Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this powerful enough to work in tandem with strobes at their lowest power settings?PIETRO A : Not in my experience: this light works well in very dim ambient light as an accent or contouring light. Be prepared to use slow shutter speeds or high ISO and wide aperturesART U : No. Your strobe will over power the ice light even at its lowest setting. Ice light will give you about 2.8 at 2500 ISO.JACKIE L : You can certainly use it at a fill llght, or even a separation light on the hair or shoulders.MARK F : The Ice light is not very bright and is best used for "on the fly" portable constant lighting. Stobes will work if far enough away and at low power settings.
Shopper : Is this powerful enough to be used in tandem with strobes on their lowest setting?REINA H : Definitely not strong enough to use with strobes. It works with natural / low light well.KRISTY T : Yes. Just as a bit of filler. It does go up quite high. But will of course still be ambient light. If the strobe is very low you will still catch it. I have found a billion uses for this thing!! It is one of my favorite pieces of equipment.RYAN W : Yes, you we will often times combine strobes with our ice lights in studio and on locationTESSIE R : Yes, they are. You can control the intensity of the light on this item as well.
PAUL W : So, the battery problem has been "fixed," yet it only holds a charge for a week? A Lithium battery with no drain on it should hold a charge for many months. So, if it only holds a charge for a week, it begs the question: "What is draining the battery while the unit is turned off?"VINCENT T : Wescott recalled the first batched and fixed the problem free of charge. Mines works fine now.BOB M : What does it matter? Simply charge it up before you need it. Mine holds a charge for weeks when I'm not using it and hours when I am.JACKIE L : My charge has held for 2 months so far.NATHAN D : Does it really matter? Charge it before you need it. It is an awesome on the spot light source that is extremely easy to use. I use it for most weddings I do.

Great Product for Wedding Photographer

Just used the Ice Light for the first time at a wedding. Great for detail photos in a dark room without needing to set up OCF. Made taking this photos much quicker - especially with an assistant to hold the light. This light puts out a lot of power and the dimming function comes in very handy.

A shining example of a handheld LED

I was fortunate enough to use this at the Edwardian Ball 2014 at the La Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. As I often find myself shooting in night clubs, one of the major hassles is lighting - club lighting is usually too low or inconsistent to shoot in, and using a flash comes off as disruptive. The Ice Light provided a nice simple solution. With its case making it easy to carry either slung over the shoulder or strapped to the belt, the Ice Light was always readily on hand to shoot with. Starting the light low and facing away from the subject allowed them a moment for their eyes to adjust (a major plus over using a flash) and being handheld I could control the direction of the light far better than a flash. The output on my unit was consistent and didn't have too much of a color shift (as LEDs often shift blue, in my experience). The start up time was reasonably quick - under 2 seconds by my estimate, and I could raise the light and snap a photo quickly and return the light to its case. All in all, the Ice Light is easy to carry around, super easy to use, and provides a great lighting solution, especially in situations like shooting in bars or clubs. The only cons that I can think of are: a.) the high price tag is a bit much to stomach b.) the dimming capability is minimal - even at different output settings it was hard to notice a significant difference in how much the light was dimmed. Aside from those two points, I'd recommend the Ice Light to photographers looking for a easy-to-use, portable lighting solution.

Great for Baby pictures!

I have 2 new grand babies and have found the Ice Light to be the perfect lighting option. An assistant can hold the light to illuminate baby and mom. You can see the lighting pattern and make adjustments on the fly. I have also had fun putting one or two on stands to light the toddlers play area and then shooting away as the little people demonstrate their super cuteness. The babies are not startled by flash and, since you do not have to wait for flash recycle, you can shoot on continuous high to catch the best expressions. The Ice Light is also perfect for video lighting.

Welcome to the new world of lighting

I have used flash's for years with the new led lighting and DSLRs time is changing. I like the versatility that the ice light brings . Last night I shot some portraits using natural light and the ice light they came out beautiful . My son keeps borrowing it for his film and video work and it's hard to get him to give it back.

Window Light in a Tube

Had a chance to use this product in a studio photo shoot. It is like bringing window light into your shoot. Very nice affect for Portraits. The reason for four stars is the price. A tad higher than it should be. I'll wait for the price to come down.

Great Idea, great looking product

Would love to own and use a couple of these... but the price tag is too steep for what it actually is. Don't assume that just because it was designed by a photographer that you can extract that kind of money on a whim. Too pricy! Not enough of a need for it to warrant putting out nearly ($)

So far so good

We purchased the Ice Light for it's portability and for its use in areas where we cannot bring a light kit or have sufficient light for a reflector. So far we have used it a handful of times and we are very impressed. This was not meant to replace our studio lighting, yet with the right budget and accessories we probably can, but for its portability it's an excellent product. I would consider purchasing a second or third light for my team next year if we continue to enjoy working with this light throughout the rest of 2013.

Ice Light

The ease of use when you need a little pop of light makes this a great lighting tool.
