OnSet with Daniel Norton: Why and When to Use Hard Light
Date: Thursday, October 23th · 5 - 6pm ET
Location: Adorama Event Space + Livestreamed Online
Livestream Link: https://www.youtube.com/@Adorama/streams
When teaching lighting, especially for portraiture, most photographers will wisely state, "Use soft light." This is not because using soft light is better; it is because it is easier. Soft light simplifies the process of creating a "safe" portrait. But hard light, that's how we can create unforgettable portraits.
Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he shows you how to shape and sculpt the face using hard light. How it can be used to flatter the subject, and mistakes to avoid.

Date: Thursday, November 13th · 5 PM ET
Location: Adorama Event Space + Livestreamed Online
Livestream Link: https://www.youtube.com/@AdoramaEvents/streams
At some point during the year, just about every person has a moment where they feel a little unsure about how they’ll look in photos, and that’s completely normal. Whether it’s worrying about their arms, chin, midsection, or even balding spots, these are real concerns that come up, and photographer, William Adwin gets it. That’s why creating a space of trust right from the beginning is such a big part of the process. When couples feel safe to be honest about what they're self-conscious about, it opens the door to capturing them in the most flattering and genuine way.
There’s a whole toolbox of lighting and posing tricks that can highlight the best features and downplay the areas people might not love as much. And it’s not just about hiding things—it’s about helping couples feel good in front of the camera. There’s also a careful eye on avoiding awkward angles or poses that create weird optical illusions (no one wants to look stiff or bigger than they are just because of a bad pose!). At the end of the day, William’s goal is to make sure every couple feels confident, comfortable, and truly seen in their photos—because that’s when the magic really happens.
