Another Yamaha product

Unit fairly easy to set up, although the diagram to place speaker wire into the back screw connectors are was a little confusing. A call to the help center was made and then no problem connecting the speaker wires to the unit. As said by others the FM / AM signals are weak. The display panel goes off if you use the Pure Direct mode, thus making it easy to forget to turn the unit off. The headphone jack can be used for a third set of speakers and it won't cut out the main house speakers, which is something I wanted to have. A different brand I bought, and sent back, cancelled out the main speakers in the house when I plugged the outside speakers into the headphone jack.

Great Replacement

I purchase this to replace a 30 year old Sony receiver. I found this Yamaha easy to set up, and with hook-ups to accommodate my phono, CD player, and tape player. Sound quality is very good. I have my system in a rather large family room and this receiver has enough power combined with my B&W speakers and Polk subwoofer to fill the room with a very smooth music performance. I primarily listen to folk and easy listening music, so I can not comment on the sound output for hard rock. At the my preferred listening levels for extended periods, the receiver remains very cool, with no tendency to get excessively warm. I like that the controls are simple and direct. In the time I have owned this receiver, I could not be more satisfied with its features and performance.

Typical Yamaha Build

Bought this unit for a bedroom/patio usage. The output is crystal clear. So far I have only used it streaming Pandora, the FM section and have connected to a laptop streaming the new high resolution audio. The amplifier section is clean and the bass, treble, and loudness controls are effective and responsive. I plan on adding a sub later and connecting a cd player and turntable. This is a great first system for anyone looking for an inexpensive stereo receiver.

RS 300 Receiver / Amplifier

My son gave me the unit as a gift to replace an old Pioneer unit that was having problems. The Yamaha was easy to install - the terminals were easy to use with clear markings. The controls are easy to use and clearly marked as well. My only negative is the AM reception, not as good as the old Pioneer with the antenna in the same location. Other than that (which is not a big deal,) I'm entirely pleased with this new unit.

Sharp Receiver Meets Expectation

This receiver was purchased to match speakers I already possessed. They had to be 100 W up to 130 W. I researched several and narrowed them down by specs and price. This unit is clear and durable. I like adjusting the low frequencies in unison with my 100 W Base Subwoofer. This unit fit on my stereo rack perfectly. I connected it to a Minidisc Recorder, a CD Player and a seven Band Equalizer. Occasionally, I enjoy the connection of the music output of my cellphone to this audio system. The totality of the complete package satisfies my desires, and music appreciation. Soothes any minor distress. I didn't like the FM reception on some of my favorite stations in my apartment, but overall great purchase.

Great Product!

Bought to replace old 80s vintage stereo receiver with bad right channel. Needed something to handle all my components (turntable, cassette player, CD & DVD). Main reservation on giving 5 stars is that analog components (turntable & cassette deck) require much higher volume setting than digital components (CD & FM tuner). Also, AM reception (although seldom used) is weak. Otherwise, complete satisfaction!

Very Satisfied

I find no CONs, but only PROs about this receiver. The sound quality is great and doesn't sound muffled as did my old TECHNICS receiver. The reception in both AM and FM are very clear and easy to tune to the right station without "jiggling" the dial to tune in stations---they are precise.

Easy to use

I purchased from a locally-owned business. The salesperson printed a photo of the back of the receiver and gave me drawing of how to install... which cord goes where, etc. So I really don't know how good Yamaha's directions are since I followed his drawing. I love to hear music all over the house. I work at home so right now in my office I can hear music that originates from the dining room.

Supplement to TV speakers

Using for audio and home theater. Replaces my not so hot TV speakers. My research showed that a stereo system would be better for playing both music and DVDs. Not disappointed in the sound quality. It is VERY good. Even the bass is all that I need. Sound reproduction is incredible. Especially considering the cost of this amp/receiver. Using with 2 Klipsch bookshelf speakers. Only real issue for me was the I get NO sound at all until the volume is at -45 db or so. Which seems odd to me. But I still seem to have enough volume on the upper end for everything that I put through the system.

Handles 2 sets of speakers affordably

I use it outside in our outdoor kitchen. We have speakers built in to the barbeque island and speakers by the pool. I liked having a Speaker A and Speaker B choice or A+B so we can have it playing further away or closer or both sets. It works great for that and I also plug in my iPad or Iphone to the receiver to play Sirius Satellite radio through the wi-fi in our house.

Sterling Sound Quality

I really like the loudness control. It prevents some domestic lack of tranquility while enabling me to hear music with depth and clarity. I listen to classical music and find the sound quality outstanding even when volume is turned down. Plenty of separation and clarity of the various instrument and voices.

Does just what it was made for.

This brings back the Old Fashioned 'Stereo' systems from the past-Good FM tuner+Phono input+Tape Deck input+Extra inputs+simple front panel controls like the old days( I mean before multi-channel ). This replaced a 7 year old Denon that blew from my second-system, which I don't need anything other than Stereo on. With a Sony dubbing cassette deck, a Gemini manual turntable, a Technics CD player, two JBL bookshelf speakers and a JBL sub-woofer, with this new receiver is a good clean 'blast from the past'. A conservative power rating of 50w per channel, a truly clean and sensitive FM tuner and a very easy set-up . Just after the first day with it I am impressed by the clean sound from all sources. The remote was acceptably functionable, no it doesn't have loudness or tone control buttons on it, but not a big deal. The sub-woofer has a 90hz cut-off point which is OK, sub-woofers have their own cut-off controls anyway. If you don't need a hundred watts/per, or 'pre-out/main-in' jacks, or any 'Switched outlets' on back, this receiver will give you great sound for a small or medium area basic set up. Too bad Yamaha has removed ALL extra 'Switched Outlets' from their new receivers, stereo or multi-channel. I am going to look for an older Yamaha top of the line Stereo receiver, which had those fretures, to replace my main Denon system receiver before that blows, like the Yamaha RX-797. There are still some out there. But this R-S300BL is a very refreshing replacement for the old stereo units of the old days.

NOT TOTALLY SATISFIED

I have a basic system utilizing old but still great sounding Cerwin-Vega VS-120 speakers which are very efficient. This product was recommended to me by a stereo equipment retailer where I live. I finished hooking up the system and it sounds as great as it did with my older receiver. However, I found that the AUTO PRESET feature didn't function the way the manual described. When I pressed OPTION on the remote, I didn't get the expected AUTO-PRESET choice and instead just switched back and forth between the volume and station display. I proceeded to perform the manual preset which worked as advertised. This is a minor feature which, for the most part, is only used when you first set up you receiver. But still, it is a malfunction; but not one that care to spend any time chasing down a fix or returning the unit.

"Once again, Yamaha gets it right"

Great system for basic hi-fi sound. I use it to play CDs, Ipod, and FM. Very high quality sound. The controls are logical and easy to use. I bought my first Yamaha receiver in 1977, and remarkably, the design and operation of this model was very reminiscent of my first Yamaha. The Pure Direct sound feature still sets the standard!

Excellent Receiver

I had a Yamaha CR620 Receiver that I bought in March of 1978. It finally died a month shy of its 35th birthday. Impressed with the Yamaha's longevity, I went looking for one to replace it. I wanted something not too complicated that would incorporate some modern technology but also play FM radio, turntable, tape deck, and CD player. I did some research on line and went to a dealer and asked about the r-s300. He said that would be the perfect replacement and he was right. I had no difficulty setting it up and it does exactly what I need it to do. It may be my imagination but the sound seems to be a great deal better than it was through the old receiver.

I've been waiting for this receiver!

It's a great receiver! Don't let the power rating fool you! It really caught the Yamaha charm. A lot of things on the front of this receiver are not standard features anymore. There are no video components run through it, so that stuff won't degrade the audio signal chain - great for using with a desktop PC and some bookshelf or floorstanding speakers. "Loudness" is as simple as this: It turns the mids down; that's it - and a little goes a long way. The idea behind this is that using subtractive EQ is much better for ear fatigue than boosting Bass and (especially) Treble. Loudness also allows the audio to maintain a higher level of purity than boosting, which creates high and low frequency nodes. It also gives you more usable volume "throw" by allowing you to set your gain where you prefer to run your gear at. Excellent components, fantastic build, I really liked the concept of this receiver - until the main selling point for me didn't really come through. I knocked one star off due to features, because I am really bummed that it doesn't have volume control for the sub out. I wanted to be able to turn my sub off via remote from across the room, the controllable features from the remote are a little basic. I can have quick reference with the loudness control for flattening my mix and turning it up to see what it's going to sound like after someone does something similar in say, their car at low volumes. For some of my friends that went to the same audio production school I went to, I'd recommend this receiver to them regardless of price point, which says a lot!

Excellent Basic Receiver

If you need a basic stereo system (and a home theater system would be overkill for your purposes), this is an excellent unit. I would like a few more inputs for modern things such as a USB or 3.5mm input for mp3 sources. I considered units with Bluetooth and additional inputs, but they all had output features that I simply do not need to run my small stereo system. It does allow me to use remote speakers in other parts of the house. I would also have likes an electrical output that would allow an additional source to be turned on/off with the remote (or the power switch). I am very pleased with this unit.

Love it!

This is my first new receiver in over 25 years. The set up was easy, the reception is great, even though we are in a bad reception pocket. I like to control the bass and treble, so this gives me that freedom. I like that I can preset my stations so I don't have to hunt for them.

Fine Liitle Unit

I just hope that compnaies like Yamaha continue to make plain old stereo units for a long time. I know people want to go with the whole Dolby surrround HD "sounds like your really there" type of unit these days but I tell you...If I didn't already have on old budget surround sound receiver in the living room, I'd just get something like the R-S300 and use the four speakers and that's it. I wouldn't even worry about having to have a center channel and all that junk. I like simplicity and I hav...
