Shared Folders Vanish . DO NOT TRUST !

I used this MyCloud for over a year. And setup 4 shares. (customers, media, backup, storage) I removed "storage" and it deleted the customers folder. yes, after it asked twice "are you sure you want to delete STORAGE" Tech support was no help. apparently it's a common problem. I demonstrated this to tech support. made a new share "NEW-SHARE" picked delete NEW-SHARE and my MEDIA folder vanished. Tech support was like "Oops Sorry , hope you had backups" =( That's the sole reason I bought this ..was to have backups.

Excellent home NAS

I bought the unpopulated version and added several 4TB drives I had on hand. I've had the unit for over 8 years and have not had a lick of trouble. Only once did I get concerned because the drives / fan ran continually for a couple hours. I've needed to reboot it twice to fix problems win10 was having with it. Upgrading from OS3 to OS5 was a snap. I just wish I could load KODI onto it as PLEX and the WD Media app leave a lot to be desired. And I wish it had cost less for just the enclosure.

WD EX4100

I just recently received a new EX4100 16 TB NAS. As i currently own a EX4 NAS which is very similar to the EX4100 thus making the setup very easy and quick. I use the NAS a a backup device for 6 pc's. The new unit is considerably faster. The EX4100 allows me to schedule a regular backup on all pc's in a "set it and forget it" manner. Very convenient and time saving. It is a very nice place for fifty+ years of pictures.

Quite happy so far

I received my EX4100 very fast. I unpacked and when I was initializing, I had a "bad" drive right off the bat. Called tech support and they were great! Got me up and running within minutes and assisted me in finalizing my setup. So far everything has worked perfectly. It is very fast and I love the fact I can access all my files from anywhere through the internet. Couldn't be happier. Highly recommend!

I love it, but...

Implemented this NAS last March 30 in our home office. All good until it failed with 'Power Supply Failure' three times late September. Wd wanted to replace with 'reconditioned' one, I insisted on a new one. Replacement arrived 2 weeks later obviously used. Meantime I discovered mine works if I don't use my surge protector. And a caution:. This device is discontinued and no longer supported. Tech support could not figure out the problem. I returned the replacement and kept mine. I have mine loaded with 22tb of data and system backups, and I'm a bit nervous.

WD My Cloud EX4100 review

I had the EX4, and loved it. Unfortunately WD stopped supporting it and it failed a firmware upgrade and became useless and I have to destroy it. I was able to use the drives from the EX4 in the EX4100, so my data was saved. I purchased the EX4100 without any drives, but the unit still cost more than $350 USD. The EX4100 works great AFTER I found out I had to load the Twonkey server media APP in order to play videos/photos, etc. on my smart TV's connected to my network. Let's hope WD does not stop supporting the EX4100 EVER!

Unable to invite users

HDD installation and initial startup went fine , but I am unable to add accounts other than the Admin. Any invites sent to other users fail. Even though I send the invite via e-mail, when they click the link they get an error message saying their request to join is rejected by admin.

Extremely easy to set up.

I do have experience with some other WD network drives, but not this one. I literally had this set up and working in about 10 minutes. The admin interface seems to have been improved in a few areas and I found it intuitive and most of the decisions were self-evident. I was looking for a drive array that has some expansibility and this looks like the right one, although I won't really know that until some time in the futre.

Peace of Mind

I purchased this because a family member had over 30,000 pictures and videos on her iphone. These are backed up in icloud, however, they cannot be deleted from her phone without being deleted from icloud. We did the Google Photos thing as well. The problem with all these cloud services is that we are dependent on the providers to maintain services and keep our pictures private. They cannot guarantee either of those. It took some time for the My Cloud Expert Series EX4100 to back up her phone because of our home internet speed and the fact that there were over 30,000 files to upload. We have successfully uploaded all those photos and videos. It was a quick and easy install as well. Anyone with just a little tech savvy can do this. We are so excited now. All her photos and videos are safe and secure in a place that we manage. We are now in the process of uploading digital photos and videos from previous phones and devices. We are able to access the photos and videos from anywhere. We can also disconnect our pictures from the web at any time. This product has brought peace of mind to my home.

A More Powerful NAS. I had a 2 bay 12 TB WD and one of the storage bays heated up and faulted. So I purchased the EX 4100.

I had the previous version for about 9 years without any real issues. This one seems to work well and a bit faster. The OS5 app works perfect too.

Worked well for a little while but drives failing

The EX4100 (16TB) was purchased as a storage for our lab and shared across multiple users and has worked well for about 2 years. But now one of the drives is failing despite never being moved.

So far so good!

I have four of the EX4100 series NAS devices in use and so far they have been quite reliable. The first one was put in place around January of 2019, the second around April of 2019, the third in December of 2019, and the most recent in February of 2020. I try to keep the firmware updated and so far they have performed quite well. For the most part they are all used for archival and backup purposes. In one client installation it is used for primary shared file storage (frequent reads/writes) but is also backed up nightly.

Once it is setup I expect it to be great, but...

I have read reviews and a lot of them say the WD Drives are not easy to set up and I would agree. I am still in the process and have two other WD Drives, but it is not intuitive at all. Once I got the others setup I was pleased, but I hate to buy something and then have to research and watch videos when a functional wizard would be great.

Great protection for the money.

This is my 4th or 5th WD NAS drive. Granted, they're not the fastest, but my luck with them has been very good, and they are reasonably priced; like in the range of 6-8 years before I begin to have any issue with them at all. One older model I had in service for 9 years. And they seem to kind of "let you know" they're having issues before you have any real trouble, so I've never lost any data. (They begin to slow down, don't connect quickly when you reboot your computer...) This new one is so plug & play, you basically don't have to do anything except plug it into your switch (or router) and you're golden. One tip that will save you a little bit of time (and possible frustration) is that you may not be able to Browse on the network to see it. You just have to create a mapped drive, like \\WDMyCloudEX4100\Public, and you're good to go. That's about it. The software is super simple to understand, and setting up the remote access is also easy.
