I used this to produce, record, mix down, and master teen pop rock and synthpop music in my studio here in Southern California. I was using another professional brand that I also like. I needed more headphones because I have a second recording studio. I was trying to save money, and I saw these at an affordable price. I knew Yamaha products are professional, so I purchased them. These Yamaha headphone monitors have much more clarity than the other brand that I was using. They also feel great. I could wear them for hours at a time. The mid and high range clarity are critical for the vocalist in the vocal booth too. They also have great bass. I like the straight cord, rather than the coiled one that other brands have. The coiled ones start pulling on your head/neck - not a big deal for a few minutes, but after a few hours they feel uncomfortable. Also, the coiled cords get caught on my table and other cords as I move around the studio desk. This Yamaha cord is light and straight - it's perfect. The headphones also look great! I got the all black ones, but the black and white ones are very hip - hinting to the Yamaha NS-10 monitors that I once owned, and the HS-8s that I currently use.

For budget mixing headphones, the ATH-M50's have met their match. I owned the M50s for several years. They have strong bass and treble, and very good isolation. But their mids are weak and the soundstage is two-dimensional. Not the case with these MT5s. These headphones reveal nearly everything. I've worn these for less than 2 hours and they are now my primary mixing headphone. Low sub-bass is subdued but it's still there, which is honestly fine because most commercial music will be played without subs anyway. Soundstage for a closed-back is quite remarkable, not too big but and manages to be cohesive and not disjointed. These headphones do NOT have the most crystal-clear treble ever, but they give you plenty of treble to work with in most cases. There seem to be two peaks around 7kHz and 11kHz, (just by my ear and an oscillator, not any formal measurements) but they are pretty equal in amplitude and don't distract nearly as much as some other headphones. Mids may be too much for some people, as they are not relaxed and emphasized at 2k-3k. The HPH-MT5 is supposedly inspired by the NS-10s. Like the NS-10s they are unforgiving and in-your-face. No, they're not exact copies of the NS-10s in headphone form, but you will not find anything closer to them at this price point.
