I have been doing serious photography for 50 years. I have never owned a zoom lens and have only used top shelf primes for my cameras. I have had some excellent Zeiss, Leitz and Voigtlander lenses. I purchased the Voigtlander 50:2.0 APO for my Sony A7R3 recently and I have to say that this is the sweetest lens I have ever used. The performance is very similar to my Voigtlander 65 APO but in a more useful focal length (for me). The resolution and image rendering is simply outstanding. I normally work with 3 primes when I?m out and about but since I got this lens it has not been of my camera. I have to add that manual focus is fun and easy on the Sony A series cameras. If you favor the 50mm focal length and are comfortable with manual focus you should seriously consider this lens as your no compromise choice . I can?t imagine any 50mm lens for the Sony that performs better.

This has got to be one of the sharpest 50mm lenses that I have ever used. Even wide open the image quality is just stunning. It is a favorite walk around lens. The only possible complaint would be, as others have mentioned in reviews, is that there is not any weather sealing.

Sharpest lens I have ever used. Definitely worth the price tag. I really like how compact it is as well. I thought the lack of autofocus would be an issue, but Sony’s focus assist is flawless and it makes me slow down my shoots and focus more on framing- a bonus benefit. I am never not excited to use this lens. The lens itself is so solidly made, and feels so nice and smooth focusing or changing aperture. This is my first Voigtländer lens, and I became comfortable with using it within hours.

Recently purchased mine from the used department at Adorama. Chose to add this to my kit based on published reviews (Philip Reeve, Fred Miranda). Knew optics and handling would be superb. It was a want, not a need. Was particularly interested in how it can perform as a wildflower macro by adding a Marumi Achromat +5 magnifier. My benchmarks are the Voigtlander 65mm Apo-Lanthar and the vintage Minolta Maxxum 100mm macro, Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5. The two photos attached are of flowers about 30mm diameter. They were taken hand held in available light @ f/16 with a Murami Apo Chromat +5 filter, a7R3. I'm satisfied! By adding the Murami Achromat +5 it can serve my needs at half the weight of it's big brother 65mm Apo-Lanthar. Remember it's not weather sealed. If it may rain, at minimum wrap a ¼" strip of gaffer tape around lens mount before venturing out. Most of my life I've shot with lenses which were not weather sealed, did not have AF. To me the precision of the manual focus on primes of this quality is a feature, not a handicap.

Announcement Voigtlander 50 mm / 1: 2.0 APO-LANTHAR E
The most powerful standard lens of all time in the history of Voigtlander
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Voigtland Classic Line, we are today presenting the Voigtland APO-LANTHAR 50 mm F2.0, which was developed exclusively for Sony E-Mount full-frame cameras! The name APO-LANTHAR is only awarded for particularly powerful lenses in the Voigtlander range. And with the new APO-LANTHAR 50 mm F2.0 we are talking about a real masterpiece! The development goal was to provide the highest level of imaging performance without compromising on design. For this purpose almost all technically possible registers were drawn to ensure this top performance.
Two aspheric lens elements, five with anomalous partial dispersion, an integrated floating-focus system and an optical calculation that reduces chromatic aberrations to near zero ensure outstanding performance. The total of 12 diaphragm blades have a special shape, so that not only at aperture F2.0 but also at aperture F2.8 creates a circular opening. This allows for circular bokeh from a point light source. As usual from Voigtlander, the aperture selection and the focusing are done manually, with the focus peaking function, this can be done very precisely. The shutter snaps in 1/3 steps and can also be completely switched to stepless (and therefore silent).
The Voigtland APO-LANTHAR 50 mm F2.0 has electrical contacts that integrate the lens settings in the image acquisition with the Exif information. In addition, the lens is equipped with a distance encoder, which enables the support of 5-axis image stabilization on Sony cameras by providing the distance to the subject to compensate for camera shake.
Our new APO-LANTHAR 50mm F2.0 is a true high-performer and sets the tone in the top class. Especially in conjunction with the new high-performance sensors from Sony, one can expect outstanding results!
