Questions & Answers

LAURENCE S : I have a Contax IIIA with the Sonnar f 1.5. the lens is starting to discolor between elements, and I have been told that this is unreparable. The bayonet mounting of your advertised replacement looks different from my lens. Will your lens fit my Contax IIIA?ANDREW R : Unfortunately no, the Leica "M" bayonet is not compatible with the Contax IIIa.
Shopper : Any info on the Contessa version by Zeiss Ikon? Thanks.ANDREW R : Not sure what you are asking, the Contessa has been out of production since 1971. This particular lens should work with most Leica and Zeiss Ikon "M" mount rangefinder cameras.
David W : Is this version optimised for f1.5 or 2.8? Thank you.Jackson D : Mine was optimized for 2.8. It was purchased in 2018. (verified via test shots). The focus shift is real, but it easy to compensate for (just lean forward an inch or so or focus on the ears instead of eyes). I did test shots with a measuring tape and confirmed the focus is 3 inches towards the camera at f1.5. For portraits, this lens is to die for when you nail focus.

Good But Not Great

A great lens but it would be nice to know where max aperture focus is set for, or Zeiss should at least make them all consistent.

Love it

This is a lens that you either or love or hate. I personally love it. I use it on a leica m3 and just deal with the focus shift (which isn't hard to to). The rendering is fantastic event at f1.4

Beautifully made lens, high quality with amazing images

Wow. My A7R II doesn't want to part with it. The images from this combination for portraits are quite stunning wide open. This is taking advantage of the field curvature to produce this amazing portraits. No wonder Zeiss didn't change the original design from the 1930s, just using modern t-star costing. Magical By the way the field flattens wonderfully when stopped down and gets sharp edge to edge for landscapes too. Love the small size, I use it with the TAP adapter for autofocus and also the voigtlander adapter close focus adapter for manual

A true art lens.

Character, classic glow wide open, very sharp stopped down. Built solid. Small. Using this lens on a Sony 7R, so no focus shift issues for me.

Nice, but you get what you pay for

This is an outstanding lens for the price, but I encountered some difficulty getting it to perform. There is a focus shift on the lens that made it difficult to use at wide open (f/1.5). The lens I received was calibrated for spot-on rangefinder coupling at f/2.8 (admittedly a mistake on Zeiss' part). I sent mine back to the factory in Germany, where they re-calibrated it (to spot-on at f/1.5, not 2.8) for free after some paperwork. Now, it is very nice, but it doesn't get fully sharp until somewhere between f/2 and f/2.8. Overall, a very nice lens that compares favorably to some of my vintage Leitz lenses.

Excellent build quality & superior optic

I chose this lens for the basic reasons: 1. Low-light capable 2. Extremely sharp wide-open 3. Aperture increments 1/3 stop clicks 4. Zeiss build quality, guarantee, reputation 5. Price was significantly lower than Leica equivalent 6. My previous experiences with Zeiss optics have been perfect! My only negative is the Zeiss hood is relatively expensive...but it fits & works perfectly!!
