Q&A

Questions & Answers

Shopper : will this lens function lin auto exposure on my D7100?LITAI L : Yes, auto exposure works. Only focus needs manual operation. You can consider to replace the split focusing screen if you have the non-autofocus 35 mm SLR experience before.ERROL B : Yes, autoexposure is enabled & works fine. Focus, on the other hand, is manual (&silky-smooth).BRIAN W : I own the D7000. Yes, no problem.GERALD B. K : I can't imagine there would be a problem. I've only used it on a D80 and a D700. It has to be manually focused, but auto exposure was never an issue. It is such a great piece of glass that it will ruin you for all others. And you can't beat the price. Good luck.
Shopper : Does this lens have Autofocus for Nikon D800?RICHARD A : NoGERALD B. K : No, the lens won't autofocus for any camera. Don't let it bother you though. Considering the results you'll get, you won't mind using the arrows/ball (>o<)focusing help in your viewfinder to do your focusing.DAVID C : No auto focus here! Manual focus only, but the little green focus indicator that you can see in the view finder of your D800 will still work with these lenses.MALIK R : You are spot on Lucus...this works the same on D800E as well. Now all my photo are shot with confidence and speed.MALIK R : Hi Mr or Ms Shopper, This is and will be one of your best lens to invest! No this is not auto focus, but the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 is the best for any of Nikon system. I also have a D800E and the Zeiss lens beats all my Nikor lenses like my 50mm 1.4G AF (I use this lens for indoor sports like Boxing, Basketball). I use the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 for Portraits, Landscape, Architecture... I solely use the Nikor 50mm 1.4g for Sporting events and I love it. I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best. I'm now waiting for the new Zeiss 85mm 1.4 Distagon (version two) which maybe released sometime in 2014... Thank youJAMES H : No it does not auto focus, but a fine piece of glass.LUCAS S : This is a manual lens without auto focus. All other functions are enabled. When an object is in focus, the camera assist focus will be solid green (for d5000). Out of focus objects will result in a blinking green light. I have no experience with Nikon D800. Hope this helps.DAVID R : Sorry to say but it is a completely manual lens that means that there is nothing auto about this lens. I hope this helps.ERROL B : No, it is a manual focus lens. Absolutely superb lens.
Avtar K : Can I use it with Nikon D800...??BRIAN W : Yes. Manual Focus Only.GERALD B. K : I use a D700, so I'm not speaking from experience, but Nikon has been using the same bayonet interface for decades. I can't imagine there would be any reason why they'd obsolete all their earlier lenses by changing it on the D800. I'm sure you can use it. Be warned though that this lens is so good that it'll spoil you for all others. And, by the way, manually focusing is no big deal. It'll be second nature in a couple of days. INGRID M : Absolutely! Remember that this lense does not auto focus but you are going to be able to change the aperture on camera.Michael O : Yes. All features will work properly as if it were a Nikon Lens, except auto focus. The lens is manual focus only but will work properly with the D800 rangefinder focus confirmation feature (the green led's in the view finder).JAMES H : Yes, and the results are stunning. That said, it is manual focus, but I mainly shoot on a tripod, I actually fine tuning the picture. I get a kick with this lens shot wide open in low light. Good luck.ERROL B : Yes, absolutely. Note that it is a manual focus lens. Exposure is automatic

Fantastic lenses

I'm a DP/Director/Editor and I work mainly on fashion films and commercials. I shoot mainly with cine glass, however I own this Zeiss 50mm and the Distagon 21mm and both lenses are powerhouses. Really fast at f1.4, a SUPER smooth focus throw and a really great image regardless of what camera you use these with. I've had mine for ages and they've seen action on everything from a 5D mkii to Alexa Mini and a bunch in between. I would recommend picking one up if you're interested in investing in good glass but don't want to spring for a top tier cine lens kit. I would take these over any Xeen cine lens, any set of Canon or Zeiss CP2 PL mount lenses also. The build is sturdy, the image is sharp without being too digital looking, and I've found the set handles skin tones well also. I probably won't ever sell my set because of how great they are.

Awesome lens

I bought this lens about one month ago and I fell in love with it. I was looking for a semi-pro portrait lens for my Nikon d7200 and eager to try a Zeiss product. Beside some initial difficulties with the manual focus (nothing really challenging though), every single shot shows great colors and sharpness! Even if it has not been tested in every condition yet, it looks like a solid and durable lens. I suggest the buying to everyone who wants to step up from a beginner level to an higher one. It is really worth it!

MicroContrast is Stunning! Focusing Stellar!

I purchased this lens for use with my Nikon d810. Manual focusing on this lens is a breeze. I recommend the dk17m, however, to magnify subject matter, especially those without manual focusing experience. Straight out camera without adjustments, the micro-contrast is stunning. This lens offers a its own unique personality to images captured with it. Every photographer should have a 50mm lens, & yes this is it!

Excellent on D800

The lens is superb. It is well built, focusing is smooth and accurate, excellent color rendition and sharp; everything a lens such as this is supposed to be. It is manual focus so if auto focus is preferred be aware of this. I checked that I am a hobbyist but I have been a photographer for more than 50 years and consider myself and advanced photographer. I have also owned and used many different 50s. I love this one.

Sadly, a bit out dated

I tested this on my D810 against my Nikkor 50mm D and 24 - 120mm f4 zoom, and my 45mm Nikkor pancake lens. Sadly this lens had the worse CA of the lot. At this point in time anyone interested in a manual 50mm for digital use should be looking at the Zeiss Milvus range as this lens design is outdated for digital.

Sharpness

Besides having "pop," this lens is quite sharp. The following is an enlarged picture of people on the east side of the East River in Queens taken with the Zeiss f1.4/50mm Planar lens from the Manhattan (west) side of the river.

Pro Quality, 3D and Rich Color

For all the hype about Zeiss colors and 3-D, I use my Nikon D90 with Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar T* ZF.2 to take some pictures, it is so Pro Quality, 3-D and Rich Color, I love this Zeiss lens.

great videography lens

great lens for videography use. Very smooth focus ring. However, for photography use the f-stop from f1.4-2.0 is not very sharp and would not be suitable for pictures sizes larger than 5x7 unless further editing is done inside Photoshop. At f2.8 and above the clarity is very crisp especially at f3.5. overall great lens.

Pro Quality

This equipment is not for every body, is just for pros. Warning, this lens is extremely precise and extremely sharp, if you don't like quality don't buy any of this optics, because no matter what lighting situation you are working in this lens will always give you quality and the results will always be stunning.

Shoot Like a Pro

Since it doesn't autofocus, you need to buy the split focusing screen to have any chance of getting a focused picture. Even then, it's 50::50 except in bright light with sharp contrasts to work with. However, it is absolutely top quality and makes one jealous of the quality of glass pros use, especially at sports events. The bottom line is that there is a difference, a big difference, between the mundane lenses we generally use and something like this.

what camera lenses should be

The fit and finish on this lens is fantastic, it feels like good camera lenses used to feel. There is no plastic on the outside of the lens at all, and probably none on the inside judging by how this little jem weighs. Manual focusing with this is no problem, it really needs a focusing screen with some sort of a assist like a microprism etc... though. The focusing ring is very smooth with no slop or inconsistencies in it's motion. If this lense is used correctly, it is wonderfully sharp and renders images very naturally and beautifully, in a way that alot of other 50mm lenses I've used don't. Alot of people trash this lense for "not being sharp wide open"-this lense isn't meant to be used for making perfect reproductions of newspapers and test charts but rather to make beautiful images.

Of limited use to me

Great quality lens, but too heavy for my own usage and does not permit auto-focusing with Canon EOS 40D camera.

best lens i ever head

Is the best Lens i ever had. I'm using Canon 5d MKII and it gives incredible bokeh and movies in low light are awesome

The ZEISS ZF.2 with F bayonet for digital SLRs. Thanks to its electronic interface (CPU), these new ZEISS lenses support all-important operations such as the automatic exposure for shutter priority, aperture priority and program modes. The CPU also supports manual exposure settings, including those for camera casings that are not AI-compatible. Since the lens now transmits the EXIF data such as manufacturer, date, metering system and exposure settings, photographers no longer need to set the parameters manually. These quicker and faster handling capabilities of the ZF.2 lenses are especially useful under hectic shooting conditions.

ZEISS lenses truly come into their own in situations that demand extreme photographic creativity and maximum image quality. Carl Zeiss' fixed focal length lenses are known for their high light sensitivity and precise manual handling, leaving the photographer in full control. The new ZF.2 series will be especially interesting for photo enthusiasts who value creative, high-quality images combined with the comfort of automatic settings.

Zeiss 50mm F/1.4 Features

  • High-Speed Lens: Impressive photographs captured in low light always begin with a fast lens for a system or SLR camera. Because, a fast, high-performance lens captures as much light as possible.
  • Ideal aperture with nine blades: Photographers want to guide the observer through the image. Minimal depth of focus is often used as a design element. This keeps the background intentionally blurred to keep the attention of the observer on the main subject.
  • Excellent image quality: The range of ZEISS T* lenses offers the highest possible standards in terms of performance, reliability and, of course, image quality.
  • Elaborate stray light reduction: For example, all lens elements are coated with the famous ZEISS T*½ anti-reflective coating. Additionally, a jet black special paint is applied by hand to all lens element edges to ensure that reflections are prevented from the start.
  • High-quality all metal mounts Noticeable quality and high value stability qualify ZEISS lenses for decades of intense use. The high-quality craftsmanship of the all-metal mounts, the easy-to-grip metal focus and aperture ring and the robust front bayonet and filter threads ensure an amazing photographic experience.
