Absolutely lovely to use. It's reasonably sharp, smooth and generally built incredibly. Well corrected and very sharp, although not quite up to snuff compared to a Voigtlander APO-Lanthar. At similar new prices, it really depends on your needs. I picked this up due to the sealing and an aggressively affordable used price. You could do a lot worse for glass, but you could also do better with your money nowadays. Zeiss level build quality, but nothing truly special to make it worth the massive price bump over apochromatic laowa lenses. Beautiful images and generally wonderful to work with, it's dragged down by the generally high cost. Still, I'm glad to have it in my kit for a walkaround landscape lens.

The appeal of this lens is not chart-topping specs, but it's beautiful rendering - a combination of color, contrast, sharpness and smooth transitions of color and tone. I own a lot of lenses, modern and vintage, and love them all (I've sold the ones I didn't love so much), but the Loxia 50mm is probably the one I most look forward to using. It encourages me to be at the top of my game because I know that if I am, the results will be worth it. And a thank-you to Adorama for the excellent service.

The Loxia 50mm is the unique lens that is ideal for projects like mine in environmental portraiture. The lens is manual focus giving one the ability to control the incredible lens capacity for depth of field.

Ah, the Loxia 50 mil.Full of all the pop and colour that Zeiss is known for. The Loxia 50 is a great walk around lens. Small and compact, but all metal and glass it feels and handles like a dream. Save for the aperture ring. The only Loxia that does not have a frustrating aperture ring is the 85 mil, but if you are like me and spend most of your time shooting wide open, it won't be an issue. The only downside is its speed. Had to buy the Voigtlander 40mil for night shooting with a decent ISO. Still, highly recommended (the voigt does not have the same pop, but is really good on its own).

I bought it used on Adorama about 3 months ago, and recently I been encountering problem with magnifier when I use F2.0, that the magnifier doesn't stay zoomed in properly, which it is very very irritating. And I did checked the camera with my other manual lenses and my A7rii has no problem. However, I do love this lens, the build-quality is sexy. Yet the problem with my loxia is really makes me sad.

If you've got an A7 series camera, there's a good chance that you were considering size when you got it. What I hope you also considered, is the potentially superb manual focus experience. This 50mm completes the the A7 series like no other. It's one of the smallest lenses you can get, but nothing on it feels dainty or fragile. It's solid and I've taken mine out in the rain without any trouble. Plus, the Loxia 50mm communicates with the camera, so you can get EXIF data and a MF assist which automatically zooms in the EVF when you turn the focus ring. Admittedly the latter can be a bit confusing at first, but you can turn it off or learn to use it. I keep it on most of the time. Optically, it's sharp, but so are a lot of other lenses. What makes the Loxia 50mm special is its color rendition and microcontrast. The Zeiss 3D pop is strong on this one. There are few lenses which offer as much richness of color. Even black and white photographs sing. I have no doubt that it will be able to keep up with many generations of future sensors. On speed, it may not be it's not be an F/1.4 lens but to get optics this good in this small a package, physics demands trade-offs. The bokeh is lovely, regardless. It's not buttery gaussian haze bokeh (you really need a telephoto lens for that anyway). It's got movement and character, but not in a harsh or distracting way. It's an essential part of the lens' character. Few lenses balance of character and precision as well as the Loxia 50mm. I highly recommend this lens.

Being a manual focus lens, it takes a getting use to. However, it offers a distinct operation feeling and picture rendition which strongly holds it own against auto focus lens. I found the focusing ring smooth and the F-stops well functiional calibrated. So far, the picture quality is commendably Zeiss standard. It's easily among the top three 50mm lens in my estimate and the best manual focus lens thus far!

The Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 Planar T* Lens for Sony E Mount is a compact, flexible all-rounder with bright f/2 maximum aperture suitable for a wide range of photography applications, including travel, landscapes, portraiture, night photography and more. The main feature of the Loxia range of lenses is the ability to deactivate the 'click' of the aperture ring by turning a screw on the lens mount (tool supplied to enable this), this will appeal to the creative individuals who want to capture stills and videos. The 50mm f2 is a manual focus lens designed specifically for use with full-frame compact system cameras that feature a Sony E-mount.
Zeiss Loxia 2/50 - The flexible all-rounder
A 50mm lens was legendary photographer Cartier Bresson's favorite. The reason is simple: this focal length provides the equivalent field of view of the human eye on a 35mm camera, which makes for a very natural perspective. Compact, light and extremely flexible, the Zeiss Loxia 2/50 shines in the most varied of applications. Regardless of whether it's for street photography, landscapes, portraits or spontaneous discoveries, the Zeiss Loxia 2/50 is the ideal companion for photographic and filmic exploration. Zeiss Loxia lenses were specifically designed for Sony a7 cameras. This means that they can make the most of the mirrorless, full frame system, while giving you all the creative possibilities of classic' photography with manual focus at the same time. The Zeiss Loxia lenses also provide everything you need to shoot high quality video, such as the unique DeClick feature for smooth adjustment of the aperture.
DeClick feature
One completely new feature of the Loxia lens is that you can 'declick' the aperture's locking mechanism using a tool (supplied) and an adjustment screw on the bayonet surface. This means that for video applications, you can smoothly eliminate any unwanted differences in brightness as you pan the camera. This feature can also be used with other video systems whose size makes them suitable for adaption.
Precise manual focus
Manually focusing a lens means controlling the image result from your fingertips. A good ergonomic design makes all the difference. Zeiss lenses stand out with their large rotation angle which enables precise focusing. Changes are immediately visible in the viewfinder. The high-quality focusing mechanism moves smoothly without play, thus also supporting the intuitive interaction with the focal plane. The precise engraving in meter and feet and the depth of focus scale provide additional support for manually focusing.
Virtually distortion-free optics
Dramatic perspectives and a view from extraordinary image angles - Zeiss lenses open up new composition possibilities. Distortion would disrupt the composition because straight lines, whose image does not go through the image center, would be reproduced with a curved shape. This annoying effect is accordingly and largely compensated through elaborate optical designs at all focal lengths.
High-grade full-metal casing
Tangible quality that holds its value is what qualifies Zeiss lenses for decades of hard use. A precision-engineered full-metal casing, grippy focus and aperture rings made of metal and a tough front bayonet and filter screw assure stunning photographic results. A special sealing ring on the bayonet also protects the interface between the camera and the lens.
Full frame compatible
Zeiss lenses are suitable for digital Sony Alpha cameras and have been optimized for film and sensors up to full 35 mm format (24 x 36 mm).
