Great deal and real Pro performance

The 18 TB Red Pro is a great choice with reasonable competitive price and magnificent performance during write and read data. The overall performance of my NAS improved noticeably after upgrading with 4x 18 TB HDDs. Worth every dollar paid. Well Done western Digital

Failure Within 60 Days, Slow RMA Process

I bought the Red Pro based on reliability of previous WD Red drives that I purchased over eight years ago, which are still running strong in a separate NAS. Out of the 6 22TB drives I purchased for my new NAS, one failed within 60 days. I submitted an advance replacement RMA via WD a week ago, and even after paying $25 for that, $15 for shipping, and having a $185 hold placed on my Amex, I am beyond frustrated. I ended up having to buy another Red Pro 22TB from Newegg, as I cannot have extended downtime. Clean up your joke of an advance RMA process and QC process WD, we deserve better.

Arrived DOA

Purchased 2 new drives one was doa and would not format. In order to return I have to pay shipping and create my own label. Will never buy directly from the western digital store again. This is horrible service direct from the manufacturer. A return elsewhere would have been easy. I paid expedited shipping and got a bad drive now I have to PAY Again to get it shipped back and then they will send me a drive back ground service.

Buy from somewhere else

Tried to order during Black Friday. Order was confirmed and then cancelled by WD. This happened 20x over the BF weekend. WD Support was not helpful. The drive ended up being sold out. Bought from NewEgg instead.

DOA

Unfortunately, drive came dead on arrival. Support told me to return the drive after trying a few support steps. Was very disappointed that I could only return the drive for a refund or follow the warranty process for a refurbished replacement. I'm not spending full price for a NEW drive and then offered a refurbished as a replacement in day 1.

Advertised while stock last, ordered and guess what, not a one in stock so wanted me to pay a higher price. If not available, take your ad down or honor it.

Dead upon arrival

I have never been more disappointed in a company standing behind their product. I reached out to the service team because the drive arrived completely dead and didn't function. I literally was unable to turn the drive on for a single second. So as I reached out to support the best they continued to offer (to replace a NEW drive) was a recertified drive. The price of a brand new and recertified drives are not the same. I continued to push and push, for close to a week, until they finally realized I purchased it directly from them. The their tune changed to being able to send me a replacement brand new drive. Not standing behind your product when it arrives dead and trying to send me an unequal drive is an unacceptable practice. Fighting with a customer when I reach out regarding my new dead product was an insulting and frustrating experience.

So far so good - working in NAS, speeds as promised, hoping that it also going to be reliable like other WD Red Pro I used before.

I bought 2, but one of two was dead on arrival. The dead one sounds like monster. I have to wait couple of weeks for a change. And finally i got "REFURBISHED" one. Yeah.. It was not a good deal at all. I think i got scammed

I ordered two. One was DOA because of poor packing when shipped. The other was has not had any issues so far. It took an extra week to finally get the second one set up.

good drives and now great shipping

great drives! easy to install and setup. glad to see WD got their act together for shipping these. super well packed for shipping unlike 20tb ones got and had to send back as they were just put in a box not secured and bounced all over the place. these 22tb where packed great for the trip!

watch out - poor shipping and support policy

because my hard drives were packed so poorly for shipping, they were bounced all over the place and WD would not just resend a good set of HDD. the would only offer refurb. replacements. really, I bought brand new ones that all I did was opened the box they were bounced around in. that was it. really poor service. I had to send these back for a refund. too bad, I have always used wd drives. if this keeps up, may have to look at other brands for my needs. WD needs to get it's act together!

Not Like the ones you buy from Amazon or Best Buy.

The Drives are supposed to be exactly like the ones you buy from Amazon (per WD Customer support team). But the ones from Amazon and Best Buy will initialize when used and can be fornatted, But the ones from WD will not do that. Seems to me like they are missing something that the other units have and these are lacking. I think WD needs to address that. I had to return 4 18TB Red Pros purchased from WD website that were probably good but I could not get to initialize (even with the WD helpers).

Corrupted drive and no basic defects warranty

The drive was broken and cannot be mounted at all. I tried multiple methods (4 to be exact). Returns under 30 days from "ship date" is too short considering it takes a while to arrive, weekends count, bad timing, and it takes time to understand if it's one's fault in reading the drive and then figuring out how to start a return - the website was hard to navigate, good thing google saved the day. Maybe I shouldn't have bought 6 of them... Errors like these 2 show up many times [AFAIK, drive is corrupted]: [ 451.351071] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdd] tag#28 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_OK cmd_age=0s [ 451.351086] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdd] tag#28 Sense Key : Illegal Request [current] [ 451.351093] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdd] tag#28 Add. WD can no longer be trusted as a brand

Over the years I've come to trust WDRed Pro, after this purchase I'm now skeptical of all future purchases. I bought 2, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, 1 WORKED, 1 DID NOT. This caused me to read many other reviews here and I was shocked to see this has become a common thing in 2024. It looks like WD has taken a turn for the worst with their quality control. EVEN MORE INFURIATING... Their customer service was "apologetic" but also "powerless" to make it right quickly! A brand new drive bad out of the box, bought right from them, and they wouldn't immediately replace it for free, I either had to pay them a non refundable fee, or send it back and wait 8+ weeks for a replacement. Completely unacceptable.

Hit or miss on packing

First order was shipped with 2.5" hdd spaces and 1/2 the bubble pack as the second order. First order had one doa crossing my fingers on the second. Second order is perfect how it should be packaged for $420 per drive. End of story I have 3 HDD instead of two great returns tbought

Quiet and fast in my Synology NAS

I loaded up a bunch of competitor's 12TB drives in my Synology 1522+ NAS and used it for Apple Time Machine. At that time, I didn't understand that if I had a hot spare, I only needed to implement SHR and not SHR2 RAID, and I wasted an entire drive's worth of space. Fast forward and I found a cheap DX517 expansion module on an auction site, which I stocked with Western Digital 12TB WD Red drives. I stopped the SMB file services, moved the shared folder to the expansion module, re-formatted the base unit's drives, the moved them back. No errors and everything is now running again, letting me use the DX517 with the WD Red drives to hold my music and video libraries. Unlike the other brand of drives, the WD Red were verified and are running properly in a minimum of time with a minimum amount of fuss. Will buy again!

First drive DOA

The hard drive I received was dead on arrival. It spun up and seemed to be working fine, but it wasn't recognized by any device. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't an exchange process. I had to purchase a replacement and then return the original, which meant I was out a lot of money while waiting for the return to process. As for the drive itself, it's great. This is my 6th one so far, and I will continue to buy red/gold pros..
