I have played the RBX170 for years now in various settings from the studio to the stage and I am happy with it's versatility. For the price that I paid for it the RBX170 gives a great quality sound.

I tried every bass at Guitar Center. I kept coming back to the Yamaha. Truly, this wasn't my desired finish, but the playability won me over. I stopped playing after college, and suffered from carpal. I recently decided to take guitar and bass back up, so, ease of play was very important. I took the bass to a local luthier, who said the neck was perfectly straight. He adjusted the string height and the intonation, and the bass played even better than before. The only thing I don't like is the tuners. Tuning down isn't possible. They are loose tuning down, so you have to tune down, and then back up to the note. Minor adjustments are made more difficult due to this. Otherwise, I haven't found any other issues. This is just a great bass at a great price.

Just bought one at Guitar Center. The Tech dropped the price of the bass and provided a Pro Coverage warranty so the price was the original $199 as listed! I am a beginner... shopped for weeks....months! I had played this and loved the sound and deep lows. Got a Fender Rumble amp 100W and practice every day. My finish is Old Violin Burst. The grain is visible underneath until it darkens around the edges. The grain is just straight and advertised as Alder, Agathis or Nato. It doesn't have that individual look of certain wood grains. But....... I"M A BEGINNER....... and this bass has it all. Right now I spend most of my time messing with all the controls on both the bass and amp. I get so many different sounds and configurations. Look, for a bass and Pro Coverage, and free set-up, all for $199............. there is no way to regret my decision.

I used my Rbx170 in every gigs, jamming and even recording. It delivered great sounds, it doesnt matter if the venue is huge, open or even small in a bars. It is very lightweight and has a small body even it has 24 frets. The looks match with my personality(being a small guy). Amazing bass that i ever play, my best friend next to my wife of course. by the way i named her "Marilyn" Yamaha RBX170 Rules!!!

I use my RBX170 to play at Weekend Services. I am simply amazed by this bass. It was recommended to me by the store staff as a good beginner bass. 5 years later and I am still playing on it. It has very good feel with great sound. I have no need to look further until it time for a 5 string, which will be a Yamaha.

Yamaha makes high-quality instruments, no matter what the model number is. Don't judge the 170 on its amazing (maybe under-priced) price tag. This is a great bass for any player. For the more seasoned players you can spend some more money and upgrade the pickups and pots (DiMario, Seymour Duncan, etc.) and be even more in love with it and have a bass that would have cost you 2-3 times as much for a competitor's. Bottom line is that like any other Yamaha instrument, this bass has a smooth and easy feel to it that makes you want to play.

Great feel, smooth sound, solid construction and sharp finish (old violin), it gives much more expensive basses a run for the money! Perfect for starters and pros alike!

I am a proffesional guitarist. I bought this bass for my 17 year d daughter. So she can jam with her brother and I. I played this model at 3 different stores. I compared it with every bass they had in the same price range. I was always happiest with the yamaha. It has the best tone, nice playable neck and a really cool look to it. My friend, a proffesional bass player, recommended GHS Boomers 45 - 90. Put the on and the frett noise is almost gone, but the sound is so much better now and the 90 gauge is much easier for my daughter to press down. To sum it up. If your looking for a great bass at a great price? Look no further. This is the one you need

I was in the market for a reasonably priced bass to replace an old Fender Precision copy that I've had for over 20 years. I only play bass for recording in my home studio - I'm a guitar player. While at Guitar Center recently I noticed this Yamaha bass for a very low price, and it looked great in black. I picked it up and was surprised to find it had a nice neck which was very playable. I plugged it in to a Hartke bass amp and the sound was fantastic, especially on the split pickup. The ability to mix the two pickups enables me to get just about any tone that I want. The action is set just a little high, so I will try lowering the strings slightly, but it is so much better than my old one it's not a big deal. The bass reminds me of a friend's Alvarez. I especially like the light weight - much lighter than the old Fender copy and a Jazz Bass I compared with it in the store. I would recommend this bass without hesitation to anyone.

This is the second bass I have purchased and am very pleased. I bought the old violin sunburst and it is beautiful. The action is smooth and the tone is fantastic. I've talked with two other musicians since and they told me it was a great bass, especially for the money.
