Questions & Answers

Vicki B : Besides being slightly less expensive and slightly smaller/lighter, are there any other advantages to using this sidemount head versus the Whinberly II? I primarily will use it for photographing birds. I currently use a Nikon 7000 with a 300f/4 lens and teleconverter but want this head to work well if I add a larger camera body and/or lens in the future.KW M : sorry, can't help you...try arthur morris website. He's got answers to Everything!JOSIE W : Vicki B, I was told by one of my instructors that if I was only going to use the smaller lens ie less than 400mm then the sidemont was sufficient but to get the Wimberly II if i planned to get a larger lens sometime. Hope that helps.STEVE S : Hi Vicki... In response to your question... I have the Wimberley 200 Gimbal mount. I choose that over the side mount for two reasons. One, I like the orientation of the gimbal mount better and secondly it has a slightly better load capacity. Your current camera and lens set up will work with either mount, but if in the future you decide on a larger lens then you might prefer the gimbal mount. Another consideration is if you use the mount with a smaller lens that does not have a mounting bracket on it, then you camera will be in the vertical position. One last thought to help you with your decision. The gimbal mount is also a little heavier than the side mount which may be a consideration if you are carrying it long distances for your shots. I over came this by getting a graphite tripod to mount the head on. All in all, I am very happy with my set up and no matter which mount you choose, I know you will be happy with the Wimberley product. Good luck and happy shooting SteveOKLAHOMA I : Vicky If you think there is a possibility that in the future you might go to a much larger lense, ( I have a 600mm Nikon) and depending on the subject I use a 7000 or a D3, Iam glad for the stability. Spend the extra if you can, down the road it will pay off. Wimberley is the pros choice.Mary R : Get the Wimberley II you will love it.STEVE S : I actually use the Wimberley II and love it. I think that the side mount's primary advantage is that it is lighter. The mount I use with the tripod and a canon 500 with full size body is very heavy. How ever you go I hope you have good luck and get some great shots.WARREN S : If you are not going to use an off-camera flash the 200-S should be fine. I prefer the 200 (version II) for a couple of reasons. The first being that I think it is easier to mount the camera/lens setup as the platform lets the unit rest safely as you tighten the plate screw. I shoot a 400 f2.8 and I'd need a third hand to mount the beast on 200-S. Less clumsy I believe. Secondly, I like to use a flash when reaching into a nest or shooting in other low light conditions. I prefer the flash to be further above the sensor (film-plane for the old school) to get a bit of modeling. If you are looking to keep costs down and you have a good ball-head, check out the SK-100, The Sidekick. Just a thought. Same problem with a flash, but the unit is light and compact. You can also change a 200-S into a 200 easily enough. It's really a nice, versatile system. If I were in your situation I would go with the 200-S as your current lens/camera combination is fairly light. If you go to bigger glass at a later date you can always add the "swing arm."DONALD W : The full version supports the lens/camera on the bottom of the arc rather on the top. Therefore it can support more weight and is easier to take the heavey lens on and off. We have the nikon 500mm at about 9 lbs.MATTHEW M : Vicki, I have been using this head for a couple of years with a Canon 7D and 100-400 lens. It works great! You can use it on either side, left or right, and it is very sturdy. The main thing is, if you eventually get a larger camera/lens, make sure to get a tripod that will support the camera and lens. This head certainly will. When I stepped up to a 500mm F4 lens I got the full size Wimberly and a very heavy duty tripod, but I tried the lens with my sidekick and it also worked great. It really is a great head. I hope this helps you! Good luck! MattDAVID P : Vicki I use the Wimberley with a Canon 5d mark iii and a 400 mm 1.8 sometimes with a 1.5 and sometimes with a 2.0 converter. I mostly shoot birds as well and I would not want anything lighter. My lens weighs about 15 pounds minus camera so robust is very important to me. I have no experience with the side mount but would not be comfortable with anything any lighter than what I have. Dave PowersDANIEL M : The Wimberly II allows for vertical adjustment of the camera/lens. For heavier gear, that adjustment is fairly important in order to get just the right balance with little to no effort required to move the mounted lens. If you find the center of gravity too high or low with this head, there's nothing you can do about it. That said, I love it for a 70-200 f/2.8 or similar weight lens on a large SLR body.

LOVE the Wimberley Sidemount Head (WH-200-S)

Purchased for an interest in photographing Birds in Flight (BIF). Quality Product. Easy to set up and use. Many reviews recommend installing the lens to the Arca-Swiss Bracket and then mounting the camera. I would agree if small in stature or using 300mm + lenses. Pay attention and apply plenty of pressure to the mounting bracket and plates. My plate tried to twist but was stopped by the designed end of the arca-swiss style plate. Go ahead and apply good pressure on the camera plate. If I were to purchase a longer lens, I would add the standard gimbal bracket (approx. $150-175). I have used three or four times. A pleasure to use.

Lives up to its reputation

Everyone recommended this head for my Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS II USM lens. This was my first major lens and I purchased it for capturing birds in flight. It is amazing how well this head pans and how smooth. It is simple to balance the lens and camera and I marked the balance point with pencil on the lens plate. You can very smoothly and effortlessly pan the lens on this head with such ease that it makes it super worth the expense! Also, once balanced, you can pan and let go and the lens stays exactly in the position you left it whether pointing up, down, or some other direction which makes it perfect for shooting wildlife as there is no need to lock it in place as it doesn't move unless you intentionally move it. Of course, you can lock it in place. I highly recommend this. I have never had a lens this big and never had a quality tripod either so it was a hard decision on what I needed. I have no regrets and can't imagine any other head doing half as good of a job as this one. I highly recommend it especially if you are on the fence or don't know what you need!

This product is fantastic!

I use this head on my Gitzo tripod and it works great. I am a nature photographer and it is the best head I've used. Solid, easy to use, very easy to balance. I wish it were a little lighter since the combination of my 500mm prime and D800E is quite heavy, but that is my only complaint.

The Wimberley WH-200-S Sidemount Wimberley Head is a lighter, more compact alternative to the full Wimberley Gimbal Head. The Sidemount Wimberley head shares the main casting and pan and tilt mechanisms with the Wimberley Head, but a side-mounted Arca-Swiss-style quick release clamp replaces the other model's swing arm & adjustable platform. The design of the Sidemount Wimberley head allows you to set the center of gravity of the camera/lens over the pan base, for smooth, stable changes to your lens positioning. The Sidemount Wimberley Head has a built-in Arca-Swiss-style quick release clamp. In order to use the head, your lens must be equipped with an Arca-Swiss-style lens plate.
