The WD PR4100's are a simple to use, plug and play, NAS, designed for non-technical users with a streamlined, minimal interface focused on basic file storage, backups, and remote access. They are the product of choice for those users who just need network storage, not advanced server features.. They are typically cheaper than similarly specced systems. The units can come with drives pre-installed, which simplifies purchasing and setup.

The PR4100 was purchased to resolve issues with my PLEX server. The server I was using could not always provide a stable playback of high resolution video. I thought that my issue was my WiFi was not stable enough to stream the large files to my TV. I upgraded my network and hardwired direct to my TV. I still had the same issue. So PLEX recommended the PR4100 I purchased with 32TB. I spent 48 hours transferring my video files onto the PR4100. The setup was pretty simple. I am now streaming to all TV's in my home as well as my phones and tablets. I'm looking to add another PR4100.

I had a NAS device by another vendor in our home office with seven computers. It had a flaw that caused it to constantly drop off our network, so I replaced it with this device and have had no problems. It currently provides me 40tb of storage for laptop and desktops backups, backup for over 70,000 tracks of digital music, and about 40,000 digital pictures we can access over ethernet to our 57" tv. I have used WD products for decades and never had a failure. As disk capacities have increased over the years, I accumulated about 20 drives that are 'retired' but I can't get myself to throw them away! This large capacity allows me to keep historic versions of my financial data. Recently in early November I had a data issue with financial records and was able to recover a backup copy from last January 3 because I had online storage for data. I do not use the RAID capability but instead keep multiple historic versions for flalback because I have the space. This device performs as well as my internal drives over ethernet cable.

Loved this product until the raid went down one night. We lost everything. what good is a raid 5 if you can't restore from a drive and instead the shared drive just shows 0 mb used. Now I will have to pay thousands to hopefully have the data restored.

Good NAS and OS with so much potential. But WD and their so called developers killing it. Its PC and MAC web OS5 version is a fully handicapped NAS version. Some third party applications WD included are Plex, Twonky, Acronics are exceptionally excellent. WD OS5 itself is reliable, available, simple and the NAS OS read full HDD bites claimed by the manufacturer. Unlike other NAS which reads available storage 20% less than the manufacturer claims. But unfortunately WD and its team still selling this years old NAS at premium price. No hardware upgrade, no first party app support. But its mobile application all in one excellent. The NAS is simple, more than sufficient and high speed for a normal home user requirements. WD OS5 only support MP-4 Video, once transcoded with Plex ( included with NAS), any video plays just in milliseconds with outstanding clarity. No lag. But WD looks outsourcing and not interested to upgrade its Hardware. A downgrade from OS3 to OS5.

Called to technical support, opened a ticket and after a few questions I was told to buy a new NAS enclosure and "perhaps" I can recover my data. I also Googled this and fond many cases of "death-by-auro-update." I trusted my data to WD no I am left to pick up whatever is left. On top of that WD has the PR4100 in back order. I am shopping for one and no one has one.

My existing PR4100 failed. I ordered a replacement from the WD store; they sat on my order for a week, then they cancelled my order saying they could not fulfill it (!!). So I ordered one from eBay, and when it came the front panel display did not work. I gave up and switched to a Synology unit.

The WD PR4100 has been an excellent fit for my home. Very reliable, quick. Aside from a little confusion setting up (a distant memory now), it's performance has been flawless. My PR4100 is configured with 4 x 8 TB using RAID5. RAID5 is a good solution for home.

I bought mine a year ago (with 2x16tb red), I use it mostly for streaming my content (plex). It's extremely easy to use with the web gui, has it's own apps like my cloud (used to sync all my devices),the 4gb ram is enough but still I upgraded it to 16gb. The only thing I wish would be better is the cpu, or at list have the option to replace it myself. Overall I love that product

If you want it for movies, look elsewhere! Can't put together good software anymore. OS 3 was stable for playing movies, but OS 5 is horrible! Stutters, freezes and crashes.

purchased for Plex did the update and broke my Plex setup. There is no way to reset to factory the Plex once installed you can not fully uninstall it 100% so doing so and re-installing Plex leaves you back in the position before to uninstalled it where there is no fully restored Plex so even when you try total reset of pr4100 its not deleting some data so you never get the initial Plex set up ever again so can not get out of this lock out from Plex.. worst ever support a maze of pages and forms and then they lose my registered info so I have to reregister the pr4100 to get support again. but support has never fixed the issue they tried to get me to download some dos style win doze programs when i'm on a Mac. this is not plug and play and its beyond a normal everyday user to get to work.

PR4100 Pro is a nice small sized NAS that's quiet and easy to setup. I set it up to be a backup device for my MAC's and created a Plex media server as well. So far I haven't been disappointed or had any issues. The only thing I I was surprised at was the installable software like Twonky is no longer supported because Twonky is no longer around.

I'm attempting to connect a couple of WD MyBook's to the external USB ports so I can backup the contents of the pr4100 to them. The pr4100 does not recognize them. It will recognize a little 32gb thumb drive, but I need terabytes for backup. I asked WD tech support if there is a maximum storage limit on the external USB drives, but so far no response.

Received product in good condition. I let it sit for 24 hours to let it come up to temperature. Live in Ohio and it was cold out. The directions for setting the unit it up were not exactly right, but I was able to figure it out. Yes I did read the download documents available. Found them to be very beneficial. Everything went well with setup until I attempted to upgrade the firmware. It would not happen. Finally, emailed support. Got a response right away stating they needed a support file from the product. I sent it right away. I did receive a response a day later with a link to the support site with multiple documents for me to self troubleshoot the issue. Spent 3 days troubleshooting, lost my weekend, and still did not resolve the issue, even after totally resetting everything to factory. Not a happy camper. Responded to support and asked to have my case escalated. Told them I felt as if I had just bought a new car and after getting it home, found it wouldn't start and all the dealership would do is send me links on how to troubleshoot the issue. That would not be acceptable and neither was the support I had received from WD. I got a response later that day that my case was escalated and that a team was working on the issue. A few days later, I received an actual solution to the issue. Within 30 minutes the issue was resolved. I would have rated the product 5 stars, except for the initial support I received.

Moved 4x10TB drives from my old EX4100 without a problem. Took the new PR4100 about a day to recreate the MyCloud links

I have found buying the 4 drives and installing them in the enclosure to be very fast and easy. Hard to get it wrong and it allows buying better quality drives at a much cheaper price than the bundled ones. The drive is extraordinarily stable and the RAID 5 configuration maximizes space. I have used the USB backup and PLEX apps and found them to be useful and work well. My next foray will be into the iTunes app which will definitely make access to my iTunes library simpler and not dependent on the app being open in the computer. Great media center

After about 6 years of use I had to replace my DL4100 because I encountered the Intel Atom C2000 bricking issue. I moved my 4 disks from the bricked DL4100 to the PR4100, said OK at the roaming raid prompt and my RAID 1 mirrors, data and configuration were intact. Very easy to migrate to the newer NAS using the same disks. I was thinking of upgrading to a newer unit; but this forced my hand. I would recommend the PR4100; if it last 6+ years I'll be even happier.

I've had a PR4100 32 TB for a few years. Rock solid. Once set up it's awesome. Not a hitch and we do get electrical issues where I live. No issues at all.

I've had my WD My Cloud for almost 4 years now. I upgraded the ram as soon as I got it, with the intention of running my Plex Server from it. It was easy to install Plex and get all my media folders uploaded and set up. I have had to replace one drive after a power failure, but the replace went exactly as a raided drive replace is supposed to go.

Worked fine until I did an update. After that it never booted up again. the only indication that it was on was the flashing blue power light. This went on for about four hours until i pressed the power button. The unit immediately shut off, Not a shutdown. To this day, the unit will not boot up. all 32TB's were lost. thank GOD I built a experimental OPEN MEDIA VAULT to play around with as a offsite back-up option. I backed-up my most critical data 14TB"s as a throughput test. That action alone saved my bacon. Don't trust these devices as a main storage unit. The OS is unfinished and rushed. Build your own OMV or freenas unit using WD drives.

This is the third WD NAS I have purchased. The first being an EX4, which I never felt was adequate, but it worked well enough over eight years ago. I then, four years later, purchased a PR4100 and relegated the EX4 to my backup to my PR4100. Well, the EX4 was no longer serviceable, and basically quit working, so I bought this PR4100 to replace the EX4. These PR 4100's work so much better than the EX4 ever did. And while I put off upgrading to WD OS-5 for as long as possible, to allow WD to work out the bugs, I did upgrade about six months ago, and it seems quite stable and user friendly. I keep little to no files on my computer, but run the primary NAS as my C Drive in RAID 10, and then do a synchronized back up that NAS onto a second NAS, also in RAID 10. My data isn't worth the storage devices I have on them, but there should be a slim chance that I should ever loose what I have using this arrangement. WD is THE BEST for helping resolve any problems I have ever had with any of these NAS units, and I use Red Drives in the bays, and knock on wood, they have held up great so far. I don't use PLEX or any other APPs other than my backup APP, so I cannot give you any information on that, but I do regularly use the remote APP on my iPhone/iPad, and OS-5 and the newest APP work quite well, with few failures to connect, which was very common on OS-3 with the older APP.

AS I said before my ex4 was upgraded to only work on the local network. Red light on and drive degraded. Ordered a replacement drive and went to install after recreating logins (a pain) and found that drive OK and EX4 rebuilding. You owe we me a harddrive which I have now as a spare. NO WHERE DOES THE UPGRADE SAY IT WILL CAUSE ALL THESE PROBLEMS. LOGINS MUST BE RECREATED. RED LIGHT ON DRIVE 1 COMES ON AND SYSTEM DEGRADED, Overall a bad update causing lots of trouble and yes I rebooted a couple of times and red light on drive 1 was on after about 3 minutes NOTE I AM RAGING ON THE EX4 UNIT AND NOT ON THE PR4100. THE GOOD THING IS ACRONIS FOR WD WORKS GREAT NO WAY I COULD FIND EX4 TO COMPLAIN ABOUT

Nice, big, quiet network storage for home
By Jeff G.
I use this mainly for file storage and backup -- it works great for that. I copied all my CDs and DVDs to the disks. The music streaming works fine over our home wireless network. I have not converted my DVDs to streaming format, so I access them as iso files. They work pretty well that way with infrequent, brief stalls due to wireless network latency. It just sits in the corner, not making any noise (except for fan noise during startup) waiting to be accessed by our computers. Overall...

Happy with the first, got a second
By Roger B.
This is my second PR4100. I have had a good experience with the first for the last 3 years so I purchased a second after looking at alternatives. WD was able to deliver in 4 days and I stuffed the NAS with 14TB drives run in a Raid 5 configuration. This second PR4100 is essentially a backup of the first. Both NAS systems contain plex media and backup of the family PC data. I have both systems on the same UPS and make use of the network UPS option. Syncing of the systems is done with Re...
