cool idea, not well executed

The idea behind this flash bracket is excellent, the manufacturing of the product however is sub-par. I shoot with a Nikon D300 and the bracket has a hard time staying in the horizontal position, it keeps wanting to partially rotate to the vertical position. I do not have the problems that other people have had with the shutter release pin or the hotshoe pin. My main complaints on this are the fit and finish is weak, the cords for the hotshoe and shutter release get in the way of the viewfinder occasionally and there is a severe lack of competent instructions. This bracket isn't bad for the money, considering the amount of adjustability and control you can obtain from this, and as photographers, we know it's all about the control.

I like it and I think you will too!

I use the bracket, with my Canon 400D camera and 430EX flash, for fill flash and bounce flash applications. With a couple of exceptions, I find the bracket to be well designed and manufactured. The camera mounting plate is slightly too wide to allow the battery to be changed without removing or at least loosening the plate. The bracket is advertised as being able to be used right or left handed,i.e., with the handle either on the right or left. This is true, however, with the handle on the left the flash points slightly downward which is fine but with the handle on the right the flash points slightly upward. Being able to use the flash with the handle, and therefore the shutter release, on the right was a selling point for me because I naturally want to operate my zoom lenses with my left hand. This isn't a problem when doing bounce flash and I'm sure I will get used to switching hands to work lenses but I found the description a tad misleading. Switching between landscape and portrait is a breeze and I am generally very pleased with the bracket.

regarding the elusive lock...

This bracket showcases some very good engineering, however, there are a few problems: 1. To echo one earlier review, the release pin of the hot shoe cable is tiny ( maybe 1/16" x >1/32" ) and it is tricky and painful to finesse in the heat of the moment. 2. There IS a lock for the flip mechanism - it swings out from the bottom of the handgrip and, with a round pin, simply holds the slide in the rotated position. It is elusive, as it is not indicated in any way on the packaging. I actually only learned that it was a lock from RPS Studio directly. 3. The mounting plate is "universal", but does not allow me to access the battery compartment while the plate is mounted, so I modified the plate by removing ~1/4" from one end of the plate with a compound miter saw with carbide blade. This worked wonders and I am quite happy with the results. 4. The most serious problem is that for an unknown reason my Canon Speedlight 580EX loses synchronization with the camera at some points. I have not been able to determine the cause of this. In order to combat this, I disconnect/reconnect the flash cables from the flash and hot shoe as well as the shutter release cable. I have had mixed results. This was not a pleasant situation to find myself in during a fashion show shoot for a client... after a couple times of this, I put the bracket away and shot with the flash mounted to the hot shoe with no problem. While I have encountered problems with this bracket (the most significant being the synch issue), I can't for certain say that the issue is with the bracket or cable(s) or something I am doing. I have only used it on two weddings and a fashion show so far. I haven't given up on it, because it is a beautifully crafted bracket with lots of potential. I would still recommend this to a friend and hope that (s)he had better luck with it.

Nice Bracket but not for the Canon 20D

The bracket is decently constructed, it is very simple to use. Unfortunately the website does not state clearly but the shutter release will not work with all EOS style cameras. It will not work with the EOS 20D and I assume the 30D either. You will need to order the EOS-1 style for the 20D. The rotating mechanism also does not appear to lock and although it is stiff enough to hold position this may be a concern after normal wear and tear cause the unit to become loose. Also the release pin for the flash cord is small and one must use a little force to get it to disengage so it is a little rough on the fingers. I have not yet used it in the field so I won't know more till later. Otherwise for the money I think the bracket is well constructed and worth the money spent.

Not as flexible as I had hoped

This product shows great promise, and I love the concept - except: I like to use the grip right handed, and although it is supposed to be left or right, becuase of the angle of the top flash bar which is intended to direct the flash down by a few degrees, I have not worked out how to reconfigure for right handed use. The 90 degree rotating platform does not have a lock, instead relying on friction to hold it in the portrait or landscape position. This works well on small lenses, but as you increase the overall weight of camera and body, the bracket no longer holds the camera in either position. Lastly, on my unit, the cable into the hot shoe is not firmly attached to the shoe itself. The shrouding is coming away (this was as it was delivered) so I all the strain is now on the small wires. I ought to return it, but don't really want the hassle. On the positive side, the shutter release is excellent, the grip very comfortable, and the unit generally well manufactured apart from the cable issue mentioned above. Using this bracket has eliminated the red eye and shadows that I was suffering from.
