Paired with Definitive 600 Speakers and am happy. I researched for 6 months before buying. Set up is difficult because the receiver has many options. Still trying to figure out t=how to best use with Smart TV. $K compatibility is great. love the features, just need time to learn.

I had a Pioneer unit that died after 18 months but it only had 12 months of warranty. This unit has a 2. Year warranty. The Yamaha is much easier to set up and use.

I owned a yamaha HTA6050 so the 5.1 speakers worked fine on the new receiver

I have tried a few times to sit down and figure this out. After fumbling through it, I was able "rig" it to get the surround sound to work with my Samsung Smart TV. Only getting 20% of use for my money.

After much research I purchased this receiver because it appeared to be the top choice for 2015-2016 in my price range. For the most part my research has been validated. The sound calibration mic is a real plus and it works wonderfully to establish sound settings for your listening area. The remote is light weight, well laid out and easy to use. I like having the ability to connect to my network via ethernet. ALso, this unit has a pass-through functionality whereby even with the unit turned off, active HDMI signals are passed to the HDMI-out. The only issue I have found is with older mono sound track DVDs (we have more than a few). Even when I set the blu-ray player to output surround encoded sound, the receiver interprets the sound as mono and uses only the center speaker. The way around this is to change the sound setting to 'mono movie'. Not a big deal, but there does not appear to be a way to get this to happen automatically. I just want to pop a DVD or blu-ray in a player and hit 'play'. My old receiver would do this automatically. Anyway, if I could get that to work this review would change to 5 star. For most people, especially those concerned with connectivity, this RX-V479 is head and shoulders the best in it's price range if you can still find one.

This receiver is incredible. I'm in heaven! Thanks Yamaha. I do wish, however, that Yamaha made a 2.1 receiver that had a lot of power (~100 wpc) and also had all the features this receiver has (HDMI, airplay, bluetooth, subwoofer pre out, etc.). I hate having to get a 5.1 or 7.2 receiver just so I can get the features I need. Not everyone wants surround sound capability.

GREAT BUY.

I use the product as a surround sound amplifier for cable and Blu ray playback and HDMI switching. I use a Harmony Remote to control the DVR cable box the Receiver, the Blu-Ray Player and the Samsung Smart TV. Took two weeks and printing the 170 page Receiver manual and the 140 page TV manual to discover that the Harmony and the TV were fighting to control the Receiver and then to disable the HDMI-cec control on the TV and Receiver. What a pain. But it works great now.

I have had this receiver for a couple of weeks and we really enjoy it. I didn't know what I was missing when I watched movies with a stereo receiver (not an A/V receiver) for my sound. I am also very happy with the apps that allow you to control the receiver from a smartphone. I have the Music Cast app and the Yamaha AV Controller app. It appears to be well built and has great sound quality. I can watch movies at a fairly high volume and it doesn't seem annoyingly loud like it did with my old receiver.

Very intuitive operation. Tech support is excellent and the support staff is easy to understand and patient. I purchased the receiver as primarily for surround sound and was pleasantly surprised the sonic qualities for music are excellent.

I used this for a good Home Theater experience in a small area. The YPAO calibration tool makes up for not having optimal speaker placement, it even told me I had one of the speakers out of phase, reversed polarity. The HDMI and Optical hookups made it easy for a flexible setup, most of the time just switching the Monitor. It makes things easy to operate for everyone.

It was good to be able to use banana plugs instead of having bare wire and spring clips. The YPAO speaker setup worked well. The Hard cover guide was inadequate, as it is annoying to have to keep referring to the computer for more details.

This product is the hub of my home entertainment sytem. With its 6 hdmi inputs, I replaced an hdmi multiplexer dongle and converted several component inputs to hdmi, freeing up an hdmi input on my TV. My product was missing the remote, but I use Harmony remotes for all my products anyway. From what I can see from the manual, though, the native remote looks way too complicated. I'll stick with the harmony. One thing that puzzles me is the use of -db as a measure of relative volume. I know what decibels are, but who thinks a volume of -46db is "just right"?! Overall, LOVE the product. Only sorry I waited so long to upgrade.

This thing has six HDMI inputs which is great. But it has only 4 buttons on the front. In fact switching inputs doesn't seem to be the prime function for these buttons. I don't really care about DSP effects. One could reprogram the buttons to allow quick switching but I'd rather do that from my easy chair across the room. Stongly recommend a universal remote and skip fooling with those buttons on the unit. sound and set up are great even when using the virtual front speaker set up.

I purchased this RX-V479 to replace a RX-V471 that was damaged by lightning. Just like the old unit, this unit was very easy to set up, especially the automatic sound field setup with the YPAO microphone. This unit also includes Bluetooth and WiFi, that the RX-V471 did not have. This makes it much easier to play music from my apple devices. The sound is absolutely great, and the different sound effects make it even better. Although I do not consider this a negative, Yamaha should include a cover for the audio-in / USB ports on the front, like on the RX-V471. It would just look better.

This was a perfect choice for basement sound system for both Audio/Video sound for our new media center. This works well with any Sony TV and the new Smart TVs. The size of the unit is large and had to adjust shelves in new media cabinate to accommodate the unit. The surround sound for 5.1 works well with the Yamaha speaker system.

difficult to understand directions. I still can't get this stereo to comunicate with my tv and produce sound. It works great with bluray and dish conected to it and also as a stand alone. I have the non wifi yamaha model and it works great I just figured a few more bells and whistles would be nice. Maybe less is more.

This unit replaced an old Blu Ray/surround system that worked well and came in 1 box, while the features were handy, it was weak in sound delivery. Enter the world of components. Wow, what a difference. I started with the Yamaha RX V 479 after a lot of research. The unit connected with other components easily and after a bit I was able to connect the wireless, there are several way to achieve this, my first 2 attempts failed then success. I am still working on the wireless features, there are many but I don't require most. I went with Polk Audio for the speakers and sub woofer. I am not an audiophile but my 15' X 20' den was transformed to a wonderful place to enjoy everything from a movie with theater quality sounds to AC/DC vids at concert levels. I love my new sound system and it started with Yamaha.

Great receiver, not as easy to set up as my last, but great sound. I love that it has bluetooth, wifi, etc. I did have an issue, but found it was with a speaker cable not the receiver itself. Looking forward to learning more about other features.

This 5.1 receiver has it all. Bluetooth, WiFI, Net Radio and best of all .... great sound! With this receiver all you need is one hmdi cable to your TV. This receiver does it all as the command center for all your audio and HD video. I can't say enough about this receiver except that Yamaha should charge more for such a well made and engineered product. Frankly, I can't believe how inexpensive it is to get such an advanced audio receiver. Nice job Yamaha!

Gapless Playback Compatibility Allows Play without Interruption
Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard.

Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality
The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity preamplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. All models have fully discrete power amplifiers that help minimize distortion. They also adopt pure independent power supplies, allowing dedicated power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heat sinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.
Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality
This AV receiver was designed with a strong focus on achieving a high level of sound clarity. It employs a discrete amplifier configuration and a low-jitter PLL circuit, which contribute to its excellent audio performance.
Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused soundstage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.
