I wanted an acoustic guitar, and was torn between spending ~$1000 on a nice used Taylor, or $200 on a Yamaha FG700. I have young children, so was worried about having an expensive instrument that they could destroy if I accidentally left it out of its case. I'm not a great guitarist, but have played piano nearly all my life, so knew I wouldn't enjoy a guitar that sounded cheap. I played both at a local music store, fully expecting the $2000 Taylor guitars to make the Yamaha sound like garbage. The Taylor guitars didn't blow me away. To my ear the Yamaha is a steal at $200. Finish may not be as pretty as a higher-end guitar, but it has good tone and that's what counts. When I saw Yamaha had released the FG800 (replaces the FG700, and includes scalloped bracing) at NAMM this year, I jumped on it and couldn't be happier. The Yamaha FG series guitars are widely recognized as the best value for a sub-$500 guitar. I'll gladly add my recommendation. The included Gator case is well reviewed everywhere and perfect for my home (with kids). I wouldn't hesitate to throw it in the car. I expect it to handle about anything you can throw at it.

Very good guitar at this price. Adorama shipment is also excellent. Would highly recommend this to all at the beginner level. Fg800 sounds amazing!
