The VZ-Rock: The unique variable speed Rocker Zoom thumb control allows user to maintain the slowest crawl or gradually ramp up speed and then decrease speed gradually all in one smooth motion! Because your thumb never leaves the speed control you have quick response time and smooth actions to zoom in, zoom out, zoom faster or zoom slower. Simply push to the left of rocker to zoom out(wide) or to the right to zoom in (telephoto). No shaking the camera or time lost fumbling to find the right button to zoom in or zoom out.  A low profile record button ("R") avoids accidental activation  The intuitive rocker focus control provides you with smooth ergonomic control. Place your thumb in center of the rocker and move thumb forward to focus near or shift your thumb back to focus far. This is the only rocker control of it's kind that DOES NOT! share the rocker for both zoom and focus. Seperate controls for zoom and focus is essential for quick active response times. No time will be lost switching back and forth with a shared control. And finally, the Wake up from standby button ("ON") Your camera manufacturer wisely created this safety feature to pro tect your camera. VariZoom controls respects this feature and utilizes it to the videographers greatest advantage. The purpose of this critical safety feature is to prevent damage to your cameras tape heads and the tape itself. When a camera is in pause mode the tape is still engaged with the spinning recording h eads of the camera. Because the tape is not moving when in pause mode the heads will be spinning in place on the tape. The standby safety mode activates the tape transport to disengage the tape from the recording heads. This of course eliminates wear and tear on your camera a nd your tape. When National Geographic uses our VariZoom's on their wildlife shoots, they sometimes wait for hours wit h the camera in standby mode. When they get ready to shoot again they press our "wake up from stand-by button" and the n the tape re-engages the recording heads and remains in pause until the record button is pushed. NEW EXTRA FEATURES WITH VZ-Rock!.. Shuttle Search Control! Surf through your tape with the new Frame Forward (F+) and Frame Reverse (F-) shuttle buttons. Press this b utton once and it surfs through your tape one frame at a time. Or, jog through your tape by pressing and holding the button down.  On-Screen Data Control! Turn your on-screen data in your view finder on and off (DATA)! Works much like your "display" button on your camcorder. We set things up for our church to have services via the internet while in quarantine and needed something better than using the onboard camera zoom as it was a bit jerky and difficult to control. This was recommended by a friend and it works fantastic. Will definitely buy again if we need another control.

The VariZoom VZ Rock is perhaps the best LANC controller on the market for the price.  Yes, it may seem a little expensive at first in comparison to other companies/models, but this is one of the few in this price range with a true variable speed zoom control.  If you are already used to using the variable control on your camera, the VZ Rock will feel right at home to you.  There is virtually no difference between this control and the one on your camera.  Also, this would be a great addition for cameras like the Canon GL1 or other prosumer cameras that have small rocker switches that don't allow for much variable control.

In my particular case, I use the VZ Rock on a camera crane - primarily for live production.  The two things I love about having the VZ Rock is it gives me the ability to vary the speed of the zoom even during a shot.  Also, it makes it much easier to quickly zoom in or zoom out to set your next shot.  With many LANC controllers, you have a set speed, and it can be really difficult to reset shots and then get your speed reset - especially in live production.  With the VZ Rock, you can change shot composition in literally seconds.

Also, the VZ Rock fits nicely on a tripod handle, and it would work great if used for a studio zoom controller, or any other situation where the camera person cannot comfortably access the on-camera controls.  

Finally, the biggest bonus on the VZ Rock is the additional controls beyond the zoom.  The auto focus toggle is one of the best features I have seen on a LANC controller allowing you to quickly and easily change your camera from auto to manual focus.  The focus rocker switch allows for mid-range rack focuses, and the addition of the record button and tape search buttons are just extras that make the VZ Rock a bargain.

Great Product for the Price

This is a great product.  I use it for my Sony A1u and Sony PD150/170s.  I also own a sony version with a built in handle.
This product is very usable and can attach to just about anything...ie tripod handle or shoulder mounted unit.
