Excellent light source for speed light applications. I use (2) speed lights inside this Apollo Orb & get excellent results include using it outside.

I've used the Apollo twice now and it's done well. It gives defined, controlled light and hasn't broken yet. It is difficult to manage in any kind of wind, so either have good sandbags or a friend to hold it outdoors in any kind of wind. It's too big for running around doing street portraits, but suitable for situations where you aren't moving much. I was able to cover the full height of a person from about 5 feet away with good soft light.

The Westport Apollo Orb is one of the best purchases I've made for on location portrait work. The soft light is fantastic and it's perfect for putting 3 Canon 600ex-rts in. With the RT I have control over the power of the flashes even though I cannot access them. I would strongly recommend that someone interested in this have a RadioTransmission flash (like the Phottix Mitros or Canon RT) since you cannot easily get to the flashes to change power. The build quality is what I'd expect from Westcott. It's good but not the best. It's very portable since it is light weight and breaks down very small. I would definitely highly recommend it to others.

BEAUTIFUL PIECE of gear! It's light and easy – and quick – to set up. Flash can be mounted on the brass stud -OR- two or three flashes can be mounted on a three-bracket (sold separately). One needs only ONE remote wireless to trigger all flashes (one, two or three) on the three-bracket. Numerous other valuable traits that are clearly visible to skilled photographers. Two Thumbs Up!

Great product for the photographer on the runner. I have been using my old orb for almost 3 years and have finally wore it out. When I saw the opportunity to purchase a new one with the egg crate included I jumped at the chance. The product is working just as good as my last one and I have not regretted my decision for one second

I have primarily used umbrellas, so to use this was a dream. Not that I don't love my umbrellas, but you have a lot more directional control. Also the option of using the diffusion panel or the grid is a dream. When you don't mind an umbrella influencing the background of you picture use it. When you want the light to behave this is the trick you want up your sleeve. I used it on a shoot the other day to test it out and all I can say is wow! For the price and the quality you really can't complain. Also it folds down nicely but I will never be like an umbrella. Also with the grid you will have to make sure you keep tabs on your gear. This is something you do not want to leave behind. With the latest sale on Adorama this is a steal!

This product can be used with basically any light you own; t can be with a strobe, a speedlite or any other light. I personally use it with a Quantum Flash but sometimes I use it with my speed lights. Either way it works great. This is a must have modifier. But it!

Excellent softbox for those using speedlights. The included grid in the price package makes the price excellent. The reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5, is that it is nearly impossible to get the grid folded and back into the little bag they provide - would be nicer to have a slightly larger bag provided.

If you try to place it 45 deg it will open from the bottom letting light spill. The design is to light at 90 deg only. The bottom of the umbrella extension broke at the first use

This is a great modifier! I've used it for couples portraits, a fashion show make ready, and the fashion show. Great soft light, easy to use and set-up/takedown is a breeze. The 43 inch size and diffusers really add value.

First off I would like to say I love the light quality this puts out but I am not a fan of the actual device. The build of it does seem very cheap and I will be taking a lot of extra care while using them. Yes there is a lot of negative about this but I do recommend it because of the quality of the light it puts out. The orb loses it shape a bit when you put on the egg crate grid on it. It is a pain as you have to take off the front diffusion to adjust your flash setting or you have to reached your hand up from the bottom and hopefully you know where all your buttons and settings are on your flash so you can adjust it by feel. Forget about getting this light at any kind of downward angle. You can move it just a little bit and then you are already hitting the bottom of the zipper track. When you have a little angle on it one of the zippers will be completely open so it is not completely sealed. Not sure how much this affects the light coming out of the orb but it is definitely not sealed. Don't forget to buy the flash attachment when ordering this.

Great soft light for portraits. The orb is quick and easy to set up. Access to your flash is through the front velcro attached diffuser panel. It is a little time consuming to pull the diffuser away to make adjustments on your flash unit, but not as much of an issue as I thought it would be. I also purchased the triple shoe mount bracket that holds 1-3 flash units. I haven't tried using multiple flashes with the orb yet but anticipated using HSS and so will add a second light to speed the recycle time. The included grid certainly helps to direct the light and reduce spill. The grid is fairly heavy so the orb sags (distorts) a little when it's attached. For those super critical of the shape of the catch light that may be an issue. Overall, this modifier, with included grid, is a great value for the price.

Westcott has enhanced the already popular Apollo product line by building the frame with fiberglass ribs. The fiberglass ribs provides added durability for those on-location situations and windy days!
The Apollo Orb is the first octagonal softbox that doesn't require an adapter ring. Simply open like an umbrella, place the light inside and attach the included diffusion panel.
Designed specifically with a deeper profile, light is evenly projected for maximum output while simulating a round catch light in the eyes. Diffusion panel can be recessed for even more directional control and to prevent lens flare.
Dimensions: 43.5" x 25" (110.5cm x 63.5cm)
Folded Dimensions: 3.5" x 35" (8.89cm x 90.17cm)

Westcott 40-Degree Egg Crate Grid for 43" Apollo Orb
Grids are made up of cells that control off axis light in four directions while maintaining the soft quality inherent in a large light source. They allow you to create separation and depth such as a hair light where you want to control just the light going onto the hair in order to separate it from the background. As light is focused into a forward direction through use of a grid, it can help to eliminate spill light or lens flare.
The off axis portion of the light is controlled by the cell size. The cell size (measured in degrees) describes the maximum cutoff angle of the off axis light. A 40-degree grid is the most popular degree used. Light loss at the center axis is minimal at a distance 3 to 4 times the diagonal dimension of the light source. On most models it is less than a 1/4 a stop of light.
Apollo Grids are soft and collapse down for easy transport and travel. Each unit comes with an included nylon carry case.
Grids easily attach through the use of hook and loop tape. When attaching, place your diffusion panel about 1/2 way in on the hook tape. This will leave enough room for the egg crate to attach directly in front of the diffusion panel. Grid corners are left unattached in order to provide the perfect fit. This allows you to stretch the grid taut and avoid sagging or drooping.
