Wow! Hitachi/HGST never used to fail like now WD!

Wow, I've bought a few WD and lots of Hitachi/HGST drives - didn't know that WD who bought the name of a superior drive (Hitachi) was now putting out such crap, like Seagate used to be! When 25% of the reviews complain about seriously defective drives, there is ample cause for fear! This is always what happens when an American (Ashkenazi-run company) buys a successful brand - they milk it for all they can, all the while now putting out a cheaper, inferior product while selling the name/reputation. I'll have to seriously look at other drive manufacturers now as I don't want to be part of the 25%+ that experience drive failure and lose data (in addition to the hassle/stress!).

Fast and Quiet

I purchased 3 of the 4-TB Gold hard drives a few weeks ago and have not had any problems with them. The 7200 rpm feature makes the read/write function really fast. The main thing that I want to mention is that these drives are quiet - no click-clacks resulting from drive head seeking motions. Only time will reveal to me how reliable they are.

Great Hard Drive

Being a server-class HDD, this drive is a bit heavier than what usually comes standard with most desktop computers. I had no trouble installing and it fired right up. It's quite fast and has the extra storage capacity that I need. Highly recommended.

Perfect for 8-drive RAID-50 in PLEX movie server

Perfect for PLEX movie server. Used in 8 @ 4TB drive RAID50 Mediasonic external enclosure. Connected USB-A (3.1 mode); transfer rate always exceeds 100MBytes/sec. This setup previously used similar WD lower-capacity drives that worked continuously and flawlessly for many years.

Awesome Hard Drive 4TB 256MB cache

WD Gold is one of the best hard drives out there. But, It seems to make a little rattle from time to time and I don't see a 256MB cache feel. Great drive though.

Dead drive

Bought the top of the WD line, but the drive came dead. Had to return.

Very happy with buying experience and with drives.

Great for my purposes. Much less noise than some other comments. Works great in my Synology DS212J... yes it's 9 years old, and still going strong. Why buy through Amazon from questionable sellers, when company-direct for verified-new is same price with much more trust.

A little worried

These HDDs are highly recommended and I have had great luck with WD drives in the past. They are set up in a raid 1+0 and are used as daily back-ups of work data on a TB3 external enclosure. Throughput is good and they continually pass all diagnostics. The reason for 3 of 5 stars is that at least one of the drives and likely 2 are very noisy. They rattle, clank and gurgle when accessed (not the head crashing type of noise). Because of that I may be replacing them. The shopping exp was good, delivery was fast, packaging was excellent, performance as stated is good.

Long Time WD Owner And Never Disappointed

Purchased a new Omen desktop screaming machine. This was exactly what the doctor ordered. I have a WD disk drive (external) that I've owned for over 10 years. It's case was broken in a move, but it is still humming along. Love WD. Thanks again for a great product. All my SSD drives are WD, also. Nothing compares. I was IT in my past career, and I always loved your hard drives.

Five Gold Stars for WD Gold

WD is the gold standard for hard drives. I have used the Black Edition for over 20 years. For my latest build I decided to install n SSD fro the OS and program files. I would use the WD Gold for data. I am very happy with my WD choices. The Gold 4 TB responds well. Based on my experience, I expect this drive to function well beyond its 5 year warranty. I have never had a WD drive to fail, but usually replace them by year 8. Five Gold stars for the WD 4 TB Gold Edition.

About WD Gold

Drive to endure
WD Gold hard drives feature up to ten times the workload rating of desktop drives and employ advanced technologies for enterprise class reliability, power efficiency and performance. Designed from the ground up to be an ultra-robust storage device, WD Gold drives are the perfect solution for your business.

High workload rating
Delivering dependable performance to any storage environment, WD Gold hard drives are designed with a workload rating up to 550TB per year , among the highest of any 3.5-inch hard drive.

Enterprise-class storage to rely on
With up to 2.5 million hours MTBF, WD Gold hard drives deliver reliability and durability, are built for yearly operation (24x7x365) within the most demanding storage environments and are backed with a 5 year limited warranty.

HelioSeal Technology
Featured in over 15 million Western Digital hard drives shipped, HelioSeal technology allows for higher capacities and less turbulence on large storage arrays. And now on its 4th generation design, HelioSeal technology is field-tested and proven to deliver high capacity, reliability and power efficiency you can trust.

Vibration protection
Enhanced RAFF technology uses sophisticated electronics to monitor the drive and correct linear and rotational vibrations in real time for improved performance versus WD's desktop drives in high-vibration environments.

RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER)
Reduces drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.

Dynamic fly height technology
Each read-write head's fly height is adjusted in real time to ensure consistent performance for reduced errors and optimized reliability.

Dual-stage actuator technology
WD Gold drives feature a dual-stage actuator head positioning system for a high degree of accuracy. The primary stage provides course displacement while the secondary stage uses piezoelectric motion to fine tune the head positioning to a higher degree of precision.
