Review Summary

This is my first all-manual lens. It takes some practice, and it forces you to shoot in a more manual fashion. You're not going to get every shot, especially moving subjects (I'm sure I'll get better at this over time), and especially when you have the aperture fairly open. I just shot street photography for three days in NYC and mainly shot from the hip at f/8 or f/11 and used the focus range markers to get mostly everything >8-10 ft away in focus. When you do get the shot, it is beautiful and you feel that you truly own it. On top of that, it's built like a tank and is a piece of art in itself. I really enjoy it (and find myself using it more often than my Sony 35 f/2.8 w/ AF).

The lens is easy to focus since it is mechanically controlled. It has good color rendition and the bokeh is smooth. I like this better than working with any of the auto focus options, since I do a lot of video where I want good manual focus capabilities.

I would have given this lens 4.5 stars or higher if there weren't such noticeable barrel distortion. It's totally corrected by a profile in Lightroom but once you notice it, you keep seeing it, particularly in the viewfinder. Images, especially on the 42Mpx sensor of the A7Rii, are tack-sharp with fantastic contrast and colour. The bokeh is pleasing, flowing and very satisfactory, particularly with shorter subject distances (closest focusing distance around 29cm, 11.3") Because it's manual-only you ideally need to be in shooting situations where you have the time and sufficient light to get the focus. The time parameter to get the shot is helped by using the distance scale on the focusing ring first and then focus peaking and magnification make getting sharp images in short order a breeze. I love the aperture ring and wish more modern lenses came with this function. It helps to get the shot you want and I find connects you to the lens more directly than using one of the dials; also, having an aperture ring frees up a dial for another function! I prefer using manual lenses on my Sony A7Rii and the combination with the Zeiss Loxia 35mm (and the 50mm too) is a perfect match. It's small, light and always ready to get the shot you want. Because the lens is manual focus only the only situation in which I've wished for autofocus has been when shooting something that's moving quickly. This is more of an art lens I feel than a photojournalism lens, and choose my subjects accordingly. I have been more than pleased with the results.

excellent all around lens

The lens is easy to focus since it is mechanically controlled. It has good color rendition and the bokeh is smooth. I like this better than working with any of the auto focus options, since I do a lot of video where I want good manual focus capabilities.
When seeking a versatile, high-quality lens for your Sony E mount camera, look no further than the Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 Biogon T* Lens. This compact, all-around lens boasts a bright f/2 maximum aperture, making it perfect for a multitude of photography genres, including travel, landscape, portraiture, and night photography.
The Loxia line of lenses is renowned for its unique feature that allows users to deactivate the 'click' of the aperture ring. This is achieved by simply turning a screw on the lens mount, a tool for which is conveniently supplied. This feature is particularly appealing to creative photographers and videographers who desire seamless transitions between aperture settings.
Designed specifically for full-frame compact system cameras, this manual focus lens is an ideal match for Sony E-mount cameras, including the Sony a7 series. The 35mm focal length provides a field of view equivalent to the human eye on a 35mm camera, resulting in a natural and intuitive perspective.
Lightweight, compact, and highly adaptable, the Zeiss Loxia 35mm lens excels in a variety of settings. Whether you're capturing street scenes, expansive landscapes, intimate portraits, or spontaneous moments, this lens is your perfect photographic companion.
For videographers, the Loxia lenses offer the unique DeClick feature, allowing for smooth aperture adjustments, eliminating unwanted brightness differences during panning. This feature can also be adapted to other video systems of suitable size.
The Zeiss Loxia 35mm lens offers a large rotation angle for precise focusing, with changes immediately visible in the viewfinder. The high-quality focusing mechanism moves smoothly without play, supporting intuitive interaction with the focal plane. The precise engraving in meter and feet, along with the depth of focus scale, provide additional support for manual focusing.
This lens also features virtually distortion-free optics, ensuring straight lines are reproduced accurately, even when not passing through the image center. This is achieved through elaborate optical designs at all focal lengths.
Constructed with a high-grade full-metal casing, this lens is built to last. The focus and aperture rings are made of metal, providing a grippy and durable surface for adjustments. A special sealing ring on the bayonet also protects the interface between the camera and the lens.
Optimized for film and sensors up to full 35mm format (24 x 36 mm), the Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 Biogon T* Lens is a reliable choice for both digital Sony Alpha cameras and traditional film cameras. Experience the creative possibilities of 'classic' photography with the added benefits of modern lens technology.
