Controls are very smooth and accurate. Very easy to focus on a D5, D810, D700, Df, D300s, D90,D80, D70(s), F through F5, F100, FA, FM through FM2n, FE-FE2, and FG.

beautiful on an APS-C

I've used my Voigtlander 58mm SL-II S on both my Nikon F6 and on my Fujifilm X-T3, with a Metabones F to X adapter, where its equivalent field of view is of an 87mm lens on a full-frame camera. So it's an ideal portrait lens. The bokeh is pleasant, but I'm not a bokeh-fanatic. In fact I'm not even a corner-to-corner sharpness-fanatic either, since I use this to photograph people and real life three-dimensional things, not charts. I love it. I have the slightly older version that has a rubber rather than metal ring for the focus. But otherwise optically identical.

Best Lense - Nikon

This is pure silk to focus. Rendition, saturation, sharpness, and resolution are I believe, the best I have seen unless you are paying way too much more$$$. A must have lens, I am having difficulty putting this down.

Stellar Lens

So I went out on a limb to buy this lens after reading reviews on the previous versions. I have been lusting for this lens for a very long time but was afraid to move to a manual focus lens. The focus ring on this lens is outstanding. I highly recommend!!

It is minimalist, beautifully made, optically fantastic, looks nice, and is a relative rarity, as most Voigtländer lenses are

This review is for the 2016 model SL-II S version of the lens. Optically, this lens is superb. It is sharp and contrasty, and has very pleasing color rendering. Its bokeh is less creamy than better Zeiss lenses, but looks more attractive, in my opinion, than any Sigma or Nikon lenses around the same focal length. I use it mostly on a Nikon Df, but have also used it on a D810 and D750. Vignetting can be rather heavy at f1.4, but no more than any Nikkor 50 or 58 and is easily fixed by software profile correction. If a manual focus-only lens is acceptable for your work, this lens makes a very solid case against the ($) Nikon AF-S 58 1.4G at just about 1/3 the price. Its precision metal body feels like it would last a lot longer, and it is more compact, to boot. The issues of build quality mentioned by another reviewer seem to have been resolved entirely with this model, as this "SL-II S" feels far better built than classic Nikkors and more or less the equal of the pre-Milvus "classic" Zeiss lenses for F mount. The long focus ring is heavily damped and makes precise focusing easy, except in very low-light where DLSR viewfinders are not nearly as bright as most old film bodies. Overall, it seems like a minimalist equal of more expensive autofocus lenses around the same focal length at a much lower price. It's the small Porsche without power anything or a fancy sound system: just a manual transmission, good engine, and great bones. It is minimalist, beautifully made, optically fantastic, looks nice, and is a relative rarity, as most Voigtländer lenses are.

Impressive build, 1st class images.

Solidly built with buttery smooth focusing, the Voigtlander Nocton serves as a standard lens on my Nikon D700 and a great short portrait tele on my D300S. Bokeh is generally very smooth and while the Nocton vignettes noticeably at f/1.4, larger apertures are fully useable and the lens becomes critically sharp by f/4-5.6. I tend to shoot this lens with .7 stop under exposure for richer colors. I've read that a couple of respected reviewers consider the Nocton to be at least equal to it's Zeiss counterpart.

Outstanding lens

It's a pleasure to handle. Close focusing in low light is a challenge, but I expect that's true of all f1.4 manual focus lenses. Especially true on my D80 which has a mediocre viewfinder although it does meter just fine. Much better focusing experience on my F4. Also, terrific bargain.

Interesting colour, iffy build

Firstly, although I love the colour of this lens and its sharpness, and use it more than any other lens in my catalogue, I find it underwhelming in its price range because of build issues.Firstly, the good stuff. This lens is sharp in the centre, and stopped down to 2,8 is quite good all over. By 5,6-8, it is impeccable. Lovely. Better yet, however, is its colour rendition. Notice how I didn't say reproduction. Colour is warmer than real life, redder, and in some cases, purpler than real life. It looks GREAT in street photography, and quite good in landscapes. colours pop, and there is a great deal more contrast in the colours than my Nikon 50 1,2 and my old 50 1,4G. It is a bit red, maybe, for portrait photography, but if you've a good hand at PP in digital photography, it is fixable. For film, I find the colours are very nice with low contrast films and exciting on high contrast films. Black and white CAN look good, but it favours certain colours too much sometimes.Overall, I much much prefer it to the Nikon 50 1,2 Ai (7-blade), except for one area: bokeh.Bokeh problems with the 58 1,4 are corollary to build quality issues. The issues are most evident in the aperture blades, which don't create symmetrical circles. The aperture shape goes lopsidedly polygonal. I've seen this in several copies. It is a shock after using Nikon lenses that keep their shape 95% of the time, losing shape at only very small apertures. The aperture ring, is another other issue. It clicks into place as cheaply as my budget Sun Optical 28 2,5 wide angle lens. Its asking price completely belies its aperture shape and its aperture ring. Horrible at any price above 100$.Finally, the lens has NO good place to hold when attaching it to the camera. In comparison to anything Nikon, it feels like Fisher Price. As many detractors as I've mentioned, I love this lens, I just think it is not at all worth the price. Price is one thing, but hardly bespoke price and overall quality. At its price, the [$]

Sharp lens with smooth Bokeh

This lens is sharp and has nice bokeh, but contrast is little bit low at wide open aperture. Bokeh is more creamier than my Nikon 50mm f1.8D. One thing that really bugs me is distance/aperture index ring is too small. It is too hard to grip that small ring to attach and remove lens from camera body. But overall I love this lens.

Wonderful little lens

I wanted a fast portrait lens for my Nikon D300, and went back and forth on the Nokton and the Sigma 50 f/1.4. I ultimately chose the Nokton, and have been really happy with it. Nailing focus wide-open takes some practice, but stopped down to f/2, this lens produces wonderful results - sharp & contrasty with wonderful blurry backgrounds. The fact that this lens is nice and compact and sells for under $400 makes it an even better deal. My 4 (instead of 5) star rating only reflects the fact that shot wide-open, the lens does lose some acuity and contrast. That being said, images captured wide open are perfectly usable providing you nail the focus.
