No where on or in the box are there instructions showing that the silver cap that fastens the black cover to the top of the umbrella is threaded. Intuitively, it appears that the cap snaps on and off. Of course, attempting to snap off the cap resulted in breaking the cheapo plastic threaded mount rendering it useless. All of this before actually using it! So, how did I find out how to remove the black cover? The instruction are buried in a 2014 YouTube video. C'mon man!

This is a fine combo for indoor use. These Westport Basics stands are exactly that — basic. I own 3 of them and while they’re still together, the fold joints wear out fairly quickly, resulting in wobbliness. They haven’t failed or fallen over, so that’s good. As for the umbrella, it’s decent. Not sure about the metal frame’s durability however. And the black cover is a pain to remove (and to tuck in while folding). I wouldn’t recommend you use this one outside. The umbrella is a good size and folds down to a tidy 14”.

Excellent product, excellent value for your investment. It's a light weight and easy to use versatile umbrella kit that does the job it's meant to do and does it well. Very well made. I use it on location shoots and in studio.

I have used the stand many times and it has worked just fine. It could be sturdier but for price combined with reasonable weight it is good value. I have only used the umbrella a few times and it has worked as expected.

Light, lite, use cloth sand bag with 5 lb weight to hold in light wind. Reliable.

This is exactly what you would expect. It's not overly heavy duty but for the small investment it is more than adequate for what many will use it for. I set this up outdoors on an uneven ground and it worked great. The mechanisms all function as expected and with a little care in treating it as you would with any equipment, it should last.

I have been using this product for portait and product photography. As a non pro and for home use, I find that these light weight, compact stands and umbrellas work great. From the first time I set them up, wich is a cinch, they really made a huge difference in my photos. I woulld recommend them to hobby or occasional users.

I use this with my Smith Victor light and my speedlights. Great diffuser setup for portraits etc.

My only gripe is that the tightening for the flash mount is round. It makes it hard to get a good tight on and if you get that good and tight its hard to loosen it. A lever style would have been much more user friendly!

Liked the aspect of buying a kit, but the umbrella would not stay open and kept coming apart. Will replace it with a sturdier model.

This is my first light modifier and I am definitely hooked. This kit is very easy to use and should be the first stop for anyone moving the camera of flash with a modifier. I am definitely looking forward to adding more Westcott products to my bag as I progress.

I bought this umbrella kit for studio photography. It was a wise investment. In fact, I'm about to purchase 2 more. Very easy to use, adjustable, durable and lightweight and it softens light beautifully!

I was actually surprised at the solid shaft of the umbrella. I wished though that removing the black panel was easier; I thought I'd rip the underlying white panel while twisting the screw on top of the umbrella. Also the locking mechanism for the umbrella adapter should be improved. I'll probably try the Manfrotto adapters since it seems easier to tighten/loosen the umbrella with a screw handle which this one did not have; just a plain screw which was hard on the hands.

for my uses as an enthusiast, with a low level of demand on the equipment, it's perfect. for someone who is using it repeatedly and often, it might not last very long...especially if frequently removing and replacing the black cover...

As a learning enthusiast, this gear is just what I needed to bounce flash various lights and flashes. I am using nikon flashes in iTTL mode with comander/remote settings. Might consider a few pocket wizards too, to complement the set, especially when working outside or harsh lighting conditions.

Good starter kit, but I can tell the umbrellas aren't going to last very long. Best suggestion would be to make a better storage sleeve for the umbrella. Almost impossible to wrap-back up. Stands are great.

Great light kit for the enthusiast - I would not recommend for a professional that may use it a lot. I don't think it would hold up to the demands of a pro. Otherwise it is a great product for the money.
