Questions & Answers

JAMES E : I am in the market for this Olympus 50-200mm f2.8 3.5 SWD ED lens. I would like to know at what length does the telephoto lens function between f2.8 and f3.5 take place, 50 mm to 150mm?ORRI J : It goes as follows: 3 at about 65 3.1 at about 75 3.2 at about 90 3.3 at about 110 3.4 at about 145 3.5 at about 190JONATHAN H : I am not sure that I understand the question. But I have been very satisfied with this lens even at 200mm in low light.ALBERT R : BTW, I love the lens. AlALBERT R : Hi Jim, The apputure goes up from 2.8 to 2.9 at about 58mm and so on until it reaches the 200 mm at 3.5. Hope this helps. AlLOUIS C : 50mm = 2.8 100mm= 3.2 200mm = 3.5 This is from the olympus site so just before 100mm maybe 70mm should start to change the site was not specific.
ANITA M : Does this lens fit the Olympus E-M1 camera with or without an adaptor ring?ERIC H : you need an olympus four thirds to micro four thirds adapter. Both olympus and panasonic make them. An example one is the dust and drip proof mmf-3 from olympus.DALE P : Yes it does, WITH an adaptor ring. And it works great! This is my favorite combo, I use it all the time!DENNIS M : Yes, this lens will fit onto the E-M1 with the Olympus MMF-3 adapter. I have an E-M1 camera with this lens and adapter. The lens and adapter works and performs very well with the E-M1JONATHAN H : This fits the E400, 500 600 series. I believe that there is an adapter that allows one to use the lens with the micro four thirds cameras.SHREEKANT T : To my knowledge you have to use adaptor , poss ibly MMF-3 to use on micro 4/3 camera bodyDAN S : Olympus advertises and reviews have confirmed that the 4/3 lenses, including the 50-200 will work with the E-M1. I believe that Olympus makes two adapters which only differ from one another in that one is splash and dust proof. I do not believe that there are any lens elements in the adapter. It is only an extension tube to compensate for the shorter distance from the front mount to the focal plane in the E-M1. The E-M1 is also reported to have two focusing systems, one of which is deal for use with 4/3 lenses such as the 50-200.MICHAEL W : I believe it would need an adapter. This is for a 4/3s camera, not a Micro 4/3s camera.HUAJUN Z : A adaptor is must have.LOUIS C : You do need an adaptor 4-3rds to m.4-3rd the lens then will be fully functional with E-M1.
Shopper : How this lens works with E-5?PETER D : With an adapter it works well. The auto focus is much slower than lenses made for micro 4/3 cameras. It is of course a larger and heaver lens than other lenses for the M-5 but it is an F/2.8 and the adapter makes it a 100 to 400.ROBERTO B : I used this lens with my e-510, but I use it with a tripod.DENNIS M : This lens will work great with the E-5. It's fast and sharp. It's a great lens for all Olympus slr's.DAN S : I have an E620 and no experience with the E-5. However, as the lens is quite heavy, I would expect it to balance quite well with the E-5. The lens is super fast focusing and incredibly sharp and a pleasure to use, either hand held or on a tripod. Works superbly well with the 1.4X teleconverter.LOUIS C : I have an E30 and E520 and the lens works very well. So I would say it will work with the E5 and the E30 is just under the E5. It is heavy and I put a quick release on the foot but orient it 90 degrees but that my depend what kind of tripod head you need. Other than that it focuses very fast.LEWIS D : Hello: I have nothng but praise for the 50-200 swd. However, I have only used it on the E-620. Try to contact an owner who has used this lens with the mm3 adapter. LewFRANCIS O : They were made for each other. I have one for sale in great condition. Check Boston craigslist.KELLY K : I love this lens with the E-5! Sharp auto focus. It is heavy so hand holding can be tough. Great for action, wildlife, even macro. I highly recommend this lens addition to your E-5.

Great weather resistant lens at about the 1/3 of the new 40-150 pro

So far I think this is a great value for performance, a little more reach than the 40-150 great IQ, if there is a downs side it would be the size and that it like the phase detection auto focus on the em1 for focusing better. On the em5 MK II unless you are focusing on a super contrast area it reall hunts but when locked on it is sharp as the em1.

Great Buy!

I'm thrilled beyond words with my latest acquisiton from Adorama. This is the first used item I've every purchased. Outstanding performance and value - saved me a lot. I suggest that anyone interested in first rate used camera equipment, check out Adorama. I also suggest going for the highest rating on the item. Furthermore, the extended warranty is a steal of a deal.

Excellent 4/3 Lens

Excellent quality and value for a 4/3 body. Not as fast to focus using Micro 4/3 converter, but focal length makes up for this.

Just received it... absolutely awesome!

I just recieved this glass by UPS. I bought it used and cannot see any signs that it has been used. Whoever had it took very good care of it. I bought it along with a new 12-60 f2.8 and both will be mounted to an E510(kit) that I bought from Adorama I don't know how many years ago. Both lenses were carefully packed and are in excellent condition. I've gathered some really decent shots with the kit lenses and had considered moving up to a larger sensor, but since I'm not making my living with a camera I decided to make the move to better lenses. I really love my 510 and the addition of these lenses should extend the life of my 510 by many years. I'm strictly an amateur and have been told I have a good eye. I don't know that to be the case, but I shoot what I like, what appeals to me. What appealed to me was the versatility of the 510 and the enthusiasm of Olympus owners overall. I haven't had a chance to shoot these lenses, except for a couple of indoor shots, but I'm sure I won't be disappointed. So, for now, I'll give the lens 4 stars and Adorama 5 stars for such a great value. TTFN

Should have purchased this lens first!

Great all around lens if you don't mind lugging around a bit more weight. I use this mainly to shoot birds and other wildlife because of the fast focus and sharp pictures. Also for events. Use on E-5.

amazing lens

I had the 70-300mm lens and wasn't real happy with it. I tried this lens and was really impressed. I use it on my OMD EM-5 and have excellent results. It is a little heavy but I wouldn't want to give up the quality build for a lighter lens.

Best of the Best

I use it mostly for wildlife and outdoor sports. Have also used it for portraits...tight in head shots

The fastest of the best.

Use for studio portraits and outdoor events like marches, sports, etc. Olympic optics are the very best I have ever encountered and their SWD (Super Wave Drive) is just that "super" fast. The lens is heavy because its built like a rock.

Great Lens at a Great Price

Dollar-for-dollar, this lens is tough to beat in terms of focal length and quality. For a bit over $1,000 you get a fast, weather sealed lens with an effective focal length of 400mm. Works great with the EC-14 teleconverter to deliver 560mm with the loss of one stop. Pair this with 12-60 high grade lens and you are ready for just about anything.

Well worth the money

I had been using the 70-300mm telephoto but it doesn't always focus well in low light. This one is much smoother and very quiet. I have used it for wildlife and for taking casual shots at outdoor parties and the results are excellent

Great lens, I love it.

A fast lens is always heavier (the down side of all that extra glass), but the increase in weight was well worth it for not only the increase in speed, but the improved image clarity and color. The wave focus is fast and accurate. The lens ring for tripod use that is provided is necessary given the weight. Just got back from a shoot in the southern Utah canyons. Two thumbs up.

Excellent optics

I got it to shoot birds in flight and it is excellent for that. It has also become my standard lens for general purpose shots and macros of butterflies and insects.

Olympus 50-200 lens

You just have to get use to the heaviness of the lens. I had to get a camera sling when carrying the lens with any of my bodies. I usually shoot with two cameras when doing weddings. The lens is fast and accurate but with any auto focus be aware that subject has contrast although manual focussing is easy. I am glad to have bought this lens although I should have at the beginning of the year and not waited.

Great Lens

I wish it was a 72 mm lens but with a 67 to 72 adapter, it can use the same filters as my 12-60 Zuiko. Fast focus with excellent detail. Short length a plus. Have found nothing bad--only good on this lens. Lens hood is huge so I rarely use.

Big lens but best results

I tried this lens just a week ago and was surprised!! Took a photo from my patio at full extension hand held with IS on and was really knocked over when I expanded photo to 14x on the LED of my Olympus E-30 and image was tack sharp!! I still have to put it through it's paces but I'm sure the results will be great!!

Amazing lens- a must have!!!!

I've heard a lot of talk about the differences between this lens and similar Sigma offering, but after using both I can safely say that the Oly 50-200 is the clear winner. Focusing speed, IQ, lens weight and feel, all go in favor of the Oly lens. It is a bit heavy, but a monopod negates the weight nicely. Put this one with a 12-60 lens and a 1.4x teleconverter and you're set for nearly anything under the sun! Sports, wildlife, even some portraiture on occasion, it's just a great one to have in the bag.

Very fast and sharp lens

This is a very fast and sharp lens and very good in low light situations. I bought it to replace a 70-300mm Zuiko lens and I couldn't be happier with it's performance. Very rugged construction and silent autofocus make this lens a winner.

Mechanically OK, Optically Superb

This is a very sharp lens - even wide open. It is half the size, weight and price of a comparable Canon or Nikon lens. Optically superb. The problem: the zoom is accomplished by an external extension of the lens barrel, and the extension - a smaller diameter tube extending from the main body - is a bit flimsy. There is noticeable wiggle of the front element visible through the viewfinder, although no accompanying focus problems. It is not a problem yet other than it seems disturbing for a lens in this price range.

OLYMPUS STUCK PAYDIRT (OR GOLD)

Bought Olympus to get new lens mount system. Never considered Olympus beings I use Hasablad and Leica film, Canon 1D Full Frame Digital with adapters so I can use Hasi/Leica Glass on Canon. Only bought this so I could bolt up an old Minolta/Leica 800mm Mirror Lens via adapter. What a surprise in the quality of the output of both the E520 Camera and this Lens (only Olympus Lens that I own). With this addition I am back to being able to use all of my glass in digital, so Film is definately dead for me!!!

A lens I won't be with out

This is a really great lens, it is quick consistent and very solid. Some people complain about the weight of this lens I have no idea what they are talking about it is not heavy at all it is very easy to hand hold and carry all day. I do it all the time for events with out any problems. I have shot every thing from low light indoor Church settings, portraits, to out door wild life and scenery with very good success. The only complaint I have about this lens is the diameter of the lens hood, It makes it very hard to fit in a bag. However this is a lens that will be in my bag every time I leave the house.

Designed to meet the needs of the professional photographer, Zuiko Digital lenses were born of an uncompromising commitment to performance. The lenses feature high resolving power, to get the most out of the imaging element. Zuiko Digital lenses allow light to strike the image sensor at a near-perpendicular angle, minimizing degradation and light loss. This large, award-winning family of lenses is perfectly matched to work exclusively with digital cameras so every pixel is properly exposed.

This is a high-performance super-telescopic zoom lens that features, for the first time, the Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) autofocus system which enables the lens to achieve an AF speed about two times faster3 than the previous ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 model. ED lens elements are used extensively to correct the color blurring that can occur when telescopic lenses are extended to their maximum focal length, while the digital-dedicated design ensures high-quality performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. Close-up shooting capability is also superb, with a minimum shooting distance of just 1.2 meters throughout the zoom range.

Olympus 50-200mm Features

  • 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 zoom lens for digital cameras (equivalent to 100-200mm in 35mm photography)
  • Features Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) technology inside to provide quiet, ultra-fast autofocus speed
