6TB Red

The 6tb drives slipped easily into my NAS. They've worked perfectly since.

NAS reports low speed on brand new drives.

My NAS already has provided me an alert on each of the BRAND NEW drives I bought of having low speeds.

SMR is not a NAS drive

very frustrated with your marketing these are not suitable drives for most NAS applications after replacing one disc in my TrueNas server I lost my entire VM population all systems went into read only file system mod. because these are SMR disc's and have no business being called NAS drives.

Best hard drive for your NAS, period.

I've used other brands of hard drives for my NAS but the WD RED works the best. Fast downloads on my Synology NAS. No skipping files or bad sectors to worry about.

Nice product but no directions; FRUSTRATION!

Exactly what is expected although w/o instructions to install into a WD RAID, it took a lot more time than needed. I little direction would be nice!

WD60EFAX - a huge disappointment

I purchased the Red 6TB drive as a replacement drive for by 5-bay Drobo connected to our home Mac server, and used for storing Time Machine backups for our 5 computers. The Drobo has only WD Red drives purchased over the past years, gradually swapping in larger Red drives as old ones fail or I needed increased storage space. This is probably at least the 10th Red drive I have swapped in to our Drobo. As soon as I swapped in this drive I noticed it wasn't as usual. The Drobo would unmount and re-mount repeatedly during the RAID rebuild phase. When it was done rebuilding I tested it out by running a Time Machine backup, which should do an incremental change to a sparse bundle file. I noticed that the entire sparsebundle file (1.7TB) was reduced to zero bytes and the backup software prompted to perform a "first backup", i.e. the historical changes were lost. I then noticed that this was the case also for all backup sets for the four other computers in our home. I now realize that the Red drive I purchased uses SMR instead of CMR and that these new Red drives don't appear to be suitable at all for our purpose. I can see that this information is on the website but how can WD make such a significant change to a product line and keep its name? Apparently, the Red is now named Red Plus but that was not obvious at all. I cannot believe how the good people at WD could allow this to happen. This is probably a decent standalone drive but it should not have been allowed to drag the Red (NAS/RAID) product line in the dirt. I am devastated, sad and angry with myself for trusting the product name so deeply that I didn't do research. And I am angry with WD for betraying that trust.

Not lasting

Bought 2 in March 2018. for my NAS.No power surges, light use, after 4 years on one of the drives I have bad sectors and can't use it anymore. I was under the impression that this are professional drives, still have a Black 15 years old that works without issues. Quite disappointed!

SMR tech not for NAS/RAID

Drives failed and had to return them. SMR likely the issue.

2 drive failures in 4 years

MTBF is supposed to be 1 million hours, but I have had two drives in the past 4 months start showing I/O errors and failing SMART Tests. They've only been running for for about 33000 hours. I went out of my way and paid more for Reds since this is supposed to be better for NAS use, but my Blues and Greens in my other stations have similar or longer run times with no issues.

This disk should not be sold

I use(d) WD for a very long time and relied on the fact I never had issues with any of these drives. Until I purchased WD Red 6T for a NAS. I learned WD is very unclear about the fact this drive should not even be used for a NAS (unless maybe single drive but one cannot call that a real NAS). Anyone who has some experience with NAS will put those in RAID mode and this drive is a nightmare when used in RAID.

Drive uses slow syncing SMR technology

Although these drive are labeled NASware 3.0 I found out after I received the drives that they use SMR technology. I intended to use the drives to increase the storage on my ReadyNAS. but in speaking to a Netgear representative he recommended against using SMR technology because they had found them troublesome for writing large files or many files continuously, and especially on RAID sync, scrub, and balance. I researched the drives further and found this was indeed the case. By this time I had already hot swapped one of the drives I'd purchased in anticipation of increasing the storage and upgrading the OS. As part of the upgrade the raid did a resync. The resync took 5 days to complete. This is exactly one of the situations I'd been cautioned about and had seen reported on the internet. In the past my resyncs have completed overnight so I find 5 days unacceptable. In short I don't have confidence in the reliability of SMR drives for my NAS. I requested an RMA be generated to exchange the drives I purchased for the CMR drives I thought I was getting but it's been 2 weeks and I'm still waiting.

Reliability could use some attention

Four 6T drives were purchased in May 2019 for use in a NAS box. Two of the original four still function. One failed for unrecoverable sector errors in August 2021. A second failed in September 2021 ... disk would spin but not ID.

Joining the original color of NAS, WD Red Pro continues the formula of success that has led the WD Red product family by adding support beyond consumer, SOHO and small business markets into medium and large 8-16 bay business storage systems. The Western Digital Red Pro 2TB 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s NAS Storage Hard Drive integrates WD's exclusive technology, NASware3.0, to provide unparalleled support for drive compatibility, reliability and performance.

Professional solutions
Designed specifically with SMB customers in mind the WD Red family has expanded with the addition of WD Red Pro, which is available for the 8 to 16 bay medium to large-scale NAS environments. Engineered to handle the increased workloads from your business.

Exclusive NASware 3.0 technology
The exclusive advanced firmware technology built into every WD Red Pro drive, NASware 3.0 enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in the demanding NAS environment.

Vibration Protection
In combination with 3D Active Balance Plus, WD Red Pro also features hardware vibration compensation technology which monitors the drive to correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time, further increasing drive reliability.

Enhanced Accuracy for NAS
For overall enhanced accuracy for NAS, WD Red Pro is also equipped with dual actuator technology which improves positional accuracy over the data tracks and head positioning. StableTrac technology then secures the motor shaft at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize the drive platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations. Both technologies are important for larger 8 to 16 bay NAS environments.

8 to 16 Bay Shock Protection
WD Red Pro is equipped with a multi- axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in large 8 to 16 bay NAS environments and increases drive reliability.

Extended Drive Testing
The 8 to 16 bay NAS environment is very demanding on a hard drive with added vibration, heat and other factors. This is why every WD Red Pro drive is shipped with extended thermal cycle burn-in testing which ensure each drive for extended reliable operation.

Error Recovery Prevention
Built specifically for RAID and NAS environments, WD Red Pro drives come equipped with error recovery controls as part of NASware 3.0, which prevents the drive from fallout in RAID applications.
