Review update: This unit is NOT an A/V unit because when a video signal is run through from my fire stick, It's snowy and jumpy and also burned out 2 fire sticks! In order to get my entertainment system to have decent video again I had to disconnect all the video sources from this receiver and run them to my tv. I also returned this unit once for the reason above only to have the next one be just as bad. and I don't know why yamaha is so proud of itself for this unit having the very first 7 speaker stereo output in the industry BECAUSE & SPEAKER STEREOI IS NOT, cannot be A THING, Stereo comes in speaker pairs NOT AN ODD number but some unknown "brilliant" designers at Yamaha thought that 6 speaker stereo should be 7 speaker stereo with sound coming out the center channel SMACK DAB IUN THE VERY MIDDLE OF THE FRONT STEREO LEFT AND RIGHT SOUND FIELD< as well, which effectively makes the front stereo sound field MONO!?! It's very annoying because the center channel is very efficient and loud which I need it to be to hear the dialog in movies, but don't need in 7 speaker stereo THAT SHOULD BE ONLY SIX SPEAKERS. DUH! what part of "Left & Right channels" in stereo sound did YAMAHA FORGET when designing this ?

This unit sounds at least as good as the famous old 70s Yamaha monster stereos I've had when properly configured, which wasn't exceedingly difficult to do. It's also a lot easier than the old stereos to achieve the proper levels for the best sound as each speaker can be individually configured with the program that has an EQ, distance frequency cutoff and level adjustments in manual configuration mode. The cons: #1 trying to read the user manual on my phone because they don't send a full one with the unit and I lost it anyway. and I feel that the "full" manual is jumbled, confusing and leaves a lot out or buries it somewhere, such as where a lot of the controls are, specifically tone controls and the YPAO positions. i auto configured 3 YPAO listening positions but still cannot find where to activate any of them and it doesn't say in the manual how to and it is not in the setup mode.So the manual sucks and makes this unit look scary complicated to run , but it is not.Networking: only one thing works for me, the Wifi internet connection. But i do not use any of the embedded streaming music services that rely on it so I cannot comment on them. However I can comment on the fact that I could Wifi direct connect to my phone, but then do absolutely nothing with it, such as stream anything to the receiver. i also could not connect with my phone to the chrome cast plugged in back, nor could I connect my phone via Bluetooth. neither device saw the other. Also With the wifi connection, there is no option to save it, so if you go to another conx and come back again, you have to enter the password over again, which you cannot see. s o it is very basic networking without the ability to go on the internet directly from the receiver.Oh I almost forgot, set in "small mode" I used to (yesterday after setup) be able to select a wide range of crossover frequencies for the front presence and center channel speakers, but now the only option is 200 hz which sucks.

Love the feature packed receiver. The on screen set up is easy. I've been a long time customer of Yamaha. Trouble is, this receiver struggles with 4K content. Even properly configured and the right cables do not solve the issues. Frustrating for sure. Again, I love everything else about it. This may be my last Yamaha.

Hat's off the Yamaha customer service and standing behind their products and customers. This AV receiver replaces a refurbished RX-A840 which I purchased a year ago and would no longer consistently respond to commands from the app or IP address. Had it in for service twice but no luck, some kind of problem they could not diagnose. Yamaha tech support was there every step of the way, and finally decided to send a replacement. I was pleasantly surprised to have a brand new RX-A870 delivered to my doorstep. It has quite a bit more capability than the previous model, and of course it is working flawlessly. It appears that Yamaha no longer supports the Yamaha Internet Radio Tuning service in this model. This service allowed you to search for stations by entering the call numbers. With the RX-A870 there is no tuning service and the station look up is done on the app. It is a bit more cumbersome, but once you find you stations and book mark to favorites the hard work is done. This newer model also allows Zone2 to "Sync to Main" which is super convenient. The only downside is it's no longer possible to connect and control my gen 7 iPod which could be done on the older RX-A840. This is the only feature I miss, and will have to utilize AirPlay from my Mac. Overall, the RX-A870 is a great performer, and a great value. As a lifelong Yamaha customer (with an old CR-1020 stereo receiver which is still working great,) I am very pleased to see that the standards for quality of Yamaha products and customer service have remained very high over the years, which is very rare these days.

Must have. Great new features. Running the receiver from my phone anywhere in the house. Great controls via bluetooth. The sound is amazing and well worth the money spent. I cannot be happier. Only thing I have not yet figured out is how to run my components as a pass through on the receiver. I do not always want it on. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. This replace an Onkoyo that stopped working after only three years. Contacted corporate with serial number and model with no response. You have lost a customer for life. Thank you Yamaha (so far).
