I have a Seagate standup Thunderbolt SATA send where I normally run a 6TB WD HDD for Time Machine. I wanted to upgrade to 16TB but when I turned it on the mechanical noise was massive and it never mounted. Sounded like the disks were going to fly out.I got an RMA but called Customer Support and got lame response that NAS drives are not designed to do this kind of use. (SATA is not SATA???) and suggested I call Seagate support to find out more on my now 8 year old Thunderbolt base. Right... Existing WD 6tb works fine and same 6GBS rated. It would have been nice to be offered a replacement. My main gripe with tech support is how shallow the response like he didn't any real idea of how things work....or not.

I have used Western Digital all my computer life, I am blessed to not have experienced other companies problem making! I hear from friends, relatives and common conversation what it is like with these drive manufacturers. I tell you the truth you cannot do better than Western Digital thy quality is there in everything they make or your money back. If you are aloof then you can follow directions and figure out what does ail thy drive usually some unknown factor in your build is straining thy drive beyond tolerance if they fail however they are honest, you can get a refund, replacement or tech support.

I got these drives from the weekly sale, they had some website issues but was finally able to get them, I read a lot of reviews that said the packaging sucked, so I was hesitant to buy from here, however, the packaging was perfect.

This is a follow-up to my review about a year ago. Again, my use case is an 8 drive RAID in a Linux system (Fedora). These drives were purchased Nov 2020. I have also since moved from an Adaptec RAID card to a MegaRAID card, to hopefully get a better experience, however, that did not help. I was running these as a RAID 5, but because of the failure rates I have switched to a RAID 6. I have now had 10 of these drives replaced in 8 RMAs (88473645 88545097 88568417 88587158 65073767 65099873 65155823 65162324 65191095). Smartctl is also giving me the tell-tale warning signs that another is now going out (increasing ATA error count). So WD may expect my 11th RMA very soon. The response to my last review, to contact customer support, went no-where. I did as suggested and it seemed to be promising at first. However, I got bounced around 3 different groups and eventually no more replies. Again, these drives appear to do very well as stand-alone drives. But in a Linux RAID, seriously, hands-down the worst drive I've ever had the misfortune to use. And as an IT pro with over 20+ years...I've used a LOT of drives, different types, configurations, etc. I would not ever recommend this drive as a RAID drive. WD customer support on this matter was a disappointment. However, their RMA program is fantastic.

I needed an upgrade to my PR2100 server drives and the WD Red Pros are just the best. They are very well made and are an excellent product, I would buy them again.

I would rather this have shipped in a box vice a mailer envelope. The box was pretty rounded off at the corners. Wholly relying on MFGR packaging doesn't always work well. It's three days in service so I suspect it's going to last.

Tried a Seagate one first, and it failed immediately. Have had good success with WD Red in the past, although sticking to Pro version only because of downgrades on regular Red version

Hard to give a good review after only having it for a week. It's a little noisier than I would prefer, but it seems fast for a standard mechanical hard drive.

Bought this Red Pro to replace a faulty drive on my NAS. Went with Pro (instead of regular Red) for the added shock protection and longer (almost twice) rated workload rate (300 vs 180 TB/year). My specific application of NAS will likely not hit that high of workload but the higher rating gives me peace in mind (placebo effect or not, it is my preference to have the highest expected performance for what I am willing to pay, especially if on sale ;-) ).

Yet to have a WD Red PRO or RED HD fail. Reason for this purchase was upgrading a 3T mirror to 6T mirror. Setting at my desk I can see 24 WD REDs at work. With no HD failures since I switch to WD RED I question my installing raid 6 controller.

These are excellent drives with the durability of NAS and near performance of the Black drives. Fast and quiet. Use the 8TB mainly for backup and the 4TB for RAID. So far no failures going back about 2 years. 5 year warranty. They do run a bit warm but not excessive. The main downside is they are a little pricey.

WD RED 8TB NAS

Because enterprise environments demand robust and reliable storage solutions, the WD Red Pro 3.5" SATA III Internal NAS Hard Drive is engineered to meet these high standards. Specifically designed for commercial and enterprise NAS systems, this hard drive excels in handling high-intensity workloads in 24x7 multi-user settings. The WD Red Pro series is synonymous with performance, scalability, and dependability, making it an ideal choice for businesses that need to store, share, and collaborate on large volumes of data within multi-bay RAID-optimized NAS systems.
Optimized for NAS environments, the WD Red Pro features Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology. This innovation fine-tunes drive parameters to align with NAS system workloads, enhancing both performance and reliability. The inclusion of Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors is a testament to its advanced engineering, as these sensors proactively counteract disturbances from excessive vibration, ensuring minimal turbulence and sustained performance.
Designed for continuous operation, the WD Red Pro hard drives are built to withstand the rigorous demands of high-intensity, always-on NAS environments, thereby increasing system durability. The drives are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that detects subtle shock events and compensates with dynamic fly height technology, offering additional protection within NAS enclosures.
Compatibility is a key feature of the WD Red Pro series. Western Digital collaborates with a wide range of NAS system vendors to conduct extensive testing, ensuring dependable compatibility with most NAS enclosures. This hard drive is engineered with industry-leading technology, including Western Digital's proprietary OptiNAND technology. This technology leverages integrated iNAND embedded flash to perform essential housekeeping functions, freeing up capacity and enhancing overall drive performance.
When comparing desktop drives to the WD Red Pro, it's crucial to choose a drive purpose-built for RAID-optimized NAS systems to ensure optimal performance and data preservation. Unlike desktop drives, which are not typically designed for the demands of an always-on NAS environment, WD Red Pro hard drives are tailored to perform under the tough conditions of high-intensity, 24x7 multi-user NAS environments. They are RAID-ready, featuring RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within multi-bay NAS systems. Additionally, while desktop drives often lack protection from noise and vibration, WD Red Pro drives include RV sensors to mitigate these issues, making them a superior choice for multi-bay NAS systems.
