I upgraded a 10-year-old Sony DTR-DN1010 recently plagued by "Protect" errors. I had a hard time finding something reasonably priced that offered the same 7.1 channels. Atmos was a bonus; this Yamaha offers significantly more expand-ability and features for the money!! The on-screen menu system is very intuitive and allows for both simple basic setup/functions and expanded options for fine tuning, as expected for a device designed to serve as a true home theater hub! I did not notice a discernible improvement in staging, separation, or bass over the Sony. What this does better is calibrate and customize a slew of options and reveals enhanced power in how LOUD it goes without distortion. Vocals are clearer now, especially the center channel. I hope Yamaha build quality lives up to its reputation, with lots of Sony "protect" error problems AVRs and a long run of Onkyo HDMI board failures. It is sad the days of buying a quality amplifier and expecting it to last decades are gone.

Very satisfying receiver. I used this receiver to replace a soundbar that I was unhappy with. If you are not limited on space it's worth going with a receiver to drive your home audio/home theater. I have this system set up as a 5.1.2 home theater. Works great with my Boston Acoustic Micro system, powered BA sub, two rear Yamaha MusicCast 20's. TV app's and integration is great.

Incredible receiver. This gets you 90% of everything the expensive ones do for under 500 dollars. Although you can not do 7.2.1, you can do 7.1 04 5.2.1, its got more than enough power to fill the room with a good speaker setup. Airplay works great, the built in tuning function with the mic works really well to get your space sounding great.

Not able to hook it up to our smart TV or our cable box or our new Yamaha MusicCast speaker. It is not a simple installation at all.

This Yamaha receiver replaced a Pioneer brand unit I had before, and I'm very pleased with the value of it. I'm not an AV expert by any means and found this easy to set up. Audio quality is excellent, and this unit improved the bass of my setup, so I guess my old unit was not adequate.

I upgraded from a mid-range 5.1 AVR because I had been looking around for a while and this one suddenly came on sale at a great price. I read the specs and some forum discussions and got the impression it offers exceptional sound and versatility, and after using it with various sources for a few weeks now, that's my experience as well. I use PureDirect, Straight, and a few movie sound modes in a 5.1 setup with Spotify, an Apple TV 4K and a Sony UHD player. Comparing the sound to the setup with the old AVR, listening to some favorite albums and watching some favorite movies, was like opening the curtains in a dark room and letting the sun in. The Dolby Vision/HDR pass through is convenient. Plus the on-screen menu is comprehensive and intuitive. Looking forward to adding height speakers to enjoy Dolby Atmos streams.

I'm impressed that this receiver can be used with high and speakers and makes home theater choices simple rather than a complex hit or miss operation.

I don't need all the features installed in this product, but the features I do need work great. The Auto Speaker setup works extremely well. You will need to get the full Manual from the Yamaha website to fully understand this product. The price I got this unit for make it a great buy.

Incredible receiver with great features and easy setup. I use the zone 2 function with Bluetooth to connect and stream music to separate speakers in my basement ceiling which is awesome! Highly recommend this receiver as it packs a ton of features without breaking the bank!

Yamaha receivers have been the best & I upgraded from a RX-v581 to a RX v685. I have home theater room with built in 6.1 speakers. Yamaha has dropped support for a 6.1 setup. You must either have a 5.1 or 7.1 system. SORRY YAMAHA I am returning the receiver as your new? model has regressed.

Originally with the pioneer same specs...but burned up on 4K content the first day...was defective. Had to come back to Yamaha. 4K warning any Tv internal up scaling is on...turn off in receiver...DIRECTV 4K format is bad too and does not like it. Flickers, but not 4K blue ray players. Sound is great..but I would like to see the sound format I am playing...besides the speakers on display. Should not have to go to the menu to see details. Dts or Dolby should be displayed. Has lots of sound modes the usual...but could use more bands in the speaker sound mode. Overall I am happy with it...but 4K is and definitely needs a better improved codec to function properly..so be careful with the upscale and hdmi version 1.4 and 2.2 .

The best thing about this receiver is that it is easy to program for any gender of music. The surround effects standout as paramount.

This is a fabulous upgrade to my 10-year old RX-V663. With 5 HDMI in and two HDMI out, and the much improved audio decoder support, Bluetooth and Wifi support - it's such a pleasure to use. The YPAO setup was much better with this receiver than the older receiver - especially with the powered subwoofer. Although I did not mind the unique yellow display on the older receiver, the more standard blueish white and red indicators are much better. Wifi setup was a snap, and setting it up with my iPad allowed it to get the network passcode instantly. Controllability is excellent with the app. The IR remote codes are Yamaha standard, so my Harmony remote and Alexa setup were the same - I only had to update the model with the Harmony, but it worked before that too. Power and sound quality are better - with a 5.1 system right now, I added some dialog lift to let the mains help with that and the results are great, whether watching TV or a movie. The DSP is much improved, rather than increasing the center channel before, to bring up the dialog level - now there's an explicit setting for dialog level. The DSP is absolutely amazing, but 10 years ago I was amazed at that receiver. This is my third Yamaha AV receiver and I could not be happier with this.

I do like my RX-685, but after upgrading from my Rx-773 there our a couple of things i miss terribly. first the browser web interface on my old Yamaha was a full feature unit control that did everything the phone app did, not so on the 685. Second The interface for Napster and Spotify require using your phone. I like this ability ok, But it should also allow you to run these with just the remote like the 773 did. When I am setting in the room with my system and remote in hand i should not have to find my phone to listen to these music services. I really hope this function can be added back.

Great Receiver for home surround sound & MusicCast Hub
By Yamaster
Very satisfying receiver. I used this receiver to replace a soundbar that I was unhappy with. If you are not limited on space it's worth going with a receiver to drive your home audio/home theater. I have this system set up as a 5.1.2 home theater. Works great with my Boston Acoustic Micro system, powered BA sub, two rear Yamaha MusicCast 20's. TV app's and integration is great.
Providing complete compatibility with the latest HDMI standards, this AV receiver delivers transmission of 4K video at 60 frames/second pass-through. It also supports HDR (high dynamic range) video including Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma. This provides incredible contrast, smooth tone and rich, bright colors—giving you full, high-definition enjoyment with an exceptionally realistic and natural picture quality.
Since the RX-V685 has two HDMI outputs, simultaneous connection to a TV and video projector is possible. Or you can add an additional TV in a common area like a kitchen or patio to watch the same content in two different rooms. HDMI Out 2 will carry an HDMI audio signal to the second TV to provide sound.
Built-in Wi-Fi allows for a connection with your wireless router, greatly simplifying system connections for music streaming or enjoying networked audio (PC/NAS). Bluetooth connectivity is also included to stream into your receiver or out from the receiver to another Bluetooth device such as a pair of headphones.
The RX-V685 is equipped with Bluetooth technology, making wireless operation more convenient than ever. You can stream music from the RX-V685 to Bluetooth headphones for private listening or to Bluetooth speakers. Bluetooth output has been improved, reducing lip sync delays from digital sources.
This Yamaha proprietary sound field creation technology was created by combining measured sound field data with digital signal processing. Yamaha collected sound field data from famous concert halls and music clubs around the world, utilizing its wealth of experience in the fields of concert hall design, public address, and mixing. By digitizing that vast trove of information and incorporating it into dedicated LSI devices, it effectively reproduces the acoustic spaces of those concert halls on home equipment. Immerse yourself in the astounding realism of your movies and music with this sound technology.
This technology analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.
Yamaha AV receivers feature fully discrete power amplifiers to minimize distortion and adopt independent pure power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry. They house ultra-high performance 384 kHz / 32-bit DACs, also with independent power supplies. These support in reproducing audio for high resolution sound sources without noise. Moreover, a new high sound quality IC is employed for volume control and large heat sinks suppress vibration. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.
Combine this AV receiver with the upcoming MusicCast 50 or MusicCart 20 wireless streaming speakers and enjoy the convenience of creating a home theater with wireless rear speakers in a 5.1-channel system. What's more, you get stunningly realistic sound with a clean, clutter-free setup. Easily turn your current living room into an entertainment environment where you can fully enjoy movies, music and games.
Unlock the full potential of your 4K content. Enhanced Audio Return Channel (also known as eARC) is the next generation of ARC – available in the industry-leading AV receivers from Yamaha.
eARC delivers full-resolution, multichannel audio formats such as Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD® through your existing HDMI connection, giving you the most realistic surround sound experience for immersing yourself in your favorite movies and moments.
