FAQ

What is NASware technology and how does it benefit the Red Pro hard drive?

NASware technology is Western Digital's exclusive firmware that optimizes drive parameters specifically for NAS systems. It enhances performance and reliability by improving error recovery controls, power management, and vibration tolerance, ensuring seamless integration and robust data protection in multi-drive environments.

Can the Red Pro hard drives operate in any NAS system?

The Red Pro hard drives are extensively tested for compatibility with a wide range of NAS systems. However, it's always recommended to check with your NAS system manufacturer or Western Digital's compatibility list to ensure seamless integration with your specific NAS model.

How do the RV sensors in Red Pro hard drives protect against vibration?

The RV (Rotation Vibration) sensors in Red Pro hard drives detect increased vibrations and proactively counteract them by dispersing the excess vibration across the drive chassis. This minimizes turbulence and maintains performance, protecting the drive in multi-bay NAS environments.

What is the purpose of the multi-axis shock sensor in these hard drives?

The multi-axis shock sensor in Red Pro hard drives detects subtle shock events that can occur in NAS enclosures. It automatically compensates for these shocks using dynamic fly height technology, which helps to protect the drive and maintain data integrity.

What is OptiNAND technology and how does it improve the hard drive's performance?

OptiNAND technology is a proprietary feature of Western Digital that integrates iNAND embedded flash into the hard drive. This technology performs essential housekeeping functions, which frees up more capacity on the disk and enhances the overall performance of the drive.

Installed in UGreen NAS and working great.

So far so good. A little noisy but if that's what concerns you about a hard drive, I suggest a priority shift.

DOA

Drive was DOA - had to return for a replacement, and had to pay shipping for the return. Has been two weeks since drive was sent back and no replacement yet. Not impressive.

Very bad experience!!!

I used to trust WD very much for the quality. Now I've changed my mind based on 2 NAS HDD ordered. THEY ALL CAME DEAD ON ARRIVAL. I cannot believe it! I will certainly move to seagate or other brand instead. I connected them to my computer either by USE or on motherboard, the 12T plus model never even started, the 18T model makes weird noise first and both my mac and PC could not even recognized it. My synology NAS cannot find 12T plus model. Although it can recognize 18T pro model, it cannot even initiate it. They are just trash. Now I know why WD cut down the price!!! I believe they are all used!!! These NAS HDDs are trash!!!!! SHAM ON YOU!!!

Excellent Service!

Original drive was sent DOA, but customer service assisted and sent out new drive even before the old one was sent back. The new drive is in excellent condition and functioning properly.

WD Hard drive? Fragile?

I would rather this have shipped in a box vice a mailer envelope. The box was pretty rounded off at the corners. Wholly relying on MFGR packaging doesn't always work well. It's three days in service so I suspect it's going to last.

Excellent for NAS

Tried a Seagate one first, and it failed immediately. Have had good success with WD Red in the past, although sticking to Pro version only because of downgrades on regular Red version

Works like a hard drive should - time will tell how it lasts but WD is good usually

Hard to give a good review after only having it for a week. It's a little noisier than I would prefer, but it seems fast for a standard mechanical hard drive.

Great and super reliable HD for NAS

Bought this Red Pro to replace a faulty drive on my NAS. Went with Pro (instead of regular Red) for the added shock protection and longer (almost twice) rated workload rate (300 vs 180 TB/year). My specific application of NAS will likely not hit that high of workload but the higher rating gives me peace in mind (placebo effect or not, it is my preference to have the highest expected performance for what I am willing to pay, especially if on sale ;-) ).

RELIABLE

Yet to have a WD Red PRO or RED HD fail. Reason for this purchase was upgrading a 3T mirror to 6T mirror. Setting at my desk I can see 24 WD REDs at work. With no HD failures since I switch to WD RED I question my installing raid 6 controller.

Top of the Line but Pricey

These are excellent drives with the durability of NAS and near performance of the Black drives. Fast and quiet. Use the 8TB mainly for backup and the 4TB for RAID. So far no failures going back about 2 years. 5 year warranty. They do run a bit warm but not excessive. The main downside is they are a little pricey.

WD RED PRO

I am using them in (3) RAID 6 arrays and (8) mirror arrays and beginning to wonder why I am wasting drive space on the RAID 6 arrays when I have yet to have a drive failure after almost 3 years. I have upgraded from RED PRO 3tb to 6tb and the 3tb are still good just need more space. You may ask why RAID 6 and the answer is I used another brand and had problems with HD failures.

About WD Red Pro NAS HDD

Because enterprise environments demand robust and reliable storage solutions, the WD Red Pro 3.5" SATA III Internal NAS Hard Drive is engineered to meet these high standards. Specifically designed for commercial and enterprise NAS systems, this hard drive excels in handling high-intensity workloads in 24x7 multi-user settings. The WD Red Pro series is synonymous with performance, scalability, and dependability, making it an ideal choice for businesses that need to store, share, and collaborate on large volumes of data within multi-bay RAID-optimized NAS systems.

Optimized for NAS environments, the WD Red Pro features Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology. This innovation fine-tunes drive parameters to align with NAS system workloads, enhancing both performance and reliability. The inclusion of Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors is a testament to its advanced engineering, as these sensors proactively counteract disturbances from excessive vibration, ensuring minimal turbulence and sustained performance.

Designed for continuous operation, the WD Red Pro hard drives are built to withstand the rigorous demands of high-intensity, always-on NAS environments, thereby increasing system durability. The drives are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that detects subtle shock events and compensates with dynamic fly height technology, offering additional protection within NAS enclosures.

Compatibility is a key feature of the WD Red Pro series. Western Digital collaborates with a wide range of NAS system vendors to conduct extensive testing, ensuring dependable compatibility with most NAS enclosures. This hard drive is engineered with industry-leading technology, including Western Digital's proprietary OptiNAND technology. This technology leverages integrated iNAND embedded flash to perform essential housekeeping functions, freeing up capacity and enhancing overall drive performance.

When comparing desktop drives to the WD Red Pro, it's crucial to choose a drive purpose-built for RAID-optimized NAS systems to ensure optimal performance and data preservation. Unlike desktop drives, which are not typically designed for the demands of an always-on NAS environment, WD Red Pro hard drives are tailored to perform under the tough conditions of high-intensity, 24x7 multi-user NAS environments. They are RAID-ready, featuring RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within multi-bay NAS systems. Additionally, while desktop drives often lack protection from noise and vibration, WD Red Pro drives include RV sensors to mitigate these issues, making them a superior choice for multi-bay NAS systems.

WD Red Pro NAS HDD Features

  • Ideal for creative pros, medium to large businesses, and commercial/enterprise NAS systems
  • For RAID-optimized NAS systems with an unlimited number of bays
  • Rated for 550TB/year workloads and up to 2.5M hours MTBF
