They were in great shape. However, the adjustment knob should have been cleaned better. A wet wipe & tooth pick would have done wonders. Wish it would have come with the hard shell case that they use to have for them, as well as a neck strap. He can find a strap to fit him that he likes.

Certainly one of the finest compact binoculars available. The build quality is top notch, they feel great in the hand, and they?re much brighter than you might expect from such small glass.

It isn't often one of the big 3 clearly outdoes the other two. Certainly one or the other may take a temporary lead for best hunting or birding or etc other special use bin, but this Zeiss Victory 8x25 obliterates all competitors. I own and regularly use a dozen different 8x20 -10x25 models including Leica 8x20 Ultavid and Swarovski 8x25 and this bin is clearly superior to those two (also excellent) models. Two primary reasons, the stunning FOV and the superior ergonomics/handling. It is the same size as the Swaro but lighter. In terms of high end pocket models, unless you absolutely need a very small ultralight "shirt pocket" bin, in which case Leica 8x20 UV is the one, this Zeiss is the hands down choice. To quibble a little bit about the accessories, the case is sturdy and very well made but I can't get the binoculars to fit in the case with the strap attached, let alone with the Opticiron compact rain guard I have which fits the bin well (no lens caps are included). The elegant strap is well engineered except it is attached by 1mm threads through lugs no bigger than the eye of a needle. Doesn't seem very secure and complicates if not precludes using a different strap or even an ultra light harness. But again these are minor issues. The binocular itself is a Triumph of optical performance and handling in the 8x25 category.

Victory Pocket 8x25
Optical high performance in pocket-sized format
Whether you are strolling in the park or on a long walking tour, you can always enjoy birdwatching and observing the natural world. With this featherweight giant in pocket-sized format, the Victory Pocket offers you high-performance binoculars from Zeiss for virtually all observation situations. Thanks to their lightweight and compact format these binoculars even fit in a small jacket pocket and are so light that you will hardly know they are there.
The new Victory Pocket promise high performance in all kinds of outdoor applications. Despite their amazingly light-weight construction, their high magnification and FL-lenses with Zeiss T* multi-layer coating help them to deliver brilliant image quality. The asymmetrical folding makes it particularly compact. The LotuTec coating that ensures that water drips right off them and dirt can be removed without a trace.
Impressive optics
Zeiss T* multi-layer coating
The Victory Pocket binoculars offer you outstanding imaging performance. The field of view is surprisingly large for the compact dimensions, so you can see every movement in the surrounding area. In twilight or in the woodland, with the interplay of light and shade, the use of binoculars with low light lenses pays off. The Zeiss T* multi-layer coating ensures high transmission; in other words it lets plenty of light in. This elaborate lens coating gives you a bright and clear image even in poor light conditions.
Handy and compact
Use with one hand
The Victory Pocket binoculars fold up to save space and are designed to be used easily with one hand, which means that they are always ready to use. Simply keep them handy in your bag. You can have your compact binoculars always at hand, when out deerstalking by day or simply on an impromptu hunting field-trip.
Robust and waterproof
High-quality materials
The fact that they are always at hand enables them to be used in extreme conditions. The design of the Victory Pocket focuses in particular on the use of high-quality materials. Naturally, the binoculars are 100% waterproof and filled with nitrogen, so that even extreme changes in temperature will not cause any internal misting up. The rubber armour makes these binoculars robust and shockproof and offers the first line of protection for the high-performance optics inside.
Innovative lens coating
LotuTec coating
Water simply rolls off the lens as if from a duck's back. This is due to the LotuTec coating on the lens and eyepiece. The fact that water simply rolls off and no dirt can collect on the surface of the lenses means that you can spend less time cleaning and more time for observation.
