Rubbish

If I could go back in time and tell myself that this product is trash, I would. This product is garbage. The specs are terrible, the OS is absolutely trash. Go buy a Synology, significant value for money, the software on this is rubbish.

Easy to Use

I love that I can access my cloud from my phone or any other device and my files are organized and safe using RAID1 mirroring.

Love it, has been excellent for the last 8 years

Using it since 2017 (12TB version), bought on Ebay from WD, and then the fan made a noise, WD replaced with a completely new unit incl. new HDD's. It never failed me, using as storage but not using in Raid configuration. 2x 6TB drives. Initially used with remote access enabled but only for a short time, for safety decided to only use on our local network. Now 8 years later this thing is still working 100% fine and one of the few devices that never let me down. Important is the initial proper setup, I use it with a static IP. I like the simplicity of this unit, never have to open the dashboard.

Small business owner

Documentation on setup could be greatly improved. Need something in writing included, not just a small card saying go to this or that website.

Was easy to setup.

I like having my cell phones connected and photos uploaded automatically. Usually less than 5 mins. If I wish I can make albums to store..

It saves data but exteremely clunky/ hard to use

I purchased this new from Best Buy with 2 - 4 TB hard drives preinstalled. I agree with all of the previous comments about connectivity instability. This is very extreme. One minute the NAS will be connected and show up in Windows Explorer and the next it is unreachable. If you have an electrical interruption of any sort plan on remapping all of the drives/partitions you have created. The mapping process is not very straight forward and very clunky. One of the worst problems is that you cannot copy over whole folders but must backup your files one file at a time. You can zip a folder to get around this but it is very annoying with large files taking an hour or more to zip and then unzip once it has been saved.

Corrupting Excel files

I store all of my files in this device. I have an Excel spreadsheet with all of my passwords. I had just finished updating dozens of passwords. I saved the document, then attempted to open it again and it gave me an error stating that the file was corrupted. There is no tool out there that can help me recover the file. I made copies of several other files. Opened the files and they all became automatically corrupted. I made copies of these files again and saved them in my Mac and on the attached SSD. They opened fine without corrupting the files. It didn't matter if I restarted the Mac or the device; I got the same outcome. I noticed that other users have encountered similar issues but I don't see any resolutions. The app diagnostics states that the drives are in a good healthy state. Thinking of getting a different device to save my critical files.

Stay Away. Better off with REAL Cloud Storage

Both drives failed after 14 months. WD did not take responsibility for the data recovery. Better off with a REAL cloud base. WD, never again.

Nothing wrong but nothing special

Since many reviewers complain about hardware-issues I wanted to present my experience. I have had my EX2 Ultra (8TB) for about 2 years and haven't had a single hardware related problem. No failed drives and no power-related problems. Even with repeated power failures the unit has always restarted correctly. I also think the build quality is really good and I'm very happy about the physical unit. However, I do not really like it's software-features and I think especially the cloud-features are garbage, at least compared to the older EX2-series. Before this I had an older EX2 (4TB) unit and I loved it. But as many others I was forced to replace my old, beloved, EX2 because of incompatibility with the new My Cloud OS 5. Unfortunately I didn't like the new os. Much of the configuration is a bit too much "plug-and-pray", and I especially hated the new mobile app. Because of that I have since left mycloud completely and am now running my own home-made cloud solution instead. So currently my unit is an expensive LAN-NAS only. I am however a bit of a nerd and don't like being told what to do, so maybe take what I said whit a grain of salt. And I haven't used any of the features for about a year and a half so maybe they are better now. I still think it's a very good NAS. But if your are not going to use any of the cloud-features there are other, more priceworthy, alternatives.

Erases your data instead of protecting it

Equipment never worked as designed and caused far more problems than solutions. A few examples of my journey with the product: 1. Set-up process budding at every stage for different reasons - I took me 2-3 weeks to finally get it working with cloud access; 2. WD's multiple login credentials (support site / store / main site) - cause confusion in setting up and managing the product. Don't believe the "One login for all WD" slogan... 3. Time Machine Backup for mac OS worked for a few days and out of the blue the volume stopped being accepted by MacOS. Even after rebooting the system and starting from scratch, I was never able to make it work again 4. After the latest firmware update I lost all data in my spanning volume 5. After deciding to re-format the spanning volume, the system removed my cloud account and now I lost all data in all my volumes. This product is supposed to provide easy access and back-up to your data, but all it does is erase your data when you least expect it.

A good bit of kit

Don't know why so many people gave it a 1 or 2 rating, I have had this 8Tb unit for almost 3 yrs. and never had a problem with it once, Software would be a lot better if one could drag and drop folders instead of individual files. This is really a bit old hat. But as far as accessing and copying files from anywhere including abroad one should have no complaints. This was an upgrade from an older unit which became obsolete, this unit will probably run until it also becomes obsolete, It reliable, quiet and does the backup job in the background, Excellent piece of kit.

My New Home Cloud

I'm very satisfied with it so far in the month that I've had it. No complaints. There's a few minor things to learn, like how to add users. But it's fairly easy to learn.

Can't get order corrected

Unit came with a South American Type C plug which I did not order, even though it was shipped to me in the US. I immediately contacted WD support and initiated an incident report but it has been 3 weeks now with multiple follow ups and no progress on getting a US power cord. If I ever get a cord and can plug the unit in I will update my review.

EX2 Ultra - So far, so good

I purchased the EX2 Ultra (4TB) with the intent of putting my catalog of videos onto the drive. Now a few years later, I have just about filled up 2TB of the first drive. The problem with this is that I cannot see the other drive. It only recognizes one drive and shows nothing on the other. Not sure how this is possible since you can physically see the drive in the bay. It has been reliable and I have had no problems with the drive. I only wish that there was a wireless option.

Inferior product

Stay away from this product - unsupported mess that will never stay connected for a long enough period of time to be considered a viable NAS solution.

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT

Bought a new 8TB 2-drive system in September. In Jan-2024, one of the drives failed. WD sent replacement drive with rebuilt drives. Have been arguing with WD about sending inferior product for the last 2 weeks. Today, both of the rebuilt drives failed. This equipment is horrible and the service is worse. DON'T BUY THIS DEVICE!!!

fails at primary purpose

terrible product. lack of caching results in really long wait times for unit to wake from sleep on any action. worse, one drive has been failing and i will replace it, the only way i found out, is the fan was running on high on the actual unit, which is in a closet. zero log entries (yes with extended logging turned on), zero email alerts. these are basic functions: keep data safe, and tell me when a drive needs replacing. buy something else.

Western Digital, enough said.

I purchased this product loaded with the 8 terabyte drives right from the western digital website. It is very inexpensive compared to the competition. It worked fine for almost 2 years, but then, you guessed it, drive failure. I contacted western digital in July to get them to warranty their drives, they agreed if I could procure the original receipt. I found the order, and the credit card receipt, but during that time frame, you guessed it, they had a system failure. I'm out the couple hundred extra bucks and the moral is, I should have learned my lesson for good the first time I purchased western digital drives in the early 2000's. I won't ever make that mistake again.

Excellent Product

I purchased the 12 TB EX2 4 years ago. It runs 24 hrs continuously without any issues. It's not a toy for just storing data. This is a serious machine that does serious work. It can do everything you need for home and your business. Record streaming video that you can set up for a 4:00am TV recording. Plug your device in the usb to back up your machine. Windows Mac OS IOS Android mp4 all photos from all devices. It will automatically backup your phone pad computer cameras and portable storage that is on WiFi or Data. It will mirror backup index sort anyway you prefer to set it up for. Your whole family and or Business employees individually. It comes with multiple software for you to be prolific at the skill you're using. Requires an internet connection for out of network use. You can be half way around the world and connect in an instant. I've connected from South Africa to the US just as you were sitting in your lazy boy. Set up must be by the manual, for errorless use. I have a 1250 GPB s router that makes use very fast. Keep it in an open space for good ventilation, and clean off the dust and your good to go. I've been using these drives for 10 years with no major issues that couldn't be resolved. I recommend purchasing more storage than you originally want. You find more and more to store. For long term storage, this is an excellent option.

More than just a NAS

Excellent data protection and access. Took me a bit to figure it out, but now I really like it. I'm using encryption on the entire RAID volume. Shares accessed from Win11, chromebook and Android. Media streaming is a nice bonus.

Perfect as a CACHE server

This personal cloud drive is the ideal solution for a device to act as a cache server for your main cloud drive. I use it to store movies I am going to watch in the near future so that there is zero buffering issues.

not safe : no antivirus and poor support

Once upon a time, there was an antivirus app (which does not exist anymore!!!) and it was useless : no antivirus definition was possible. WD solved the issue : they deleted the antivirus. What is a NAS without an antivirus ? Its total nonsense. Moreover, lot of bugs, very slow, poor/no support..... Product to avoid and in general all products are to avoid.

Don't buy

Don't buy this product! Since that time, my wifi router (with antivirus, and firewall) has been telling me that it has over 300 vulnerabilities, which I ignored since I was protected. I've had it for about a year, but over the past 3 months my local wifi router has been blocking attacks on the NAS. I wish I could disconnect from internet, but the only way to back up my phone is to use their app, which requires the NAS to connect to the internet. Apparently this requires that interface to work. WD, please update your product to allow this system to not have to rely on your servers, especially when you were hacked in May 2023!!! This is not cool.

This is absolute garbage. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It has shown a faulty drive 1, 3 times in row. I swap out the drive, it works for a few weeks then the same problem reoccurs.

Awful!

I have created an account and my password was not 'recognised' and now account blocked. I have a device which has lost it's network connection which I cannot connect any more. When I click the link for the device, the WD page says 'page not found'. For a company of this size, you need to get the basics right!

I am at a loss

I have the EX2 8G unit and it has been running for about 4 months. I recently got a notification that the system had upgraded -- about two weeks ago. I got a red LED on drive two. I tried to access the admin control panel, and the device failed with the IP address and failed with the name. I could access the data on the drive but could only connect in relay mode. Now after a 40 second reboot, I get an error that I have a cloud account, but it can't find the unit 4 months, it's a brick, boat anchor, good for nothing piece of plastic and metal. Zero stars if possible
