Questions & Answers

Bernardo M : Does this fit only the westcott umbrellas or does it wrap around like most sock diffusers?MONROE B : It will fit any umbrella similarly sized from any brand.
John R : Is this better w/ the silver or white umbrella? Do you get similar results w/ silver / white with this? I'd assume the silver version of the umbrella would give a bit more power but same color/softness? -ThxPeggy B : It's just going to be different. The cost of the umbrellas is so low that one could easily own one of each - silver and white. If by "power", you mean "more reflective - yes, of course. I can't disagree with the advice of getting the silver first - and then the white. But, again, these are inexpensive umbrellas, so it's affordable to own both.BEVERLY B : Being as this is a diffuser it will defuse any light, softening up the already soft light that the white or silver umbrella puts out. Making any umbrella this is used on a softbox. For me I used it on white, worked beautifully.SCOTT T : Go with the silver. More efficient... Plus you'll have more options.... without diffuser, you'll have a crisper light, and the ability to soften up with the diffuser. Plus, I can't remember who, another famous photographer recommended the Silver with Diffuser too. Using the combo personally, if give an incredibly soft light (Silver/Diffusion). If you use it with a speed light, you'll be amazed how little flash power you'll need to fill the umbrella up. Good Luck.TERRY H : John, I did not keep this long enough to be able to give you an answer. The reason I returned it (and my advice to you) is that - 7' is a really large umbrella. I too was looking for softer light, but this thing was really unmanageable, not to mention the weight. Better get a really strong stand.probably 2-3 times the rated weight!
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?GINO G : To help defuse the lightCameron G : Always want a diffuser just to make sure the lighting is correct on my subjectGLENN U : This will fit the 7' parabolic umbrella I just purchased.RICKY C : For my 7' parabolic umbrellaDONOVAN Y : same as aboveJEAN HUGUES D : I like the results I see on the video: Large Softbox in a Small Home Studio | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey". I really love it.CORNELL M : Purchased to compliment the 7' Westcott UmbrellaCINDY H : Needed diffusion.VICKI P : Because it works.WESLEY A : Goes with umbrellaHARJANTO S : Because I have a 7-foot Westcott umbrellaTHOMAS M : to fit an umbrella I already bought from Adorama, to expand the range of lighting effects with minimal increase in gear to carry.YAW N : neededJARED H : For the 7’ umbrellaMIDORI W : Recommend by Sandra Coan in her awesome lighting class-- to get diffused, natural-looking light.ROCKY T : Creates beautiful light.RUBY S : Diffuses light beautifully.WILFREDO M : Good reviews onlineJAMES S : needed to make the light even softer coming out of the umberllaEVAN D : It’s really big!STEVENS S : Saw YouTube vids on how this can help you with different lighting techniques.nouf a : I need it because it’s very usefullAMANI B : For my umbrella 7' to get got shoots for newborn photographyMONIQUE M : The reviews and online research.PAMELA G : Research suggested also purchasing the diffuser for more use of large umbrella.PATRICK K : recommendations from other photographersROSE B : Want some diffusion of lightJEN G : to work in the Parabolic Umbrella

Light, easy to install durable.

Well made, definitely not the cheap material from others. It is still plastic so creases will never leave if you open and fold back down every time, so if that bothers you maybe get cloth. It's light and easy to install.

Great diffuser for Westcott 7' parabolic umbrella

Westcott 4631D Umbrella Diffuser for Parabolic Umbrella is an essential part of the setup if you are looking for more soft, defused light. I used it on my 7' Westcott umbrella (white) for headshots and couldn't be happier with the results. The only thing I wish was added to the package is a pouch to keep the diffuser in to prevent it from getting dirty when in storage or transfer.

Nice panel, durable

This is a very nice panel that is well-made and well-fitted to the umbrella - reasonably priced. Great way to get an inexpensive large "soft box" setup.

Great Diffuser for a great umbrella

This is my go-to Large umbrella for a lot of my lighting setups. Its very versatile, I use it for portraits to recreate window light and also for a lot of product photography as well. Its portable, light weight, and looks amazingly different with this diffuser.

A low budget answer to some hi end results

If you are looking for something to control the spectral highlights and create a softer look here is a simple solution to a major issue. Does amazing work.

Very effective

I use in conjunction w/ Westcott's 7' silver parabolic, which is quite punchy. This diffuser really knocks down the specularity of the umbrella and creates very soft light. A must-have adjunct to this light shaper.

a bit large

i found the fabric is not the one on the picture, i seems a little generic for me, also, its like it is for a bigger umbrella because it doesnt fit very tight, its not too big, but still makes that impresion once you have set up. one more thing, i feel the one time i have used it, it makes a hot spot on the centre of it when lightning my

New Favorite Light Modifier

I have used a 5ft octobox for many years but the set up time can take several minutes. I have use my 7ft Westcott umbrella on many occasions but pairing it with the westcott diffuser provide a wonderful soft BIG light and the set up time takes only seconds. Now they just need to create a soft grid that I could uses well. The cost of the umbrella and the diffuser are so inexpensive that it is a no brainer! great job Westcott!

Fits well

This is a simple device, but it has to fit properly to be useful, and it does just that. Some tips, place the diffuser over your mounted strobe first so the light stand column and strobe stick through the hole in the diffuser. Then mount the umbrella followed by fitting the diffuser to the umbrella, rotating as needed. It is easier than trying to put the diffuser on the umbrella first, especially by yourself, and helps keep the diffuser and umbrella off the floor/ground keeping them clean. For speed lights it can be better to mount the lights directly to the umbrella shaft rather than to the light stand swivel mount. This works well with the triple speed light mounts with the speed lights going between the umbrella and the swivel mount. Add a small counterweight on the far end of the umbrella shaft. Use a heavy duty metal swivel mount as this modifier is too heavy and large for plastic mounts. Some strobe mounts are too flimsy for this umbrella in which case the strobe is hung from the umbrella shaft and the shaft attached to the light stand with a separate heavy duty metal swivel mount. Forget outdoor use unless zero wind and with an assistant to guard/hold the umbrella/light stand. Sandbagging the stand will not be enough even in a light breeze.

Inexpensive way to create a huge softbox

This set up gives you the quality of a huge soft box at much less cost. Though designed for the Westcott 7' umbrellas, it also fits perfectly on my generic brand 6' umbrella. I'm using it with a silver umbrella to photograph group portraits, as well as full-length portraits of brides, etc. where I need broad, soft and even coverage over the whole frame. With the silver umbrella it gives more contrast than a white or translucent while still being soft. Like the description says, it functions like an Octabank at a fraction of the cost. As a professional photographer, I've used Westcott products for decades, and this is absolutely professional quality.

Westcott Umbrella

I invested in the Westcott Diffusion Panel to get the professional large soft octabox look and the price of this item fit into my budget. I have used the product in an immediate shoot once I received it and I was very happy with the quality of light produced.
