I love this Wescot beauty dish, but only gave it 4 stars because they do not make it clear when it comes as part of the C-stand AD400 kit, it does not come with the beauty dish plate. That is an extra purchase item that is not mentioned in the discription.

This softbox does not come with the beauty dish attachment. It needs it to prevent hot spots. The beauty dish itself is tedious to attach. The flash bulb of an AD600 also does not go in all the way...

The deflector plate was what I needed. I am very disappointed with Westcott for not including this as part of their Rapid Box package. I did not expect it to be missing and intended to use my Rapid Box right away after unpacking. Delayed my photo shoot by a week. Good product otherwise. Dee Riley, Riley Photography

the deflector mainly spreads the light coming from flash, maximizing the output to make every millimeter of the silver interior useful. i love this product. But i would embrace an improvement, like they make it a magnet, easy in easy out. instead of screw in.

This is another fine example of a greedy company taking an otherwise decent product (the soft-box with a deflector inside) and subdividing it into parts, so they can gouge you for more money so you can purchase them all to make it work correctly.

I wish I got this system together earlier. This effectively creates a beauty dish that is very collapsable and portable. This disc fits at the bottom of the westcott bag for my 26" Rapid Box and you'd never know it was in there. The difference in light is astonishing though. Love it.

This seemingly small light modifier produces wonderful, soft light. It is easy to set up and comes with its own carrying bag. I would recommend this for any photographer.

The beauty dish reflector really makes the rapid boxes worthwhile. I love the light that it produces when matched with my octobox. Highly recommend picking one up if you have a rapid box.

Th Rapid Box together with the Deflector Plate make a great combination, and I use them all the time. The photo shown in this advertisement is incorrect as the Deflector Plate is mounted backwards. The concave surface faces front!

I love the Rapid Box system and if I'm lighting straight on with this dish deflector it's great light but the gap between the deflector and the box makes for some funny light shapes if I don't shoot at much of an angle to the camera. I think this design could use a little work yet.

This improves the performance of the 26 inch Rapid Box by eliminating the hot spot. It does this, however, at the expense of creating a cold spot in the middle. Some simple tests showed a smaller cold spot and more even light with the deflector plate installed with the convex side pointing toward the light, where as the "orange peal" milling suggests that it is designed to be installed with the concave side pointing to the light. With the plate in place, the unit delivers lovely soft light for portraits using the edge of the light. Used to illuminate larger areas the cold spot is clearly visible. I'd happily recommend this to a friend, but with the caveat noted above.

the deflector plate for rapid Box its just great. the deflector eliminates the usual hot spot and softens the light , the speed lights are hard lights but with the rapid box the speed light throws the light into deflector than bounce back on the back of the box, than reflects back through the front diffuser . I really love the quality of light I get with the soft box . But the deflector is the thing that makes the difference in the light quality and its well worth the investment. Highly recommended

Build quality - The build quality of this product is very good, the plate is of heavy gauge, the concave (inside dish) side is dimpled with an orange peel texture. The deflector plate also comes with a short extension rod to screw into the center rod of the beauty dish and a wide machine bolt with a thin head & slot for a straight blade screwdriver to tighten it down. The dish attaches very securely. The only complaint on the parts is that I would have liked the machine bolt to have had a thicker head with knurling (like a large thumb screw) so I can easily hand tighten it to the extension rod and thus not need a screwdriver for any reason. Also, if the machine bolt was permanently attached to the reflector dish somehow that made it impossible to fall out, then that would be one less small part for me to lose on the road. These are not huge issues by any means and not a reason to avoid a purchase in itself, just pointing out a suggested refinement. Usefulness - Here is where in my opinion the dish falls very short. Test setup with diffuser - I have done several tests with the 20" rapid box octa, both with and without the reflector dish, using a Nikon SB600 flash and my new favorite TTL triggers which are the Phottix Odin system. I tested by pointing the 20" octa at a white wall and taking images on my Nikon D7000 with a 35-70 2.8D lens at 35mm. This way I could see the light pattern emitted by the 20" octa on the wall. With the front white diffusion panel on the softbox for the first tests, I looked at the patterns on the wall with the speedlight set; A) with the built-in flip diffuser down B) 24mm zoom C) 50mm zoom D) 85mm zoom My conclusion is that the deflector plate is of very limited functional value. The focusing of light by the plate is similar to just adjusting your zoom head to the next tighter zoom setting. It seems that with the widest zoom setting on the speed light, the large metal block center of the umbrella sufficiently blocks enough light from the center hot spot area that this dish adds very little (if any) value. Test setup without diffuser - I tested similar to the with diffuser tests at 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm speed light zoom settings. In this case I found the dish actually created a large circular black hole to the light pattern. I even tried with the concave (inside dish) side facing out and facing in toward the speed light. With the dish facing out (subject side) the negative effect was less and with the concave side facing the speed light it was the worst, not only creating the black area in the center of the lighting but cutting out a high percentage of the light from making out of the box. Note that the 20" octa is best used with the wide angle flip diffuser on your flash flipped down for the most even light pattern to be emitted. Without the diffusion panel the more you zoom your speed light the more the center metal block and wires start to show like a strange cucoloris pattern. Summary - I have not tried this plate on the larger rapid box octa because I do not own one, but on the 20" unit I would not bother, because this outstanding octa does not need it. What Westcott really needs for the rapid box octa's is a grid capability much more than a deflector dish.

I wouldn't use my rapid boxes without the deflector in place to eliminate a hot spot in the middle

I really like the way this box sets up and down with little to no effort. It's extremely light as well. I think it's a great design but I think it needs an interior baffle. The single diffuser is nice because it's just one stop but I think the light is a bit too harsh even when you put it extremely close to the subject. Even with the metal deflector and outer diffuser it's still pretty hard. I almost sent it back until I set it up as a beauty dish and then fell in love with it. It makes a great beauty dish and it's a nice size one for portability. If you watch the Zach Gray video in the Westcott University and look close enough you can see that at the 5' he has the light at, it's pretty harsh. But that may be what you're looking for. I bought another name brand 24" square softbox at the same time and the light is much softer through it. It has an interior baffle and is a 2 stop loss. You also have the capability to use 2 flashes with it at the same time that can help with the 2 stop loss. In the end I decided to keep both of them and like them both but I have been using an interior baffle in the Rapid Box.

An essential addition to using any of the Rapid Box products. Works great to eliminate hot spots on the modifier--produces a nice, even light when working up close to your subject. Four stars because this really should be a part of the Rapid Box product and not an add-on.
