I build custom computers for artists, and they absolutely MUST have reliable, long-term data storage for their art work. WD Red and Gold are the best for their purpose. I purchased two of these in 10TB for in internal RAID 1 array, as these are excellent for long-term, heavy use storage. One of them was bad, with very slow data transfer and loud clicking. WD Customer Service replied quickly with an RMA for a refund and supplied the UPS return label. Problems with WD products are very rare, but when one does occur, their customer service is the best that I've encountered. I've dealt with CS at three of their larger competitors, and it's due to WDs superior response to a problem that their HDDs and SSDs are the only products that I will now use for data storage and transfer. My customers appreciate the reliability of these drives.

Two WD40EFRX were put into PLeX server 7-3-15. Now they still run but along side eight WD80EFAX drives. Each drive has a MyBook B.U. drive. I have not lost a single drive or had a single problem. As with ANY electronic device the first thing I made absolutely sure of was the presence of a Power Supply that has 33% more GOLD power than the power requirements of the whole of all the parts that make up the Device, in this case a Server. I also back that Power Supply up with clean power that only a quality U.P.S. can provide, less ripple, less brown outs (the real killer/not black outs) less PROBLEMS! ?Second I make sure that proper amount of + AND - CFM flow drains the heat from the server....anyone can just slap some fans in a P.C. and say they have proper heat management and many will slap a few extra fans in and say they REALLY have proper heat management. NO, bad user, BAD!! This is not how heat management worx! Read a book or a forum post from someone that does understand proper heat management and get that heat soak out of your drives! With just these two important steps well taken care of my hard drive longevity has made insane increases. Just like any "Review Collection" many people don't seem to take into account that you have absolutely no way of verifying the credentials or even just experience or wisdom of the post's owners. In my R.C. touring car Racing career and P.A./Home/Auto Audiophile hobby/second biz experience i ALWAYS started with fantastic power supply and heat removal! Amplifiers should provide MORE watts than the speakers they drive and the gains turned down to achieve zero THD for example. No one does this anymore, everyone just follows the person in front of them with blinders and blames anyone and everyone else they can when a problem arises.

I had an incredibly disappointing experience with both the product and retailer, making it the worst encounter I've ever had. In March of 2023, I purchased a WS RED PLUS NAS 12Tb, only to discover that the drive was defective and had numerous reallocated sectors. Within the return window, I attempted to exchange the faulty drive for a new one. However, I was informed that it was not possible due to an internal system downtime caused by a compromise. They assured me that once the issue was resolved, I could still exchange the drive for a new one, even if it fell outside the return window. After repeatedly contacting them once their system was back online, they sent me a replacement drive that turned out to be dead on arrival (DOA )and wouldn't power on. It was later revealed that they had actually sent me a refurbished drive under the return merchandise authorization (RMA) process. Despite engaging in multiple back-and-forth messages with their support team to troubleshoot the drive, no solution was found. As of June 28th, 2023, I am still without a functioning drive. It's incredibly frustrating because I have been exceedingly patient and understanding throughout this whole set of events. However, three months is my limit, especially considering that I now have to deal with the additional hassle of the RMA in order to get the bare minimum refund. This entire headache stems from their internal system issues, which have caused significant inconvenience and dissatisfaction.

WD is now using their device analytics to set the NAS drives to WARNING after 3 years of up time! This is insane. I bought your drives and your going to make them essentially useless after 3 years? They should last at LEAST 7+ years. That's why I bought NAS drives for my NAS to run 24/7 for years on end.

I have a quite old, but still excellent WD20EFRX-68AX9N0. Is it a WD Red PLUS product? I can't find this product number in the list.

Just installed a 4tb red plus drive. Local store had them discounted. Used to server drives running around 40c. Not this one, 27c as warm as it gets. SMART hour meter seems to be running twice as fast. Never seen that before. Testing all good otherwise.

My new indoor 8 Tera disk, (I put it as a 2nd disk), just for storage on my Desktop, (before I had 4 Tera), but unfortunately it does not see it with the full capacity of 8 Tera but only as 5 Tera?

Used in a Synology DS 920+ for a plex server. Can't complain after filling the entire drive to the brim with 4K media. A bit loud but you get used to it and eventually stop noticing the drive noises! As for reliability, still too new to tell, it's only been a month! Shipping wise: Little box, drive in ESD bag, 2 plastic black clamshells holding drive secure in the box. My drive was just fine when I unpacked it. Your mileage may vary but I figured I would add a positive review to the recent sea of negative reviews.

Ordered 2 8TB drives on Black Friday. They arrived just over a week later. Each drive was in its own small box inside a slightly bigger box for shipping. It was well packaged with adequate padding, nothing loose. Both drives started right up when plugged into my NAS.

Ordered a 6TB disk from newegg. Didn't have time to migrate until today and it failed immediately and I'm out of the return window for newegg. There was no option to register the product when I got it so I don't have a warranty either.

I intended to buy a couple of Western Digital Red drives directly from Western Digital. It is disheartening to read WD's responses to poor reviews. The responses to not at all address the reviews. Just a cut and paste corporate blurb about manufacturing quality control. The complaints are about SHIPPING and PACKAGING. Due to the poor reviews, but more so due to the tone deaf responses from Western Digital, I will shop elsewhere.

I now have 26 of these drives in 6TB and 8TB sizes and haven't had any trouble from them. I have 16 in two 8-bay enclosures feeding digital media to our Media Center Computer and throughout our house. Music, movies, and pictures. The other 8 are humming along nicely in my Synology NAS. Now I will have to say, the last 2 drives I purchased were in bubble wrap and inside one box. Previous purchases have been in individual drive boxes and then inside one larger box. No harm, drives work perfectly just not packed the way I'm used to from you guys.

I'm using these in a Synology 718+ and have been very pleased so far. I chose Reds over the competition due to better reviews and hopes that they would be quieter than the competition as well, and I have not been disappointed. I'm getting solid data rates to and from my NAS at rates matching or exceeding what Synology considers to be optimum, so they are keeping up just fine.

- CMR drive, NOT one of those terrible SMR drives. Makes it perfect for a ZFS array. - Runs relatively cool in a sound deadened case. - 10TB, what can I say. Formated to about 9TiB - Currently the best $/GB on the market for high capacity drives as of writing this

Drive seems fine, but EXTREMELY disappointed to get drives from 7/2018 for my order from 11/2019. I ordered drives from several different stores, and all the other ones I got were late 2019 manufactured dates. The model numbers are also subtly different than the other drives I ordered, all by searching for “WD Red 8tb” on different sites, and the anti-static bags were noticeably less thick. Don’t know if that is just a packaging change during the intervening year or if I got a lower quality drive. Time will tell. If you want the most current version, definitely do not buy it here. For the price, I would have expected to get drives at least made this year since it wasn’t a super bargain or anything. The two I bought seem to work find and don’t have any issues out of the box, but no idea if being so old will impact my ability to get warranty coverage later or if the older revisions have problems that haven’t been fixed.

It works like a charm. I replaced my damaged 4GB blue drive with this 10GB in my Sonology 6-bay. (The blue drive lasted less than 3 years.) It took 1 day to rebuild and 1 day to check. I hope to have this drive lasts a lot longer. I know the blue drives aren't designed for NAS storage, it came out of a WD Passport.

This is the perfect product for heavy data users that can't afford enterprise grade HDDs, such as the WD RE4. It has a range of features that make it better suited than any other consumer HDD for RAID arrays or ZFS pools, especially for multi-user network environments. I'm replacing several aging WD Greens with these WD Reds.

The WD WD30EFRX Red 3TB NAS hard drive is designed and tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small office Network Attached Storage (NAS). Built in NASware optimizes power use resulting in significant power savings and lower hard drive operating temperatures. This improves the overall reliability and performance of the drive and reduces the NAS of ownership.
