Shopper : Would this be good to record live instrumental performances - either myself alone on guitar or my band?KENT P : I use my Zoom H4n mainly as a 4ch recorder fed from a mixer. The sound quality is very good for the price point. It is a very convenient and reliable unit. I have owned mine since 2010.
The onboard mics are also good. That being said, the sound quality depends on the proximity of the recorder to the sound source, the ambient noise of the environment and the acoustics of the room. As with any mic, if you can control those factors you will be very pleased with the Zoom H4n. I highly recommend it to low budget users.
I have not used the RC-4 remote.
KentJACK FOSTER M : I think it would be great. … Remember, it can record 4 distinct tracks. … Two of the tracks will be from the built in stereo mice, but you can also add two external mics, and then you can balance each track in your production software on your computer. …ADAM B : The H4n is a pretty versatile device. It can record via the built in stereo microphone--which works pretty well, or two XLR inputs for using higher quality microphones. This unit would work well to record solo music, but may not be ideal for getting good, quality audio without plugging additional microphones in via the XLR inputs.KARLIE V : I think one of the strengths of this unit are its internal microphones. Shopper : Is this device a good fit for Macintosh computer? Thanks in advanceSTEVE J : I purchased this item from Adorama about a year ago. There is a disk that comes with the kit that captures all the data (and is replaceable). The information transfers over perfectly. It depends what kind of mac you have, but if you have one within the last couple years there is a slot on the right of all iMacs that accepts the card to download the data. You remove the card from the mic, plug it into your mac, it shows up on the desktop of your mac, and you capture the information that way. Hope this helps!ROBERT B : This is a good fit for anything. I use it with my shoots but have found when doing a long recording, 30 minutes or more in high quality it is best to try and have it on AC power.

The built-in speaker is fine for listening, though headphones or a set of speakers is necessary for listening in stereo. The speaker on the mic is great for previewing your work.CARLOS I.
