Except for Zone2 It Is Very Good

I can't get the Zone 2it to play my patio speakers. I only use Zone 2 for audio through a Niles4. My old Marantz would work for the TV audio through Dish, but it failed with my OPPO BDP-103D and my CD player Pioneer PD-F1009. Other than that, the receiver is quite good.

Overall, I am happy with the playback of the receiver.

Though there are a few discrepancies with this receiver, I would still recommend it to someone who is looking to upgrade or begin building a new home theater system.

Great AVR with one giant problem

I recently upgraded from the 1020 to the 1060 so that I could upgrade my system to 4k/HDR. Unfortunately, some of the information is a tad bit misleading. This AVR does support HDR, but only one type of HDR, HDR10. It does not support Dolby Vision pass-thru, which in my opinion, makes this unit obsolete right out of the box. If you have no intentions of ever using Dolby Vision HDR, then this is a fabulous receiver. But if you want to be able to use bluray with Dolby Vision or stream titles that use Dolby Vision HDR, then do not buy this unit. I've contacted Yamaha support about this issue as well. They've stated that it is absolutely not possible to add support for Dolby Vision via a firmware upgrade. Just wanted to share this important information with potential buyers.

Great sound easy to find with Yamaha

It was finally time to replace my RX-V2400, another Yamaha workhorse that still sounds great. Fitting in with my speaker arrangement and my budget, the RX-A1060 was actually my second choice. My brother raved about his Onkyo TX-NR656 so I bought one only to find when playing dvd-a's on my Oppo UDP-203 the beginnings of the songs were being clipped. Unacceptable! I hauled the 203 down to my Yamaha dealer and connected it to a 1060 and bingo, no clipped songs. SOLD! Now I am cranking my tunes in all formats in 5.1.2 and couldn't be happier. My neighbors are thinking otherwise... Regarding the Cons: 1. I listen to music, movies and tv with the surrounds set at different levels so it would be nice to be able to write those settings to different Scenes. 2. It would be convenient to have analog multichannel inputs for patching in older gear - cest la vie... 3. Why the silver remote?? Black, please. To summarize, this is a great sounding avr with tons of listening, viewing and zone options so don't make the mistake I did, make the RX-A1060 your first choice.

Very nice

I was deciding between Sonos + a surround system versus Aventage. I went with two Aventage receivers: a 1050 and a 1060. They control 3 zones of music and one surround sound (5 speaker) zone. They actually work well together. I can even pipe AV sound from one Yamaha with a HDMI cable input to our master bedroom controlled by the other Yamaha (with no direct AV connection). I would like to be able to directly connect both receivers so all inputs are shared without going through wifi, but it actually works really well right now. For the price, this combo was cheaper than Sonos connect amps alone, even forgetting the need for a surround sound system. Highly recommend!

Yamaha needs to address (ARC) issues for their AVR line

This is an amazing receiver that does everything well with the exception of an Audio Return Channel (ARC) issue. If you plan on using a Smart TV to stream (Netflix etc.) and using (ARC) to direct the sound from the TV to the AVR "in Dolby Digital (DD)", Yamaha receivers will have intermediate sound dropouts (.5 to 1 sec dropouts). Unfortunately these sound drops completely ruin the experience of say "watching DareDevil in Dolby Vision on an LG OLED". The sound dropoutss do not occur if the TV is set to PCM, but then of course then you lose the dedicated surround sound, so that ruins the experience. I have tested DD over (ARC) both Sony and Marantz AVRs and there is no issue. I have tested this on other Yamaha models and the issue occurs on those as well, so this is a "Yamaha AVR" issue. I have tried to address this directly with Yamaha and they state "this is not a known issue", so as the new models have released RX-A1040; 50; 60; an so on, the issue continues. I can no longer recommend Yamaha AVRs for this use case.

I replaced my older Yamaha receiver (still works great) to take advantage of the HDMI inputs and the Multi-room feature. I received a wonderful surprise when I heard the improvement in sound quality. I am also able to take advantage of all my 4k Smart TV has to offer. The sound quality rivals esoteric separates and the video is as my TV manufacturer promised.

Technical Knockout

Have had the unit now for 3 weeks. Setup was easy following the instructions at first then the functions become recognizable and easy to change. At this point the unit is being used 5.1. Went through the YPAO setup using a camera tripod and it seemed to set the levels very good. Audio and dialog from a Blu-Ray movie is great and the surround decoding in wonderful. I can only imagine how it would be in 9.1.2. AV pass through works well. I am only using 2 of the HDMI inputs but also using the component and optical for a second connection to a Dish receiver. Picture quality to a 4000K TV is astounding. The unit's phono preamp has that typical warm and accurate analog sound that Yamaha phono sections are known for. Optical input from a Yamaha CD-S300 through the RX-A1060 DAC has a very good sound, not harsh at all. Overall audio reproduction is very accurate. The amplifier section does tend to get warm when working but this is normal for most amps and receivers of this size. Since the unit is in a cabinet, I have a small USB to 110 powered fan to pull air from the unit. The fan and the Yamaha sub are kicked on by the number 1 trigger output from the unit to a solid state relay that provides power to a 120 volt outlet when the RX-A1060 is powered on. FM reception is good for local stations but a more powerful antenna would be needed for fringe areas or distant stations, again typical of most receivers. When using a USB stick or listening to Pandora you can tell a difference in the mid highs to highs with the enhance program on. It seems to me to bring out more of the presence in the music file. Decoding the newer high resolution files such as FLAC is no problem for the unit and you will not be disappointed in the sound quality. I haven't used the Bluetooth or Musicast yet. Overall this is a wonderfully thought out receiver in both AV and audio quality. Now for the Cons: Yamaha, what in the world were you thinking when you placed a sticker on the front door of the unit showing features. After removing the sticker there is a permanent image of where the sticker was. I have tried several different things to remove this and it just doesn't go away. Since my unit is in a cabinet with a glass door in front of it, it is not noticeable except to me. Please, in the future, there is no need for a sticker on the unit itself. Please, no stickers on the unit.

Great Receiver !

Hooked up to 4K Samsung curved 55" TV, Samsung 4K BluRay player, Clear Audio Turntable and 11 speakers including 2 Pioneer CS-63DX, a Paradigm center and 2 homemade JBLs. I have to have an older Yamaha RX-V590 Receiver hooked up to the Bose 901s to get them to play through the Bose EQ. Also have 2 Bose 301s playing through the Yamaha RX-V590 Receiver and they go through the Bose EQ as well.
