Questions & Answers

Gregg N : Can someone explain the photo with the speedlite? There seems to be a shaft coming through the Orb zipper slot for the speedlite but it doesn't continue below the Orb. How is the light stand in back supporting the Orb?ANGEL D : Hi, my way is to put the speedlight against the back part of the Apollo, in order to get a reflected light going out the Orb to the subject. If u dont close well the zippers maybe u can loose an amount of light source. The other way is changing the light direction of the speedligth shooting it against the front of the Apollo. RegardsTIMOTHY R : The orb is always supported by an umbrella adapter on a light stand. It works just like an umbrella except that it is enclosed like a soft box.DEAN L : The photo is very misleading. There is no offset in the stand. The stand runs strait up through the hole in the bottom of the Orb were the Orb attaches to the stand using an umbrella shaft.DARYL V : It is like an umbrella. You have to buy something like this http://www.adorama.com/PTSMA1000.htmlDUC N : The apollo series design is actually pretty ingenious. Both the speed light needs to be mounted to an umbrella bracket. The apollo is essentially an umbrella with a slit on one side. You seat the apollo by enveloping the light stand, umbrella bracket, and speed light through the slit. Once everything is "inside" the apollo, you insert the apollo's umbrella shaft into the umbrella bracket. There is nothing attached to the "back" of the apollo, the connection is in the middle. It may be easier to check out a youtube video to see it in action. Also, as a note, you'll want to be able to trigger via radio or sync cable since the entire speed light is enveloped inside and probably won't see an IR signal from your master. I have several apollo products and love them. Good luck!
Shopper : I only have a couple NIkon speedlights with the CLS. Will it work through this? or will I need a radio/wired trigger? Or can the CLS fire through this?JOEL H : I use pocket wizards myself and have not actually tried it with cls only. FREDERICK N : I'm not sure I'm a Canon user myself and I aways use wireless triggers with my flashes and Strobes. Sorry I could not be of more help. It's a very thin material so it might but being that CLS is not a radio signal I can't say for sure.JUAN V : Your speedlight goes in side of this unit so yes, you will need a radio trigger or a cord that will attach the speedlight to your camera.ALAN F : A Nikon speedlight will not work with this product without a radio or wired trigger. The Nikon CLS depends on line-of-sight for the infrared signal to trigger the flash. I bought this but sent it back because it literally broke the first time I used it. I then purchased a Lastolite EZYBox II and absolutely love it! With it you can also use the CLS infrared system without totally requiring radio or wired triggers, but it would certainly work more flexibly with a pocket wizard.ALEJANDRO C : No they will work u just have to position them in the right way and u will be fine just be within distance and u will be fine reed your manual to see how far your radius is DARYL V : I used two of these with the Canon speedlights and they worked as long as the master flash could "see" the slave speedlights in the Orb.NIALL C : I'd suggest using a radio trigger (PocketWizard, etc.). The flash is enclosed within the unit so would likely encounter issues with Nikon CLS.TIMOTHY R : Not sure what CLS is because I shoot Canon but optical slave won't work. You'll probably want radios.BRANDON D : I use canon speedlites. The master will trigger the slaves through the covering. PIETRO A : I believe the Nikon CLS needs a line of sight, in this particular item the speedlight is enveloped inside the umbrella... Hard to say without trying but I guess it would struggle. I fire my Canon speedlites with Pocket Wizards
JIMMY A : Does this come with lightstand and speedlight bracket?PATRICK S : YesLAZZAT V : Yes, it does, it is too light though, need some sandbags to hold them still outside.ALFREDO R : Yes, the bracket is simple and strong, the stand is light weight and really functional.DEAN L : Yes it does.

Wonderful Product

I am very impressed with the performance of this softbox. It was very simple to set up and use. It gives a soft and beautiful light. I know it was constructed to use Speedlights but I feel it wouldn't be too big of a stretch to be able to use it with monolights or constant lights if one watched how much heat was generated by either. The four zipper bottom could accommodate another type of light easily. So far I've only used it with one Speedlight as the light source but I hope to change that in the near future. I used a Canon 430 EXIII RT Speedlight with my Canon 7D Mk II Camera. I set it up using the pop-up flash on the Camera as the trigger for the Speedlight and I had the diffuser installed on the Apollo Softbox and had no problem with the flash firing. I am excited about the possibilities of how I can use this softbox. I love the idea that I can take studio quality light to a spot with on electricity.

It's aight

It does exactly what it's supposed to. it does not have an inner diffusion panel so that kind of sucks but over all it does what it says it does. I thought I would be okay with how it mounts to a stand but I don't like it. it's range of motion forward and backwards is pretty limited so that is very unfortunate. If you are okay with it's limited range of motion it does give off very desirable light

Very reliable and productive quick fix for pro's superb for hobbyist and beginners

Just like the tittle explains! If you want to travel light here is a good tool! The light comes out even and gorgeous, great materials. Only one issue but not big, if you try to get more than 23* angles facing down, then you got some issues, but not big. Because of that I come to believe it was designed to be used as a straight light source. Buy it you'll love the result for just a few bucks!

New to OCF

So I finally am doing more OCF and took out my Apollo which I've had for a couple of years now. It's great...I use it now with my Vivitar flash.

Good Value for the Price

I purchased two of these for on location portrait shoots I was asked to do. I have other light modifiers but I wanted something large enough but light and compact, easy to set up. This product satisfies these. It takes just a few minutes to put it together. I use this with Canon 600EX-RT and provides enough soft and diffused lights for what I needed. Only issue I have with this, i.e. the reason for the four stars not five, is the stand. Not that it is a bad stand but it is a bit tight and maybe a bit too small for this modifier. Also, with this setting, you can't tile the light more than 5 degrees (I am guessing the number) so you can't use this from high angle. I recommend that you use a sturdier c-stand if you need to give the light more angle. Again, it is not fancy but I think this will provide more than adequate light modifications with easy set up.

Such soft light!

The orb itself is a good size light source. For my kind of work I will always put multiple speedlights inside of this for optimal light. Although it is flimsy, I don't worry about the ribs because of the fiberglass. The outer shell is rip stop and seems pretty durable. The lightstand that comes with is pretty small and I will not use it with this orb, I will most likely leave it at home or if I'm in a pinch pop a single speedlight with a grid or rogue modifier on it and use it as a kicker. All in all I am happy with my purchase and very pleased with the light this orb produces!

Love the Lighting, could be better built

Pros: - The shape of the orb and umbrella-like setup is great. Puts a nice catch light in the eyes and is easy to adjust. - Easy to mount speedlight and setup. Cons: - The light stand that ships with it is nothing to write home about, not air damped and a little flimsy. The quality of the stand is only fair. The price differential of the kit vs the Orb alone is minimal. Now I know why. - I would prefer the diffuser attached some other way than with velco. After the first use, some of the velcro came unstitched from the orb and the diffuser. Had to have my wife re-sew it. Wescott needs to improve their QC. - Wish it had more downward title angle available, but the forward zipper prevents that. Summary: The light produced by the Orb is very nice. Buy the kit, repurpose their stand for some other menial task you have; get a good quality stand; and be prepared to have the velcro sewing reenforced before you start to use it.

New Speedlight Photographer

As a mostly natural light photographer, I'm new to using speedlights for some extra spunk, but I like my lights to be soft. In comparing the Orb with a a shoot-through or simple reflective umbrella, the Orb produced much softer results. Because of its size and double layers of diffusion, it spreads and wraps around the subject nicely. I have only used it on a single subject with one speedlight, however, and I anticipate needing to use more speedlights in the orb for more people.

Not Sturdy Enough

I read high ratings on this. What I didn't like was the build quality. The softbox cover attaches with velcro along the inside of the softbox itself. As such, it takes some time to get it put on in each of the different sections of it. It was deep, and took a lot of space. I did end up returning it and buying a competitive product which allowed you to pull the softbox cover over the outer edges. I find that I can get this on more quickly and easily than this one. My intended use was for quick set-ups at many different locations.

Lightweight, works well

Very lightweight, bought a microphone stand bag at a music store for $12 and have a great case to take both of them in. There was some confusion with my purchase because I thought the special was for 2 as a pair, not per unit. Bottom line, they work and are nice and big

I would buy this product again and again

This Apollo is excellent for portrait photography specially if you are looking for a lightweight box for location. When using it at first I started with one flash I found the need of two and three flashes due to the size of the box and my taste.

Is just Awesome!!!!

This Orb is Great!!! Is portable and is soft but it comes with a price, the light stand is not air cushioned and the fabric is not perfect quality. After all Is just amazing and totally worth it! And is really portable and easy to mount.

Great item

easy to transport (wish it there was a carry case available); easy/quick setup; great diffusion of light; nice wrap around lighting; could use larger slit to allow more tilting of the orb. Highly recommend for site/location work.

Not what I expected

Not what I expected. The online description says 36" Apollo Orb. Now that it is delivered, the box says it is a 43" Apollo Orb. This is too big for my needs. I needed something that can fit into my suitcase for an out of town photo workshop. Upon opening the soft box for the first time, the stitching broke holding the frame to the fabric in two places. I have not even used it yet.
