Questions & Answers

David H : My Yamaha RS 201 shuts off after 8 hours. Can this be changed?JAMES S : The answer is on page 19 of the Owner's Manual. 8 hour-shutoff is the default but this can be changed to other lengths, or shut off. Go to Menu on the remote, scroll down to Auto Stby, press Enter, then scroll to the setting you want. Press Enter, then press Menu again to exit. If the receiver is properly ventilated, there is absolutely no reason it should have to shut off after eight hours. If it's going to overheat, it will happen well before 8 hours elapse.FREDDIE B : I've downsized and am currently using the Yamaha RX-V 473 and have no problems with shutdown. However, some of the older Yamahas run hot so proper ventilation is a must. Recommend that you have no obstruction surrounding the receiver. Most receivers have a thermo shut off safety switch that will turn off power if the system reaches a certain temp. Hope this helps.JAMES S : Yes. If you have the owner's manual, go to page 19 and it's explained there. Turn on the receiver, press Menu on the remote, scroll down to the desired menu item ("Auto Stby") and press Enter. Use the down arrow button to scroll to 'Off' then press Enter again, then Menu to exit. This had been an annoyance to me as well but I hadn't looked into the question until now. The options, besides Off, are 2H, 4H, 8H & 12H; 8 hours is the default.

Sounds great!

I haven't use the radio yet. I use it basically as a receiver for my home studio. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sound. It fills the room nicely. You can only partially see it sitting under the monitor in my studio pic.

Works great

I use this in my wood shop where tools can get loud. The amplifier is able to keep the volume up so I can hear the music or audio book.

Reminds me of the receiver I bought in 1972

My wife was extremely frustrated with the two previous receivers we owned--they were part of home theater systems and she often could not remember which buttons to push. So when we moved I decided that we'd forget about a home theater system and use the speakers in the TV for TV sound and set-up a separate system for music and radio. This Yamaha receiver has better specs and more power and features than the receiver I had in college in the 1970s--and it is nearly as simple to use--we are very pleased with it. I did route the TV sound into it, but I only turn that on when we want to listen to one of the cable TV music channels. We are right in Houston and so have not had trouble receiving radio stations--I have an AM station on right now. I like the receiver's simple, classic appearance.

Great entry level receiver

This is a nice receiver for a basic stereo system. I have it for music only. Easy to set up and use. I like the retro style with no digital inputs. I still have a turn table and cassette deck. If you don't need digital inputs this little unit has plenty of power ind lots of inputs.

R-S201

This unit along with a cd changer and 2 speakers occupy my home office. It has more than enough power to drive the small Polk stand-mounted speakers. Very easy to set up and use as long as the room is not dark (controls are hard to see). Sound quality is more speakers than receiver in this setup. That said, there is no disappointment. Excellent for the price/performance

Great performance from an affordable unit

Using it for CD player, connected to satellite receiver and phono turntable with a pre-amp with great results. Have remote speakers outdoors, over the deck and Bose Acoustamass system in great room all being driven together at the same time and the receiver amplifier remains cool to the touch. AM/FM sensitivity good with indoor antennas. It was delivered within 48 hours and was easy to hook up and simple to program.

Simple yet unexpected "feature"

It will automatically go into standby when listening to quiet music or sounds, like wind noise to help go to sleep. Automatic standby makes a startling click while trying to sleep. Also when it's quiet, there are periodic popping noise patterns. The AM radio receives much more interference than the receiver that it replaced.

great receiver!

I hear things I didn't hear with my TV speakers-cars drive by-airplanes fly by and they go left to right and right to left-I can tell with my eyes closed-you can hear the difference!

Quality sound

Plugged it in connected speakers and it works great. I put some cheaper outdoor spkrs on my patio and they sound great. Bought it for the option of controlling the sound in my house sep[arate from my patio. Have to buy a CD changer to hook up to it now.

Performance and Quality Sound

I left the old stereo system behind years ago in favor of the digital streaming computer connected world. I missed it and had lots of CD's that I could no longer play. I wanted the rich powerful detailed sound of a system. I chose this unit as the base and most basic primary need. It is amazing to me the quality and power that this unit exemplifies in an affordable package. Great basic FM reception. Powers my speakers well. Speaker wire?? Wow, that was a flashback to the old days...Recommend this unit highly.

Very nice, basic stereo receiver

I use this amp to power my in-ceiling stereo speakers in three rooms of my house. It is located in a basement TV viewing area, as the home was pre-wired by a previous owner. The FM reception is acceptable using only the supplied antenna. Sound volume is also acceptable and easily plays all three rooms at one time.

Great sound for the money

Easy set up only thing I don't like is that you can not change balance, bass or treble unless you use remote would be nice if controls were on front of receiver, other than that great unit, great sound don't like remote unit is behind closed doors remote is useless.

Just what I was looking for!

I needed a receiver in my living room just to listen to music. No home theater set up, just music. This unit fit the bill perfectly and at a great price. Since I have a turntable, I will have to buy a phono amp since this unit doesn't have one built in.

A Heck Of A Deal!

I purchased this receiver as an add-on amplifier system for my home theater flat-screen TV; it drives a pair of speakers from the audio output of the television, so I don't have to fire up the entire system to have better quality audio from the TV. Plus, I can listen to background music if I so desire. This receiver is a heck of a deal; it sounds good, was easy to hook up, and was perfect for the application. I've been a Yamaha user for some time; the main amplifier in my system is a 1981 Yamaha power amplifier that has worked flawlessly and continues to do so. At the time I purchased the power amplifier, I also purchased a Yamaha AM/FM tuner and a separate component preamplifier. I still have them and they're all working just fine, and all 1981 vintage. There's not much more to say; they build excellent equipment.

Yamaha's Customer Service is absolutely the best. I had received a defective unit, they were very prompt in handling my situation, paying return shipping, and quickly sending a replacement.

Radio turns itself on

RS300 can't properly receive 87.7 FM. Station cuts in and out every 3 seconds. RS201 receives FM 87.7 but the radio has turned itself on at all times of day or nite several times, once at 1:30 a.m. Am trying an RN301. Hope that unt works for FM 87.7 and doesn't turn itself on when not needed or wanted.

I've used this amp/receiver to set up a system for just a part of my house and outdoor speakers. It is very effective, great quality and great for the cost!! It makes a good basic or small system.

Powerful simple receiver

This is the perfect receiver for an office environment for the individual looking for great sound without the need for all the bells and whistles of a home theater system. The output power is amazing and can shake a room with the Yamaha subwoofer attached to the speaker output.

great simple receiver

Was looking for a simple stereo to use for tv sound enhancement and listening to music. This fit the bill perfectly. Very easy to set up and operate. The included antenna leaves much to be desired, but I have noticed that is the case with most receivers. Easy fix with a different antenna. Keep in mind that the sound is only going to be as good as your speakers. I was not impressed when I first hooked this up to a small pair of polk bookshelf speakers. Then I added an old (30+ years) pair of kenwood floor speakers and it sounds fantastic. I think todays speakers are built to use with subwoofers. Back in the 70's and 80's we didn't need subs because the speakers had 10-15" woofers built in. Plenty of power. The volume goes to 100 but I could only go to 80 comfortably. Noticed no distortion whatsoever. TV sound is greatly improved. Music via radio and cd is very impressive. I am very happy with this unit and it has exceeded my expectations for the price.

Amazing!

I have this hooked up to a grace wifi internet radio and a channelmaster 6 element fm antenna with a radioshack antenna booster and the reception is amazing. if the internet radio sound quality is 128kbps or more it sounds better than fm on my bose 301's.

Good Receiver for the price

Great receiver for the price. This is my fourth or fifth Yamaha receiver and my first bottom of the line one. Sound is just as good as all of the high priced ones. However, I had to exchange the first one as during the first month it would not turn on five or six times until you unplugged it and then plugged it back in. Have only had the replace a few weeks but this problem has not reoccurred. My only real complaint is the use of the cheap spring clip speaker wire connections. Also, although I always listen to music flat, there seems to be little if any differential when using the teble and bass controls.

Excellent product, good price

I use the system to control speakers in 3 rooms and outside, primarily in 2 rooms, and it does the job perfectly, with plenty of power. Setup was easy, although I didn't use the included antenna, but one that I had used with my previous receiver. I'm very pleased with the product.

big sound modest price!

I listen to clasic rock,R&B,jazz and some clasical havent found anything that the R-S201 didn't do justice to clean sound at any volume level. My only complaint about the reciever would be the antena that was included. I had to buy an aftermarket antena, but now recive FM stations from 150 mi. distant! Easy to set up and use!

An excellent no-frills stereo receiver

By johnda

I was searching for a 2 channel amplifier or receiver to replace my aging unit in my living room system. After examining a number of choices, the R-S201 met all my needs at a very good price. After setting it up I was extremely pleased with the design and audio performance that it could give me. My only reservation is the FM/AM performance with the supplied antennas was not very good, because I live in a rural area. If you are not close to an urban location, you would need to use external ant...

The Yamaha R-S201, with 100W x 2 high drive power that's above its class, has a high sound quality design that minimizes the length of signal routes and optimizes the circuit layout. Positioning the power transformer near the power amp circuit reduces power loss while improving peak power supply capacity to enable high volume output. The signal ground and power supply ground are connected at one point, eliminating mutual interference to achieve a higher S/N ratio. The result is sound filled with clarity and a feeling of openness.

You can register up to 40 total FM and AM stations that you often listen to, then conveniently select them from either the receiver or the remote control. Auto Preset lets you automatically search for and register FM stations that can be received in your area. Frequencies appear on the display, so even when you want to listen to a new station, you can easily tune to its frequency.
