Two pianos, two returned

I have now had two Yamaha YDP 142 pianos in my home, both of which have had to be returned because one of the keys suddenly began to play extremely loudly no matter how softly the key was pressed. The notes that were defective were different on each model, the first one developed after about 4 months, the second after just 10 days! I have now had the inconvenience of disassembling and returning two very heavy pianos. This kind of problem is completely unacceptable, and that it should have happened on both the pianos I have received tells me that this was not an isolated case. The only way I could play the piano was to turn the weighting off, then the key played the same as the others. It happened on all the voices that use the weighting feature. I am giving Yamaha one more chance by purchasing the higher S51 model, but if this does the same thing I shall be MOST UNHAPPY.

Extremely frustrating and disappointing

We ordered this digital piano from a Yamaha authorized dealer called Musician's Friend. When it arrived by mail, a full third of the keys would not play! It was like they were mechanically loose, so that if you tried to push them, it was like they were crunchy and would be very difficult to push down and raise back up. Clearly a defective product. Musician's Friend paid to have it sent back and sent us another one. This time it had the same problem, except with five of the keys instead of roughly 25 of them. So we sent it back again, obviously frustrated. A third one arrived...same problem! Different keys, but again about five of them. At this point, we wanted to contact Yamaha directly, since the problem was clearly originating with Yamaha and the company we had bought it from, Musician's Friend, was just shipping out what they had received from Yamaha. The customer service agent's response at Yamaha was almost unbelievable, telling us that the problem was "clearly" a shipping problem because they inspect the pianos for quality insurance when they are made...in Indonesia! As if there still could not be a manufacturing problem, or an issue with Yamaha's shipping (rather than Musician's friend). It was pretty clear to me that they have a line or at least a batch of pianos that needs a recall, but they refused to admit it. We then looked on Amazon and noticed that this piano has had similar problems for others, so it wasn't just us. Finally, our problem was resolved by upgrading to the Yamaha Arius-162, which Musician's Friend graciously did for us at a great discount. I can't say it would be worth the $500 more MSRP, but at least it actually does work, unlike our experience with 3 Arius 142's.

It is terrible and a hassle

I bought the piano for 2 days. I set it up, turned it on and tested fine on the first day. I tried to turn it on the second day. I am not able turn on again. Once I released the power button and the power light goes off. I tried reset back to the factory default setting and disable auto power off function. And I don't have any luck to turn it on again. This is terrible for an expansive instrument.

The Perfect Machine

I am 76 and have been taught professionally in the classics. Ergo: I have been playing for 70 years and have owned several pianos including an acoustic grand piano. My considered opinion is that the Arius YP142 is simply a magnificent piano with a sound equal to, if not better than acoustic. We now live in a small unit and this piano just fits beautifully without being conspicuous or too large for the room. Well done Yamaha - I just love Yamaha products and also when I was younger owned two Yamaha motor scooters, first a 50cc then traded up to a 250cc. Great machines. Personally, I always recommend Yamaha above all others. My heartiest congratulations on production of your fine range of pianos also, I must say, sensibly priced and within the realms of most people's desires and price range.

A beginners dream

I bought this to learn on. I've only fooled around on real pianos, and to me this feels ands sounds like the real thing. Im thrilled to have it in my home. All the user interface parts are very high quality.
