NAS 18TB Red Pro - Packaged in a 10x8x4 box loose

WD has always been my favorite HDD, I have not had one fail yet "Knock on Wood" My Black drives are still working great I have 10 of them in 3 different gaming PC going back to 2014. started my Nas in 2018 bought 4 18tb Red pro, then 2 more in 2022, now I bought 2 more red pros - this is the 1st time the drives did not come in the normal packaging, they where loose in a big box - unbelievable, Now I'll be worried about those 2 drives failing in RAID. I thought buying start from the company I wouldn't have to worry about getting refurb drive on a new purchase .. it sadens me that i have to have this extra worry :( :)

Good Professional Home NAS drives

Excellent choice for a professional home NAS. I have these in a RAID10 4-bay NAS. After a recent multi-disk failure (they were pretty old) with WD Reds, I decided to get the Red Pro's this time now that they are available. I don't need a lot of space so I leaned towards the smaller size.

Horrible. Bad drives

Do not buy from WD. I purchased 2 12tb hdd on there deal they had if you buy two. Order on 8-18-24. They shipped and arrived 8-26-24. Took them out put them in my NAS. Powered on nothing. Won't format. Took drives out and plugged both Into pc. Drives just click. Will not be seen by any pc. Contact support and the don't do advance replacement where they ship first before you ship defective hdd back. So I have to send both drives you figure 7-10 days before they are processed. Then they shop out new ones. Which another 7-10 days. Now am pretty much then going to be past 30day return window if I receive any other bad drive. Then they will send you a referb hdd back. So I am sending back for full refund. On top of that they won't honor their deal for 2 12tb for 409.99. Now going to buy segate

Depending on WD Reputation for 7x24 use

This is my second NAS using these drives. The one challenge I had was a problem Tech Support diagnosed with one of four drives that did NOT trigger a diagnostic at the NAS, but was preventing the latest firmware update. Painful to have to first strip the files to then replace that Red Pro drive and rebuild the RAID -- versus the supposed process to be able to replace a failing drive and let the RAID provide the self-resolution.

Getting cheated on warranty years on New Drive

I just recived my new WD Red Pro drive just to find out that I'm getting shorted 2 years of the 5 year limited warranty. What the heck is all that about when paying full price for a NAS drive?

WD's Warranty Policy gives you REFURBISHED drives

Be aware of WD's 'warranty policy'. I had a drive arrive DOA/bad sectors and their 'policy' is to replace your drive with a 'Refurbished' had drive. On top of that, I bought this drive directly from Wester Digital. I had specifically gone with WD drives, but after being the victim of this, I'll probably go SeaGate on my next drives.

WD DRIVES ARE MY FAV

I've been buying and using Western Digital Drives since the 90s and they are STILL running. Bought (4) 3TB Drives about 10 years back and wanted to build a new NAS to replace them. I wanted to get a couple more but the Black Friday sale ended so I'll wait for now. Only been about a month but they are running great ???? it's crazy to think when I was a kid in the late 90s that the largest drives were about 1GB to 3GB and now 20 years later we have single drives that are well over 6,000x larger. I've used 100s of hard drives over the years for myself, friends, family and customers and Western Digital are the most reliable IMO. It's even better being able to order straight from the source. Only thing that bothers me about these drives is they don't have all the screw holes on the bottom like my old 3TB drives and my old Quit Case Trays they sit on only line up with 2 of the screw holes. Something to consider. Other than that working good, much quicker, pretty quiet and tons of storage, I should be good for another decade ??

Think before you buy

Beware of DOA - RMA process is super slow. Purchased 4, 1 DOA, took a month to get replaced, from brand new, waiting a month was not acceptable. So be aware when purchasing.

WD Red may be SMR and sold as NAS worthy

Be careful of what you get. Ordered 5 WD Red claimed to be for a NAS, for my Drobo, but the NAS slowed to a creep. Later found out WD sold SMR drives as NAS capable under the WD Red label, WD60EFAX Vendor would not take them back, so using them as single backup drives. Ironwolf now in the Drobo, and FAST!

DOA HDD

Waited a month for an 18TH HDD that was dead on arrival, had to return it and pay $50 more for the exact same HDD because they can't just replace it.

Where is it?

It's been a few days less than a month and I still don't have it, yet I was sent a review form from the manufacturer. Maybe they don't talk to each other?

bad store

ordered at the beginning of april, it's now mid may with no drives in sight. they email every couple of weeks saying it will be shipped eventually, no specific status update and no ability to cancel online. I don't need these drives any more, I got replacements from seagate, so don't even bother.

I sent mine back due to noise (click of death)

I got these because they should be the best possible drive for My Cloud Expert Series EX2 Ultra, it came with two 4TB Red drives at 5400 RPM, absolutely silent but not the fastest. So based on the capacity, speed, and CRM vs SRM I was sold and these were on sale for 200 or so. Got the drives and removed one of the 4TB drives and rebuilt the RAID1 mirror. I quickly noticed how much louder the pro drive was than the regular and that it had almost a rythmic thud, made me think click of death. Kept moving forward hoping it was something about the RAID build process. Replaced the other 4tb with the second 12tb, expanded the drive and I had a 12tb mirror just like I wanted. Extreemly fast in comparison with the 4TB WD Red drives but was hot and extremely loud, across the room loud. Lived with it for a week and decided that I deserver better for what I pay. Initiated a return and picked up two 12tb Red Plus drives, these are almost as good but dead slient in my NAS. They are not as responsive or do not move as much data but the are certainly an upgrade from the 4tb WD Red that the NAS came with and to be honest they were not bad either, just lower capacity and a bit slower. Disappointed as I really wanted to Red Pro drives but simply could not deal with the noise they made nor the risk to may data.

WD our 'Old Dependables'

My original NAS 'red' drive on my PR4100 faulted after 9+ years continuous use. I bought a Toshiba 8Tb NAS replacement drive and it over heated and died within 3 days, returned it to Amazon.

Working great in my Video Editing PC build.

I needed a big HDD for my video editing build in a gaming PC platform and this was just the ticket. I was concerned about shipping, packaging etc because of others' reviews, but it came in a box with molded plastic end pieces holding it away from the sides securely. No complaints! The drive rarely makes noise that can be heard over my cooling fans, and when it does, it's just normal HDD sounds I've heard all PCs make in the past.

So far so good!

It's kind of difficult to rate a hard drive! if it hasn't failed then I love it! Once it fails, I hate it! But the NAS spec is supposedly tough as nails--I'm counting on that, as I'm using two WD Red Pro 12TB NAS drives as Time Machine backups for my Apple Mac Studio Ultra setup.

WD Red NAS drives are a reliable choice

I've been using a 4-bay My Cloud PR-4100 NAS with 4x4Tb WD Red for years and one of those drives failed, so I replaced them with 8Tb drives to bring my hardware up to date and to double the storage capacity. As soon as I inserted one of the new 8T drives, the NAS started populating them from the 3 remaining disks (creating s 4Tb volume that matched the old configuration.

Working Just Fine

So far it's been good. After about 5 days since I successfully increased the capacity of my NAS from four 8TB WD Red drives to these four 12TB Red Pro drives there have been no issues, and the conversion went without any issues, as well. We'll see how they pass the test of time and use, but I've had no issues either with the previous 8TB drives that a few years back I had put in to replace the previous 4TB drives I had originally started out using with my NAS.

So far so good

Only time will tell, but these appear to be doing the job. I use them inside my Thunderbay 8 enclosure. I'm getting about 600MB/s write and 1500MB/s read with RAID 5. I bought the drives with the intention of letting them run pretty much constantly. I don't want to have to replace them for at least five years. We'll see, but so far so good.

WD Red Pro 18TB

By VictoryJerry

I can't put in words how great these Red Pro drives are. This is my second Red Pro drive adding to my Alienware R8. I have been building my home library for streaming. My friends were all saying to get a Synology NAS system but I had a perfectly good R8 that I wasn't using for gaming or anything so I thought why not use it. The area I live in (near Chattanooga, TN) is where the EPB Electrical Utility has the GIG Fiber available to all of it's customers. I know my i9 processor might be overkil...

great drives, great packaging

By Alan S.

I love WD's higher end drives like the Blacks, Reds, and Purples (Greens and Blues are garbage). I pretty much use WD exclusively, except for SSD which I prefer Samsung Evo's . I have 2 Synology NAS' with WD Reds in Raid 5 arrays (4 drives each). one drive starts to die approximately every 3 years (IO errors with a few bad sectors). I just configured a new Synology RS820+ in raid 10 w/(4) 4tb WD Red pro drives. No problems at all. The drives were shipped in OEM boxes, within a bigger box. All...

WD Red Pro NAS HDD. For the Demands of Big Business.
Designed specifically with medium or large scale business customers in mind, WD Red Pro NAS HDDs are available for up to 24-bay NAS systems. Engineered to handle high-intensity workloads in 24x7 environments, WD Red Pro is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as RAID array rebuilding on extended operating systems such as ZFS or other file systems. These drives add value to your business by enabling your employees to quickly share their files and back-up folders reliably in your NAS solution.

Exclusive NASware 3.0 Technology
Our exclusive advanced firmware technology, NASware 3.0, enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for NAS systems operating under heavy demand. Built into every WD Red Pro hard drive, NASware 3.0's advanced technology improves storage performance by increasing compatibility, integration, upgradeability, and reliability.

Built for Optimum NAS Compatibility
WD Red Pro drives with NASware technology takes the guesswork out of selecting a drive. Optimized for NAS systems, our unique algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments. Simply put, a WD Red Pro drive is one of the most compatible drives available for NAS enclosures. But don't take our word for it. WD Red Pro drives are a reflection of extensive NAS partner technology engagement and compatibility-testing.

Larger NAS Bay Shock Protection
WD Red Pro NAS HDDs are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in larger 24-bay NAS environments and helps increase hard drive reliability.

3D Active Balance Plus
Our enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time.

Error Recovery Prevention
Built specifically for RAID and NAS environments, WD Red Pro NAS HDDs come equipped with error recovery controls as part of NASware 3.0 technology to help reduce drive fallout in RAID applications.

Extended Drive Testing
A NAS environment that has up to 24 bays is very demanding on a hard drive with added vibration and heat. This is why every WD Red Pro drive is shipped with extended thermal cycle burn-in testing to help ensure each drive is tested for extended reliable operation.

Desktop drives vs. WD Red Pro
Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

• Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance
• Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren't typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red Pro drives are
• Error Recovery Controls: WD Red Pro NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system
• Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red Pro drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments

WD Red Pro Features

  • 8TB Capacity with support for NAS systems with up to 24 bays
  • Supports up to 300TB/yr workload rate
  • Enhanced reliability with 3D Active Balance Plus technology and error recovery controls with NASware 3.0 technology
