Not cheap, but it's all metal and locks and, in addition to performing its shading duties, protects the front lens from damage.

I can't say whether it really prevents flare, since it's not a problem with this lens anyway. I bought it mainly as additional protection for the lens, since I don't keep a cap on it when carrying my camera. Quick to attach / detach via bayonet fitting. Won't fit over step-up ring, so if you use filters larger than 49mm, you're out of luck. When attached to lens, prevents use of smaller lens pouches. Difficult to attach / remove a lens cap while in place, but why would you want to? It already protects the lens or filters from bumps when deployed anyway.

OEM shade for the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm ZM f1/5. Quickly mounts to front lens bayonet. If you use a step up or step down ring to attach filters, you won't be able to attach this shade at the same time. Because of its size, I have to store it in my bag separately from the lens if I want to keep the lens in a small neoprene lens pouch. Expensive compared to non-OEM shades.

I purchased this hood to protect my front lens and for its ability to block out unwanted light from hitting the lens. Also... it looks great!
