This drive has been reliable, and while it still makes noise is overall the quietest HDD I've ever encountered (WD Red Plus 12tb).

I just built a TrueNAS server using an older PC that is no longer supported for Windows. I had only one HDD, so I needed three identical hard drives to build a RAID stripe. The WD Red Plus were highly recommended. I purchased three and am impressed with how quiet and vibration-free they run. Even after removing the PC's front bezel I can barely hear the drives spinning. I'm closely monitoring the drive temperature. These are 10GB drives that run at 7200 RPM, so they probably run a little hotter than a 5400 RPM drive. In my environment the drives run just above 40C. Removing the front bezel didn't change the drive temperature, but it did lower the CPU temperature. I've already begun building a second TrueNAS server and plan to use the WD Res Plus drives there as well.

These were okay for about a year. Installed both in a RAID so that I could mirror my images onto the second drive. About a year in one drive started making a dreaded start-up noise. Replacing with a cloud workflow because I can tell one if not both of these will be not able to start up or read soon.

1 of 2 drives I ordered were DOA. Purchased this drive on sale. Had to re-order at higher price because if I exchanged they would only give me a recertified drive

Good performance, loudest model of the entire drive line, make sure and review the detail spec on idle operation decibels

So far so good. I've been putting files from my laptop onto this for backup and working well so far.

No issues. Quiet most of the time. Chose 6TB specifically for the noise rating as they live in our bedroom currently.

Product arrived in damaged shipping box, with the drives loose in the box bouncing around, flimsy spacers, turns out missing one of the drives. May have fallen out of the box. But, WD wouldn't refund me. This was one day expedited shipping.

These are as good as I hoped. The bad reviews about sketchy shipping can be ignored. This may have been a thing in the past, but I just got two 12 TB drives in the mail today, and the packaging was awesome. Drives were individually sealed in ESD bags, and were "suspended" with plastic shock-absorbing spacers in individual thick cardboard boxes. Those boxes were packed in a larger cardboard box with "air pillow" packing materials to prevent the individual boxes from moving around.

I was replacing a WD 4TB Red with the same Drive. I could not get my Synology to recognize the drive. I even took out all my drives and put the new drive in different slots, but it still did not recognize the drive. I put all the old drives back in and it recognized them all. Now I still need to replace the one drive taking errors. Customer Service was easy, once I found the number to use. The website asked for the Order number, which did not work. The Customer Service agent asked for the same thing and when I provided it to him, he said that was not the Order Number (even though on the paperwork it specifically showed that). It looks like they wanted the customer PO number and he was able to find the purchase. From there the return was easy, they refund your money and don't replace the drive. So any discounts/sales will be lost on purchasing a new drive from them.

When you buy two new drives and after 5 days you finally receive them make sure to look them up. They sell used drives or refurbished drives as NEW. I am talking about not a replacement drive. NEW from there store they sell refurbished as NEW. How they are getting away with this is behind me. That's right folks I'm not talking about a year later. I'm talking about literally buying a brand new drive from them brand new in their store buying two drives well over $400 and they refer and on top of that the two drives I got neither one of them work, so it's a process to send that crap back to Western digital And they wanted to try to send me a new pair referred drives. I don't think so pal. I'm within 30 days. I'm sending your trash back for a full refund because you're selling me garbage. Do yourself a favor do not buy them.

just as the previous reviewer stated, "unacceptable customer service and business model" i also ordered 2 drives. and one of the drives worked, the other was DOA. the chat feature with WD leads me to think they outsource their support. definite language barrier. also had to push for a RMA even with a drive clicking continuously. they also wanted to charge me for shipping, and i declined and instead chose 2 day return shipping so i could get the drive back faster. i was set to drop it off at ups and pay for the shipping but when i was told by tech support that they will need my cell number or they cant deliver the drive after i send it in. no they do not need your cell number to deliver a box... so i sent off an email to their customer advocacy email and they decided to pay for RMA shipping. the drive was delivered on the 9th of july. they lied and said it was on the 17th. i have the proof with there very own tracking number stating the date and time of delivery as well as the person who signed for it. so i reach back out the 17th only to find that they have no clue whats going on, where the drives at, or if its even been fixed or repaired as i was told it was only a 5 to 7 day to fix, and then ship back a replacement drive. nope. its now the 24th and they still have no idea whats going on, no tracking number, no drive. oh and the best part was when the chat support sends an email finally on the 23 stating that im so lucky that im getting a replacement drive thats gonna be a 6 tb instead of a 4 tb, but the model numbers he listed are the VERY same exact drive, a 4tb WD red plus. trying to get answers from them is like pulling teeth, and you'll get plenty of "we're sorry for the inconvenience" but you wont get much support. ive even had to reach out to them on social media and still didn't get a response till yesterday, stating the same scripted apologies for the inconvenience but no actual answers or fixes. ive been buying WD drives for over 20 years for friends, family, and customers. but after this i'll be buying another brand. oh and when they say you can contact us by phone unless you are from india you'll have a real hard time understanding them as well as them understanding you. shouldn't take 5 mins to get an email spelled out so the chat support can get in entered correctly. For over a decade, I've used these 'WD Red' drives and they've far outlasted their maximum purchasable warranty period. In fact I don't think one has ever failed for me; I've owned five. I have only needed to buy more when I need to upgrade storage capacity. I use these drives in a NAS; a Synology DS214+ enclosure. The 7200 RPM drives (for 10TB and larger of this model) are noticeably louder than the 5400 RPM but I also don't care; that's not what I'm shopping for. I needed a reliable drive with speed/performance that's on par & and a fair price point. This is it. I'm going to keep buying these drives until they give me a reason not to. I bought directly from WesternDigital dot com and the experience was fantastic; the price was the best I could find, shipping was very fast, and the website's checkout experience was modern.

Having a QNAP NAS box, I have found the WD Red Plus drives to be very stable and solid in its performance. currently have 6 drives and have not had an issue with any, dating back to 2015 for the 6TB drives and 2020 for the 12TB drives.

I paired 2 of these drives for my QNAP TS-264 2-Bay High-Performance Desktop NAS. They rattle some but as long as they work and keep working I will be happy with them. In the future I would like to replace them with SSD when I can afford to do so. I can write to these drives and read from them fast. When I call on a saved movie to watch they provide the data without it buffering or lagging. The ultimate test will be how long they last.

Work as advertised, so far so good. I had heard these were noisy drives, but I dont hear a thing. Sometimes when writing large quantities of files it may make a little noise, but otherwise Id never know they were there. Only time will tell how they perform but Im happy with these drives so far.

Works well in my Synology NAS. Has been in a RAID1 config with a Seagate drive. Was packaged well, arrived in better than expected condition.

The new drive to replace a failed drive in a MyCloud NAS arrived DOA. I opened a Support Incident and an RMA on 2 Mar 2024. It is now 23 March 2024 and I have yet to receive notification that a replacement has been shipped. As for the my experience with the Drives themselves I have 2 MyCloud 4 TB NAS's and have been very happy with them.

Drive works great. Don't use on a large scale, but do have multiple family members that access simultaneously without issue
Quiet and Dependable
By ANDREW R.
This drive has been reliable, and while it still makes noise is overall the quietest HDD I've ever encountered (WD Red Plus 12tb).
Take your NAS storage solutions to the next level with the WD Red Plus 4TB 3.5" SATA III Internal NAS Hard Drive, available in a convenient 2-pack. These powerful hard drives are meticulously engineered for performance, reliability, and power efficiency, making them ideal for small to medium NAS environments. Designed to handle the demanding workloads of power users and small to medium business NAS setups, WD Red Plus drives deliver the speed and capacity necessary to store, protect, and share growing amounts of data efficiently.
Optimized for mid-sized RAID-optimized NAS systems, these drives offer increased power efficiency, ensuring that your NAS operates smoothly without excessive energy consumption. The inclusion of Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology fine-tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads, enhancing both performance and reliability.
Built for continuous operation, WD Red Plus hard drives are designed to function 24x7, providing users with the confidence of reliable data access at all times. Extensive compatibility testing with a wide range of NAS system vendors ensures that these drives integrate seamlessly with most NAS enclosures, offering dependable performance.
Engineered for a lower total cost of ownership, WD Red Plus drives consume less power and run cooler compared to previous models, reducing operating costs and minimizing heat in thermally challenged NAS boxes. Despite their power efficiency, these drives maintain robust performance, capable of handling the mixed demands of multi-drive NAS systems.
Enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves balance, reducing vibration and noise in multi-drive systems, which in turn increases the overall drive lifespan and reliability. Unlike desktop drives, which are not typically designed for RAID-optimized NAS systems, WD Red Plus drives are purpose-built to ensure optimum performance and data preservation.
With RAID error recovery control, these drives help reduce failures within multi-bay NAS systems, providing a level of reliability that generic desktop drives cannot match. Additionally, WD Red Plus drives feature Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors that proactively counteract disturbances caused by increased vibration, ensuring smooth operation in multi-bay NAS environments.
Choose WD Red Plus for a hard drive solution that is specifically designed and tested for NAS, offering unmatched compatibility, reliability, and performance for your always-on, high-intensity NAS environment.
